jay's line was the best definitely. KS's was okay, but too samey at times. wendy's was okay... the boobful one ... "WTF?" jay sorta meanly summed wendy's up for me... the target audience there is just a different age range or something. and no unified jamz.

i was happy to see KS swallow a nugget. miss self-righteous needed taken down a notch. i think the producers did a fine job of making wendy less of a bad guy for this episode, which is nice. she's still paranoid as hell tho! sheesh!

everybody on this thead, stay back from me! you've all got motives!

i got a spacebar and i know how to use it!

wendy... i almost exploded when she started picking the fight(s) with KS and Jay... spouting absurd and paranoid things, accusing everyone of strategizing with every sentence they speak, but worst of all, that smirk on her face. there's nothing worse than someone being so wrong yet so determined in an irrational argument like that, except of course, to behave that way with that dumb smirk. she keeps saying she's the long shot, she's a mom, and where she could have been the underdog/victim, she decided instead to be this villain. how can someone with a child behave this way? and could her eyes be any closer together?

That was classic when WP said her daughter had made the drawing "for the judges" and her daughter corrected her. I bet Wendy was the smarmiest kiss-ass in school.

I loved Jay's line. It looked like the direction fashion is going. And I was glad they acknowledged his innate creativity and gave that precedence over KS's polish and professionalism.

To be honest, I liked Wendy's clothes better than Kara's. Then again, I'm middle-aged. And I've never been such a fan of leather and fur.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I liked Kara's but in retrospect I see the Gucci all over it.. There's lots of stuff in Jay's collection that I would wear. With him it's the color and texture and all the artsy-craftsy touches (knitting, quilting) that really interest me, but I am less fond of the cut of some of those outfits - the big boots and ruffly skirts and baggy sweaters are too familiar to me from the art school cool kids around where I live.

Wendy came off better than I'd expected, actually. I thought KS's refusing to speak to her was incredibly childish and was glad Wendy called bullshit on it. Anyhow, Wendy struck me as very DC careerist conservative, in demeanor & in taste, so she made more sense to me after this episode.

I have never watched this, because i don't have cable. I just want to say hi to Maria D. Hi!

"the big boots and ruffly skirts and baggy sweaters are too familiar to me from the art school cool kids around where I live."

no joke! that was something that sorta stuck out that the judges missed... "oh he's just sitting in pennsylvania doing his own little thing!" well, not really. cross fort thunder yarnism with japanese anime/cosplay fashions... aherm.

another note: dude, i really hated the music wendy chose for her models to walk to. omg badness. i know that shouldn't matter, but it was painful.

Hi Alison! We were out with Scott's parents when you called. Square rigger no less. I'll have to find out what I missed on Lost over on that thread. Do they rerun Lost later in the week?

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

what i love most about jay's work - the quilting. a lot of the patterns are culled from traditional PA dutch handiwork. i almost think thats what makes jay a better designer over kara, his ability to put these small referential touches in his work. kara, being an army brat [and a brat, period] doesnt know what its like to grow up in one place. except of course, LA. and that vapid glamour is directly reflected in her work.

and wendy, ew. she comes from creepy old southern money. did you see her face when she called jay a "whippin' boy"? im sure she would have preferred "slave" or something far worse.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm sure she hangs out at the mansion all the time, feeling deprived of her birthright. Her studio seemed alright, though. I had to cringe a bit when Wendy's mom was trying to act like one of the cool kids smoking with Jay.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Even *I* would totally wear that blue yarn-ey jacket Jay did with the big upswept collar.

KS disappointed me with the shoe incident and the clothes were ultimately too thirties/too deco, though I absolutely understand the kind of rage she had where she could barely speak to WP or even sleep in the same room as her.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:29 (nineteen years ago) link

that shoe situation was a perfect example of why i dont like kara -- she feels she's entitled to favors and ultimately, feels entitled to win because she has worked in the industry for so long.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:33 (nineteen years ago) link

wendy's outfits belonged at a renfaire. also, check out how she was using her daughter as a prop to make it look like she really has a heart.

