Has anyone else tried searching for people of the same first and last name and adding them? Such a simple concept and, if you have a distinct enough name, a rewarding experience. I just tried it today and it's like meeting your long-lost brother. (Ooh, and I'm not legally responsible for Tom Ripley experiences that come out of this.)

Cunga, Thursday, 10 July 2008 06:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Someone did that to me a few weeks ago - a Texan college student and libertarian. He's not been added yet.

(I currently have 3 other pending friend requests that I'm ignoring, 2 friend suggestion requests, and 136 other requests)

Forest Pines Mk2, Thursday, 10 July 2008 07:51 (sixteen years ago) link

"same first and last name"--like David David or Johnson Johnson or whoever?

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 10 July 2008 07:51 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost: "someone with the same full name as you"

Forest Pines Mk2, Thursday, 10 July 2008 07:52 (sixteen years ago) link

I have 2 friend requests and 388 other requests still pending. Plz to get the message, ppl.

Just got offed, Thursday, 10 July 2008 07:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Why not block the apps that do the requesting?

Everyone with the same name as me = American people who still think they're Irish in some way. Fuck them.

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 10 July 2008 08:29 (sixteen years ago) link

That would involve putting some effort into it, which is more than Facebook is worth.

(I have two apps on my profile, last.fm and Flickr. The main reason I go there is to update the Flickr app)

Forest Pines Mk2, Thursday, 10 July 2008 08:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow I either have no friends or no lame friends who invite me to a million applications. I have no requests pending.

I did get a o_0 message from an acquaintance I barely know who added me as a friend a while back on the instant messaging thing last night saying "you're always on fucking facebook what the fuck is wrong with you". This was o_0 for a few reasons mostly because how would they know if I always on Facebook unless they were also always on Facebook checking if I was on there, and also because I'm not always on Facebook! But I do tend to leave a tab open in Firefox with it in - I guess that must make it say I'm online 24 hours a day?

No one has done this to me yet ;_;

April 3
Chris doesn't really rate Singleton very much at all. In fact, he thinks that Singleton is the worst place in the entire fucking universe. It sucks balls.4:53pm

It probably isn't but I hope this is the Singleton in Swansea, which I drove through yesterday. It probably did suck balls although it was hard to know for sure

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 10 July 2008 09:20 (sixteen years ago) link

there's a singleton near blackpool, too. but it wasn't that bad. i'd be slightly disappointed if it was that singleton.

Has anyone else tried searching for people of the same first and last name and adding them?

someone did this to me, aye. i added him. it was unrewarding. it does, however, mean i occasionally get updates that seem to be suggesting i've added the cocksmearing application or have joined the jim davidson fan club, which is disconcerting for half a second or so.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 10 July 2008 09:50 (sixteen years ago) link

My bf got more than one random person with his surname going "hay add me we have same last name lol maybe u r my cuz" kind of shit. I've never had that but my surname is reasonably common. Also, I pay FB abt 0.00001% attention.

Trayce, Thursday, 10 July 2008 09:53 (sixteen years ago) link

there's an entire facebook group for people who have my first name/last name combination. only 90 of the 500+ people with that name are in that group, though.

salsa shark, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Salsa, do you guys actually talk? Do you have anything in common?

Mark C, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I have a strict "eat, drink, or sleep" policy for adding Facebook friends: if we've done at least one of those three together, I'll add you, otherwise, please go bother your cousin's uncle's boss or some shit.

This also makes my celebrity friends way more impressive than yours.

Three Word Username, Thursday, 10 July 2008 13:31 (sixteen years ago) link

b-b-but christopher biggins is my friend too

DG, Thursday, 10 July 2008 13:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I like posting Frank and Walters videos on FB. My profile is getting too twee.

jel --, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Currently not enjoying getting updates about what my ex is up to. Her recent status update was '*** ****** is happy', which sent all kinds of cogs spinning in my mind. I should probably defriend her, but I want to be actual friends with her when the bitterness has died down.

chap, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, status updates, I spend too much time thinking what my current status should be. There are so many options!

jel --, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I kind of liked it better when it had to start with 'is' - sometimes restrictions aid creativity.

chap, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:51 (sixteen years ago) link

the day I realised I could remove the is, was a beautiful day!

jel --, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:52 (sixteen years ago) link

there are a couple on my list who still haven't realised they can remove the 'is'.

salsa shark, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:25 (sixteen years ago) link

This also makes my celebrity friends way more impressive than yours.

