Trying to think of a good one since Superman II. Does the Japanese Tetsuo count? (I skipped all the X-Men)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago) link

oh duh, Ghost World.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago) link

you guys are both just trying to fuck with everyone, right?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:40 (seventeen years ago) link

omg ghost world

s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:41 (seventeen years ago) link

ooh Tetsuo is fabulous (I've never seen the comic book)

American Splendor?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I do think by-and-large the superhero films all suffer from the crudest of "let's cash-in on this trend" sensibilities. As a child I longed to see comic books translated to the big screen and couldn't understand why it was so rarely done, but now that the market is flooded with the material its just kinda... gross: Elektra, Catwoman, Daredevil, Hellboy, the Hulk, those last couple pre-Nolan Batman movies, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Fantastic Four, V for Vendetta, X-Men 3, Ghost Rider...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

you're blowing my mind here dude.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THREADS

ghost rider, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:52 (seventeen years ago) link

okay well then just explain to me how they deal with the Venom-origin thing, cuz I'm assuming there's no Secret Wars/Beyonder sequence

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I should go to Mike White's Year of the Dog this weekend to support Hollywood films for grownups.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Does battle royale count?

Will M., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:06 (seventeen years ago) link

sometimes people up in morningside heights want pizza too, you asshole.

THE PIZZA PLACE IS IN THE WEST VILLAGE AND CLEARLY THE 40 BLOCKS WERE NOT IN MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:09 (seventeen years ago) link

they do the full secret wars thing.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

for crying out loud jon, you're questioning the scope of his pizza delivery service but accepting the fact that he's spiderman??? c'mon.

shakey, i'm not going to defend the majority of those movies, but out of "interest," how many of them have you actually seen?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Hellboy and Blade I-II were awesome.

milo z, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago) link

JW, yr being ridiculously prosaic, it's clearly not the real "New York" as there was a big Chicago El train running fucking through it in "2." (You know, with the lamentable Jesus shot)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:16 (seventeen years ago) link

morbius the fact that you've seen BOTH of these movies really undermines your whole "spiderman sucks" argument, why are you wasting your time on something you'll know you hate? you can't possibly want to bone james franco that badly.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:17 (seventeen years ago) link

tho yeah, JON WHY DON'T YOU GO SUCK ON THE EL TRAIN THING

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:18 (seventeen years ago) link

it doesn't, Ally. The first one I was game for, I had nothing to go on other than the daily newspaper strip. Then the second one had some decent critics writing "oh rilly rilly this is SO much better," and still I waited to RENT it to find they were clowns. Now that the non-mustache critics are saying suck on this one, I may not even take the DVD outta the liberry.

Plus I know you and Tom have already ordered tix for Indiana Jones and the Prostate of Doom.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:24 (seventeen years ago) link

what the hell does that even mean, dude? you seem the far more likely candidate to be preordering spielberg tix!

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:26 (seventeen years ago) link

hello JOEK

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

wtf, guys NOT EVEN IN COMIC BOOKS WILL A PIZZA PLACE DELIVER 40 BLOCKS UPTOWN

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

OK YOU WIN FATTEY, YOU WOULD KNOW ALL ABOUT PIZZA DELIVERY

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:29 (seventeen years ago) link

IN THE MOVIES COLUMBIA IS IN THE WEST VILLAKE MMMMKAY

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:31 (seventeen years ago) link

THERE ARE NO NEWSPAPER OFFICES IN THE FLATIRON BUILDING JESUS PEOPLE

ghost rider, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

They should make a She-Hulk movie.

jel --, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:35 (seventeen years ago) link

GUYS THE THING IS THAT IF YOU GET BIT BY A SPIDER YOU DO NOT ACTUALLY TURN INTO SPIDERMAN WTF

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:36 (seventeen years ago) link

My main quibble with Spidey 3, is the ribbing on his black symbiotic suit.

jel --, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:36 (seventeen years ago) link

