Tony Ward was just about the only redeeming value of BUTT's awful "Straight Issue"

Went to PrideFest yesterday (invited by a straight friend!) — It was fun but also slightly boring. I felt like there was a vibe of negativity in the air that would be difficult to articulate.

As for good news, I've gone on two dates with a cute boy and I think I really like him. :D

Yeah, the vibe of negativity at those parades definitely hangs in the air anytime a greased-up, pot-bellied bear wearing saggy whities dips it low to the pavement. Of course, in that case maybe some of them are thinking of the children.

So for the first time in my ENTIRE FUCKING LIFE I "hooked up" with a guy at a bar; it was my friend Tony's DJ night at this trendy spot in Philly. This dude gave me his number, and all my friends are giving me the advice of play it cool and don't text him all eager right this second but wait til tomorrow evening and be all "oh hey are you going to this Lighting Bolt show you said you might go to", etc, like all demure. He is unbelievably adorable; I don't want to blow this but I am already way overthinking it.

i guess this wasn't intentional, but the framing of that sentence in a paragraph about how scissor sisters are becoming more gay makes it seem as if anonymous, sometimes internet-facilitated sex is somehow taboo in the gay community, or MORE taboo than it is in the straight community, or that it's a "problem" that doesn't exist in the straight community at all

i haven't listened to the song and i assume that matthew is just relaying the feelings of jake shears, but the framing and solemn tone of that sentence remind me exactly of how straight people view and understand internet-facilitated sex ime

for me it's a mix of ignorance and "oh my god, be careful" in a really overly serious tone -- not that that's not an important sentiment but straight people always seem to treat that kind of sex/human interaction as some grave act, as opposed to the more flippant action that it usually is

Actually I remember seeing ads/signs to such effect in gay papers and locales back in the '80s & 90s, usu after someone in Greater NY was dismembered by a pickup.

yeah i've read things advocating that exact thing (in dan savage columns i think) but i've never done it myself