I make it "eat or be eaten by him/her" as a policy which makes my list triply more impressive.

I mean, shit, dude, impress(ed) and Facebook friend list do not belong together in one sentence.

stevienixed, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Especially so given that there are no celebrities on my friend list.

Three Word Username, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:46 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't like people from elementary/middle/high school who try to add me to their friends lists when we were either a) never friends or b) never even LIKED one another.

especially when their applications include "bible verses" and not one but TWO "daily babes". and especially when their status update is "D*** ******
jus hit the gym.....200lbs dammmmn hit 225 then cut down for mexico....."

and especially especially when they end up with a kid and call it Kingston.

sometimes I think I should keep them on my list for the humour value, but right now I'm just thinking it's time for a purge.

Did this once because I know someone in my town has the same name as me and I wanted to see what she looked like.

Also sent a Friend add to a friend but after taking a second look at her prof pic realized it wasn't her. I had also added a message. Oops. Whatevs... she'll survive.

stevienixed, Saturday, 19 July 2008 12:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I always thought this was going to be a thread about someone who had been asked by a friend, but not a boyfriend*, if they could add them as their girlfriend on Facebook as a way of making them look more interesting. We would then have to discuss this social minefield.

*not my heterosexuality assumption.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 21 July 2008 09:26 (sixteen years ago) link

er. that should be "note".

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't like people from elementary/middle/high school who try to add me to their friends lists when we were either a) never friends or b) never even LIKED one another.

I always don't know whether I should accept requests from people who I *was* friends with but that I haven't seen/communicated with in fifteen-plus years. it usually just ends up with both parties going "omg i haven't seen you in AGES, whatchu up to now?" on the wall-to-wall and then never speaking to each other again.

Sounds like someone got dumped!

akm, Sunday, 27 July 2008 14:10 (sixteen years ago) link

think so.

it just seems kind of unnecessary. especially hate the combo wall-feed.

There's a button at the top that says "Try the NEW Facebook" or something to that effect that should let you reload with the new design. I think going to "new.facebook.com" should pull it up too.

Sure, I don't really see where or how it's necessary per se. The wall-feed is cool imo because it brings everything together, makes your entire page a big "this is the most recent shit I've done on FB" status updater. I'm with you in thinking it could stand for a better look, but I love the idea of it.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 27 July 2008 14:29 (sixteen years ago) link

redesigns ok, still miles better than myspace

max, Sunday, 27 July 2008 14:33 (sixteen years ago) link

I think I'm mostly against not so much the functions but the design. it just looks really messy to me. the earlier version of the new layout that was posted upthread looked much better: http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44668000/jpg/_44668913_facebooknew1_416x300.jpg

lol leon wieseltier in the new republic - I will not rise to defend my generation, because we have made a muck of many things, and because we do linger long over ourselves, and because the analysis of life in generational terms is idiotic. Every generation holds every variety of individual. But I will not be given lessons in self-abnegation from Facebookers. The history of vanity has never seen anything quite like them. And I must morbidly warn them that connectivity will not protect them from the way of all flesh. When they come to bury a father or a friend, when their beauty begins to wither and their vigor to wane, when they awake one morning to the fear that they may have more to look back on than to look forward to--when the inevitabilities poke them, may their eight hundred "friends" stand them in good stead. I promise not to call their shudders whines. For if spring comes, can winter be far behind?

Removed a friend for the first time ever.

1. Barely know the guy
2. Shamess Howard supporter
3. Every time he wants to sell something or publicise himself, he updates his status EVERY HALF HOUR just so he's always in everyone's top three