"EVERYBODY HATES YOU WENDY. EVERYBODY." (PUNXSUTAWNEY PENIS), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

So what exactly did Jay do in the pr0n industry?

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

kara, being an army brat [and a brat, period] doesnt know what its like to grow up in one place. except of course, LA. and that vapid glamour is directly reflected in her work.

So those who grew up in L.A. are only capable of "vapid glamour?" Please.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:04 (nineteen years ago) link

he probably worked for A-1, this company downtown [located above jones restaurant, fyi]. every designer winds up working for them at some point, builing spanking.com or something.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:04 (nineteen years ago) link

oh spence, you know i didnt mean it that way. she's vapid because she's historyless and relies on LA's glamour to define her.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah, good point then!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:22 (nineteen years ago) link

"check out how she was using her daughter as a prop to make it look like she really has a heart."

i didn't think that was WP, but more the producers trying to lighten the hate mail a little. i don't like wendy's work and she definitely can't defend her craziness, but look at her from the point of view that she's near 40ish, she's desperate for some kind of break, and this show was maybe her last chance to try to get to her dream job. at least she believes that. in that context, her behavior ain't shit. i still say, on a savagery ten scale graded for The Apprentice, she's a mean 3.

let's face it, there are a lot of wendy peppers out there who won't even get the shot she got. who among them would gladly fight and do even worse to get the same chance she got? plenty i bet. i don't have my dream job. what would i do? i can't say really. ask me in ten years when i'm shopping for knife sharpeners. heh.

so I finally saw the end of this yesterday, jay obviously deserved to win. they were also advertising a reunion bitchfest episode but it doesn't actually seem to be on Bravo's schedule; is it airing just before the second season starts next week? someone storms off.

D0wn10ad!ng season 1, finally got to the finale. Anyone know what the microhouse music that Jay used in his runway show? Something off of Kompakt, I'm guessing?

man there are a million threads on this show

Anyone watching this first post-Klum & Gunn season? I was skeptical at first but it's been pretty good (with a note that my watching over the past few years was kind of spotty), Christian Siriano is a way more empathetic and involved consultant. I thought he did a good job in this week's setting up CFDA mentorship for the winner; I seem to remember him being the one that said publicly it was kind of insane after he won PR, he had no idea how to run a business and it was overwhelming. I also like Kloss against my better judgement (knowing she's with a Kushner). AS for the calls on the contestants: it seems obvious to me that Bishme is the best of the remaining designers (Garo is good but that corset thing gets tired...I know that's his whole gig but it would be good to see something without it) and the less said about millenial sunshine the better.

akm, Friday, 31 May 2019 16:48 (five years ago) link

I am on episode 5? The episodes seem really long and I don't love the new workspace (it makes everything seem muted) but i agree with most of your comments re Siriano and Kloss (also omg she is so tall). I kind of laugh at the stylist. Like, I like her attitude but whenever they show her instagram posts of her squatty fashion I laugh.

Yerac, Friday, 31 May 2019 16:52 (five years ago) link

Siriano is crazy talented. I am so happy that his business is doing well.

Yerac, Friday, 31 May 2019 16:52 (five years ago) link

I have no clue who that male judge is but he sucks.

Yerac, Friday, 31 May 2019 16:53 (five years ago) link

He bugged me for a while too but I came around on him by the end of the season. He's no zak posen obviously.

akm, Friday, 31 May 2019 17:00 (five years ago) link

How dare you forget Michael Kors!

Yerac, Friday, 31 May 2019 17:02 (five years ago) link

Kors was annoying.

akm, Friday, 31 May 2019 17:30 (five years ago) link

the lifetime-era heidi/tim/posen seasons were really enjoyable... i tried watching the new season and after two episodes i just thought it had lost almost all of the magic. but maybe i wasn't being generous enough

J0rdan S., Friday, 31 May 2019 17:43 (five years ago) link

you guys are right about christian tho, he was clearly the bright spot

J0rdan S., Friday, 31 May 2019 17:44 (five years ago) link

My main problem with the lifetime era was the odd suburbaness of it. Like being sponsored by JC Penny and Red Robin.