GOD, THE RIBBING

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:45 (seventeen years ago) link

responding to Ally upthread I have seen:
Catwoman (TV - didn't watch the whole thing)
Daredevil (airplane)
Hellboy (TV - again didn't make it through the whole thing)
the Hulk (airplane)
those last couple pre-Nolan Batman movies (saw these cuz a bandmate worked on them and got free copies)
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (rental)
Fantastic Four (airplane)
V for Vendetta (saw it in the theater)
X-Men 3 (rental)

so of those I listed I didn't see Elektra or Ghost Rider

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

you have GOT TO BE FUCKING KIDDING about the Secret Wars thing! Come on spoil it for me and tell me the truth

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:50 (seventeen years ago) link

my main quibble with spidey 3 is that, first of all, the pizza delivery thing would never happen

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

there was a big Chicago El train running fucking through it in "2." (You know, with the lamentable Jesus shot)

yeah, you could hear every dude in the theatre say "hey, that's clark and lake" when that sequence starts.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

shakey mo if you haven't seen elektra and ghost rider then you are basically just wasting everyone's time. this are serious thread, ok?

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I hear ghost rider had a deeply realistic pizza delivery sequence

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:06 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, with sam elliott.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:07 (seventeen years ago) link

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (rental)

You rented this movie.

nickalicious, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:12 (seventeen years ago) link

lol i know right that movie was terrible

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:13 (seventeen years ago) link

i watched a tidbit of league of extraordinary gentleman on the plane and i turned it off because i preferred to watch the map instead

homosexual II, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:26 (seventeen years ago) link

you should have won a valuable prize for that decision

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I rented it cuz the comics are fantastic and there was a lot of potential but of course it was all fucked up

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:53 (seventeen years ago) link

the sandman's shirt looks like some h&m shit

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:59 (seventeen years ago) link

lolz Nathan Lee in the Voice:

"...it sheds some light on the whole skinny black jeans phenomenon. Rest easy Hedi Slimane and residents of the 11211, the origin of overpriced mantyhose may now be attributed to the nefarious agenda of intergalactic goo...A peevish obsidian liquid leaks out on impact, oozing its way toward Parker's moped, soon to transform the mild-mannered Forest Hills dork into a monochromatic hipster sporting asymmetrical bangs, black eyeliner, and calf-hugging trousers. Our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has become . . . MisShaped!

"Dunst now rivals Scarlett Johansson as the most useless ingenue in Hollywood. Maguire's perky persona is wearing as thin as his lips."

And there's nothing else to say:

as far as I'm concerned, films derived from works whose protagonists speak in dialogue balloons are one of the cancers destroying the industry. Not that it isn't easy to understand ... the first two Spidey epics grossed a total of as far as I'm concerned, films derived from works whose protagonists speak in dialogue balloons are one of the cancers destroying the industry. Not that it isn't easy to understand ... the first two Spidey epics grossed a total of $1.6 billion worldwide, and there's no corporate entity on Earth that would turn down that kind of money.

But let's be honest. This is a sub-literary genre lacking in subtlety and psychological depth. Not only isn't it Shakespeare, it's not even Stephen King. I mean, just because Peter Parker has family and girlfriend issues doesn't make him a well-rounded character. He is, in essence, a nice kid who might as well be the star of any one of a thousand teen novels, the kind your ninth-grade teacher encouraged you to read, hoping you'd move onto bigger and better things.....6 billion worldwide, and there's no corporate entity on Earth that would turn down that kind of money.

what a fucking chump!

Lewis Beale, that is

TOMBOT, Friday, 4 May 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

ah, I pine for films of Five Easy Piece's comic-book-realism "artistry."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 May 2007 16:28 (seventeen years ago) link

This was disappointing. Though not because it is some sort of 'sub-literary genre' that is destroying art or whatever. that kind of argument is stupid, and surely we've all grown past that.

Gukbe, Friday, 4 May 2007 16:40 (seventeen years ago) link

no.
