You tip 20% (subtotal + tax) - minus the delivery charge. The delivery charge comes out of your tip.
― Mister Jim, Monday, 14 June 2010 06:25 (fourteen years ago) link
delivery charge != tip!!! the delivery charge goes to the restaurant, not the driver.

When I delivered pizza, they charged the customers a $2.50 delivery charge per order. I got $1 per every order I delivered to compensate for gas, and I got minimum wage, and that was all. And actually, people tipped me really poorly more often than not.

Tipping on the delivery charge there would have been an extra $.50, not to much to palliate a nervous conscience. I just hand the pizza guy a $5 every time, and watch their eyebrows go up.

I always think delivery tip should depend on how much of a hassle it is for them to get to your house
― iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 15:09 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah, for me working out appropriate tips for delivery vary anywhere from 15-40% depending on order size, distance, weather, time of day, speed, etc.

i delivered for jimmy john's in college. so many people assumed that the delivery charge went 100% to the driver (all i got was 5% of the total $ of food I delivered to cover fuel cost), that ANY tip was appreciated by me. if you're having angst over exactly what to base your tip on, you're already an A+ customer imo.

"On Sunday, people in sections of Charleston, SC, were up to their knees in flood water. But that didn't deter this driver for Domino's Pizza from making his deliveries.
According to the driver, when confronted with an 18-inch deep river of water between him and his destination, he ditched his shoes and to deliver the order of two medium pies and a 2 liter of soda."
They tipped him $4, what assholes.
I've already started tipping $2/first drink, $1/each additional drink but I'm trying to start tipping $2/each drink. But it's v difficult when you're making a very small amount of money.
― Chanté Ackerman (Stevie D), Friday, 20 August 2010 05:38 (fourteen years ago) link
Jesus, I wouldn't be ordering pizzas during a serious flooding situation, but if I did, I would feel obligated to tip at least the price of the pie.

It's great with pizza guys in Ireland... they don't expect tips, so if they get them they are pathetically grateful.

How much to Irish delivery guys get paid?
― Chanté Ackerman (Stevie D), Friday, 20 August 2010 16:06 (fourteen years ago) link
The same as Irish obstetricians, because delivering is delivering, amirite?

somebody was arguing with me about those delivery car services, you know like the black or gray cars in new york with nothing on them, saying the tip is included in the price. it's this far-reaching rumor in new york. i maintain that it is not included. you tip, just like any other service. people get heated about this.

got a cab from the airport. internet said avg cost should be $22. called a cab co. and they said it'd be $30. whatever, didn't have time/not in the mood to shop around. had $35 on us, so figured we're good w/$5 tip. driver is pleasant enough during drive. drops us off, says it's $35. my sister hands him $35 saying that's all she's got. dude looks at money, incredulous at what he's seeing. "no tip??? where's the tip? no fucking tip???", becoming irate, etc. what a fucking asshole.
― hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 20 August 2010 17:37 (fourteen years ago) link
To be fair, I doubt anybody had informed the cab driver that the ride was quoted at $30
― Chanté Ackerman (Stevie D), Friday, 20 August 2010 17:43 (fourteen years ago) link
Even so, it's a TIP. It's not your goddamn birthright.
― hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 20 August 2010 18:00 (fourteen years ago) link
and we explained that we were quoted $30, only had $35 on us, and dude was still being a raging peepee head.
― hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 20 August 2010 18:02 (fourteen years ago) link
I understand his fury, but (1) he should take that out on the person who quoted you the $30, and (2) you couldn't stop and get an extra ten - twenty bucks, in case traffic or whatnot?

30 is like the standard airport fare around here. and that guy was a raging douche and i would have told him right off.
― janice (surm), Friday, 20 August 2010 18:18 (fourteen years ago) link
now when i get in a car like that, i tell the driver exactly what i was quoted on the phone. no surprises.
My sister's place is literally 10 minutes from the airport. There's no traffic at 9pm on a Saturday. I'm not gonna be some no nuts "ooh sorry sir please don't be mad at me, is $50 enough to drive me a few miles? Here's my bank account # if not."

I don't know if it was earlier this thread or one of the other tipping threads, but I delivered food and for a $9.75 order I'd have some people demand I go back to my car to grab a quarter to give them change for a $10 (which I would calmly and politely do). So I really have no sympathy for guys who get apoplectic over it.

With Dominos in the UK you can order your Pizza online and pay online, so you don't have to hand over any money when the driver delivers it. Saves any worry about whether you are meant to tip him or not.
― I am using your worlds, Friday, 20 August 2010 18:36 (fourteen years ago) link
But do you include a tip when paying online?
― hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 20 August 2010 18:39 (fourteen years ago) link
Well you pay for the whole service! So in a way, yes.
― Chewshabadoo, Friday, 20 August 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link
some delivery sites in the States work that way too, where you input your tip online. I wanna say Quiznos does, and I believe one of the pizza delivery giants does. I don't like it so much because I'm guaranteeing a tip when the service may suck, but then again, the word "tip" does stand for "to insure promptness" so technically it's in the spirit of it, lol.

― quincie, Friday, 20 August 2010 18:42 (fourteen years ago) link
I suppose, but if I do that in the US there's an option to enter a tip amount. Not that I'd order from Dominos obv, don't wanna give out that impression.xp
― hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 20 August 2010 18:42 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah they should authorize your card, but not charge it til the driver returns. so then you can quickly go in and deduct .37 from his/her tip for not telling you to have a nice night.
― hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 20 August 2010 18:45 (fourteen years ago) link
think we can agree on the following:
1. people who tip badly for no reason other than being cheap pieces of crap are disgusting savages and it's understandable why the recipient is upset2. sometimes unexpected shiz happens that makes normally good-tipping individuals not be able to tip properly3. regardless of why you didn't get any tip or a good tip, acting like a gorilla on cocaine over it is not professional and never acceptable, even if one can be sympathetic to their frustration.
― michangelo wuz a party d00d (San Te), Friday, 20 August 2010 18:46 (fourteen years ago) link
I can agree on that. I did feel bad about not tipping RIGHT UNTIL gorilla on cocaine showed itself. It's a bit frightening when someone acts that way and they know where your live-alone sister lives.

Haha I always tip dominos guys when I pay online!
Are you meant to tip people who deliver fridges? It felt kind of awkward not to: like, I have already paid for the fridge! Delivery was included in the price! On other hand you have just carried a heavy object up my stairs? So clearly I should tip? What should I tip? £20? I don't want to tip £20? Anyway while I was thinking all this they went away again.