Yerac, Friday, 31 May 2019 17:50 (five years ago) link

I think I appreciated Kors' bone deep bitchiness that comes with age.

Yerac, Friday, 31 May 2019 17:51 (five years ago) link

Siriano is the most successful of any PR winner, AFAIK; in fact, he may be the only successful one? What has happened to the others?

akm, Friday, 31 May 2019 18:40 (five years ago) link

I love the new season - turns out the majority of the Lifetime guard leaving has been the best thing the show has done in years. Christian Siriano is, as noted, the best thing about the show so far. He's less paternal than Tim Gunn, but more helpful. Karlie Kloss is whatever as a host. I actually like Brandon Maxwell, he's clearly Kors-lite but he's still critical when it counts.

Out of the final four, I'm rooting for Sebastian. Bishme for my runner-up. I can't stand Garo and his fucking corsets and Hester is v hit-or-miss.

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 31 May 2019 18:48 (five years ago) link

xpost I watched the super All Star season with international winners from past seasons. I think there have been some successful people just not on the level as Siriano actually doing high fashion.

Yerac, Friday, 31 May 2019 19:00 (five years ago) link

yeah I just dug up an article on all the winners, most are still working in fashion in some way but none at his level. I forgot about some of those earlier winners, like that asshole neck tattoo dude.

akm, Friday, 31 May 2019 20:00 (five years ago) link

I was trying to find this lengthy older article about Siriano's business problems post PR but everything hitting is from this year's PR debut. It was really good though that he embraced designing for non-model types in a way that felt sincere and not just cashing in in the moment. Like it was obscene that no one wanted to design a dress for Leslie Jones.

The right designer won! What a great season, really.

Also, the next season is airing this fall? Really? Did they shoot these these new Bravo seasons back to back?

I am assuming Hester Cosplay did not win? I think I am still around 8 designers left.

anyone tune into Making the Cut? It's quite good. As much as I like Christian Siriano he's the only thing about PR that is still good.

Making the Cut is essentially exactly the same show, with the difference that all the designers are a lot further along in their careers and the prize money is way higher so the expectation is that whoever wins this really will launch into a much bigger brand. So far there have also been fewer design fails. The only thing I dont like about Making the Cut is that the judge panel has Naomi Campbell on it and she's so incredibly unpleasant.

akm, Monday, 6 April 2020 14:42 (four years ago) link

I am LOVING this show. The clothes are amazing. Sander and Esther are my favourites and I really don't see what they see in Johnny.

Naomi is great TV. I can see how her directness can come across as rude but I actually think it's very honest and the praise she gives is always really precise and useful and celebratory. I'm sure Simon Cowell has said nastier things on his shows and got away with it.

Chiara Ferragni seems the weak link to me - she doesn't seem to have anything useful to contribute. It is hilarious how blatant they've made it that Nicole Richie couldn't get a visa for Japan though.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 18 April 2020 07:14 (four years ago) link

Also the budget for this must be unreal. Not just the main prize but the weekly ones too. And it looks gorgeous on screen too. When Esther went for a swim I wanted to jump in that water, it was so beautifully shot.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 18 April 2020 07:16 (four years ago) link

oh is that what happened to richie? I actually forgot she was even on it. you'd think they would have researched that more before hand.

the one bad thing about this show: the music is unbearable. too loud, generic, awful. go back to some bland vocal-free stuff please.

akm, Saturday, 18 April 2020 15:21 (four years ago) link

you guys are talking about Making the Cut? I only saw some headline about it dissing on Amazon so I kind of overlooked it, but it's good?

Yerac, Saturday, 18 April 2020 15:28 (four years ago) link

Yes. If you liked PR with Heidi and Tim you'll like it, it's essentially the same show with a bigger budget and more accomplished designers.
