Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 16 May 2010 17:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh it was pretty awesome and everything, but to me it was sort of a one time thing, and to others I think they think doors have opened up and that things can happen again in the future but I do not really want this.

(Rice Dream) (Stevie D), Sunday, 16 May 2010 18:21 (fourteen years ago) link

But I do now own a green handkerchief. What does this make me?

J0e and morbs do you remember that girl I was talking about that was weirdly tan and a gross ruffly top and put things in her weirdly prominent boobs?

weirdly tan = latina???

dude behind her is way more "weirdly tan"

The Reverend, Monday, 17 May 2010 03:02 (fourteen years ago) link

The flash in the pic is not v true to life but IRL she was like deliberately tan.

proof that my sweaty kentucky weekend actually happened: rocking out with my old highschool hardcore bros

that looks like so much fun!

queer punk land party was amazing. lots of great people, working on awesome farm-type projects, sex in the woods, views of mount shasta, great bands, intense amounts of drinking...and hey, se4n and i talked, and though we weren't ever not good friends, we're good friends on good terms again. lots of specific things said, but in the end, we did a long hug. so, feeling pretty good about stuff right now.

saw (and loved!) 'times square' tonight as part of the monthly queer/art/film series at the IFC center. the producers apparently excised a scene where nicky and pammy actually kiss

also the hosts showed trailers for films that they wanted to show but for which they couldn't locate a print, including this '70s schlock-sploitation curio (KJB have you seen this?):

Ha! I've known of that film ever since i was a little kid but never managed to see it. It stars Rula Lenska, though, so I should probably get on it.

Also, gays, is it unreasonable to assume that most everyone knows about the Stonewall riots? Coz I was having a conversation with two pretty intelligent (straight) people last night and neither of them knew what it was (one recalled it after I explained but didn't remember the name).

(Rice Dream) (Stevie D), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 14:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I know lots of gays who didn't know about them.

Also: happy birthday, surm!

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 14:23 (fourteen years ago) link

not too surprising, stevie. hell, most people in nyc didn't even know it was happening at the time and i'd bet lots of (esp. young) homos don't know about it at all.

joe scarborough and peoples (donna rouge), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Just showed a screener of the Stonewall doc to a gay who didn't know anything about them.

rim this, fuck that (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 15:43 (fourteen years ago) link

fwiw, I'd never heard of them until I started reading lots of stuff about gay rights

The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

for some reason, i find this whole 'not knowing about stonewall' thing incredibly crazy. it's like not knowing about the 'i have a dream' speech, imho.

The Portrait of a Lady of BJs (the table is the table), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:34 (fourteen years ago) link

they only teach one of those in school iirc

The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:36 (fourteen years ago) link

xp tabes I feel the same way until I realize that we are both A) gay and not only that but B) super-immersed in the history of it all; wd be so rich if I had $1 for every book I read/paper I wrote/class I took on queer theory or representations of gay men or whatever.

(Rice Dream) (Stevie D), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:40 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't know about this

jonathan blapelbon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

I learned about Stonewall on my own; not once was it mentioned in college courses.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I did too but only from my super-liberal unitarian friend who knew bout all that stuff and wd constantly be all YOU'RE GAY, HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW THESE THINGS??

joe scarborough and peoples (donna rouge), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

even the queer theory stuff I read is mostly about the intersections of race & sexuality, and for all sorts of unfortunate reasons this tends to be very seperated from white gay history

The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 17:05 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, I'VE known about Stonewall since I was a teen. But its somewhere below the Teapot Dome scandal in most US history classes, mo doubt.

rim this, fuck that (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 17:05 (fourteen years ago) link

No doubt.

rim this, fuck that (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 17:06 (fourteen years ago) link

lol two weeks ago i accidentally referred to stonewall as 'stonehenge' in a class presentation and no one said anything

Tape Store, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link

mo doubt, mo problems

The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 17:09 (fourteen years ago) link

where did the Teapot Dome riots take place?

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 17:10 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean, stuff was always mentioned peripherally in classes...in my public middle school, i remember it being mentioned by name but not really talked about.

and this ain't bragging, it's more just my own life story, but i think that some of my shock comes from the fact that i was so immersed in this history from the time i was young, being a 12-year-old punk kid who was lucky enough to grow up being friends with people like the guyz from Limpwrist, as well as literary types who gave me Ginsberg and Frank O'Hara books and whatnot. i don't judge people who don't know about this history, but i definitely find it a little sad and weird that it isn't more well-known. that said, i'm sure that 'Milk' did raise the profile of the early gay-rights movement for a lot of people, for better or for worse. (i only add that caveat b/c that film is just eh, and b/c of other issues that surrounded my own viewing of it that i've talked about before).

anyway, i need to finish writing this article on Azari & III:
