long joke, but A+ punchline

The Reverend, Thursday, 1 July 2010 22:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Bits of that review are so awful it makes me wanna take off my shirt.

I suppose "gay discos" are more outrageous to a white straight man than Ghostface records.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 July 2010 23:27 (thirteen years ago) link

what's outrageous to me is that ppl like the Scissor Sisters

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Friday, 2 July 2010 01:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Elmo, actually I don't know him very well at all. I think it goes back to Livejournal days, when we hung out in the same movie groups. I'm sure if I were the type to pare down FB friends, he'd probably be on the chopping block pretty early.

rim this, fuck that (Eric H.), Friday, 2 July 2010 04:59 (thirteen years ago) link

that scissor sisters review. what. how many ignorant clichés and assumptions about gay culture can you cram into one review.

wtf would m-perp know about gay culture anyway

jed_, Friday, 2 July 2010 08:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i originally typed that and deleted it on the grounds of meanness lol

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 08:32 (thirteen years ago) link

yes, i was just about to write - "not that there's anything wrong with that!"

jed_, Friday, 2 July 2010 08:34 (thirteen years ago) link

"Sex and Violence" explores the self-destructive impulse to indulge in anonymous, sometimes Internet-facilitated sex.

what exactly is "self-destructive" about this?

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 08:43 (thirteen years ago) link

could easily substitute "self awakening" or or anything in between.

jed_, Friday, 2 July 2010 08:47 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess this wasn't intentional, but the framing of that sentence in a paragraph about how scissor sisters are becoming more gay makes it seem as if anonymous, sometimes internet-facilitated sex is somehow taboo in the gay community, or MORE taboo than it is in the straight community, or that it's a "problem" that doesn't exist in the straight community at all

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 08:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i haven't listened to the song and i assume that matthew is just relaying the feelings of jake shears, but the framing and solemn tone of that sentence remind me exactly of how straight people view and understand internet-facilitated sex ime

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 08:52 (thirteen years ago) link

how straight people view and understand internet-facilitated sex

barely-concealed jealousy ime

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 08:54 (thirteen years ago) link

for me it's a mix of ignorance and "oh my god, be careful" in a really overly serious tone -- not that that's not an important sentiment but straight people always seem to treat that kind of sex/human interaction as some grave act, as opposed to the more flippant action that it usually is

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 08:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Guys, I actually don't have any problem with this review.

rim this, fuck that (Eric H.), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Just sayin', anonymous Internet sex can be sketchy.

rim this, fuck that (Eric H.), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:18 (thirteen years ago) link

you're gay, Eric?

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:31 (thirteen years ago) link

sure it can be sketchy, but that review makes it out to be Cruising-levels of ominous

"Does anybody know right now exactly where you are?"-- a reference to the commonly advocated practice of letting someone know the address of your hook-up in case you never turn up alive again.

is this really a thing?

lene lovage (elmo argonaut), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually I remember seeing ads/signs to such effect in gay papers and locales back in the '80s & 90s, usu after someone in Greater NY was dismembered by a pickup.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Friday, 2 July 2010 14:21 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i've read things advocating that exact thing (in dan savage columns i think) but i've never done it myself

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 14:28 (thirteen years ago) link

okay, i figure that might have been a wise common practice in a pre-internet, pre-cellular time but i never received any advice like that tbh.

lene lovage (elmo argonaut), Friday, 2 July 2010 14:29 (thirteen years ago) link

i can't quite imagine telling someone where i'm going in such an event. i mean, what a weird email or text that would be to receive.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 14:32 (thirteen years ago) link

it's a pretty antiquated sentiment cuz you're as likely to get dismembered by someone you meet online (probably less imo if it's a gay specific site like manhunt) as someone you meet and go home with from a bar

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 14:34 (thirteen years ago) link

My friends have encouraged me to do it on a couple of occasions. Not that the opportunity has ever come up....

Werner Herr'spotatochips (Stevie D), Friday, 2 July 2010 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

You're probably more likely to get dismembered by someone you know within 10 miles of your own home.

rim this, fuck that (Eric H.), Friday, 2 July 2010 14:36 (thirteen years ago) link

can u imag. one time i got scared and the guy startd to get all trippy cuz he was doing drugs, and he started to pick a fight with me. he was like "hey man, i rly don't think this is a good idea cuz you're just like - ::tweaky face:: tryin' to mess me with, yaknow, and i really don't appreciate it"

and when i looked into his eyes, i could see that he was gone - that any semblance of intelligence just kind of left the building

so i just played along with him and i said "i know, i know. you're right. i wasn't thinking" and i let him kick me out. yup.

a few things about me:
1- i got fired from the job i hated because i don't contain the 'right image' they wanted to project to their terrible, bourgeois berkeley numbfuck customers. bitter mostly because of the reasoning, not because i liked the job. the job sucked.

2- i am totally smitten with my man. we've been at it for two and a half months! we even had a three-way last week.

3- everyone should try having sex in a hot-tub. it is amazing.

4- HI YOU GAYS ARE AWESOME.

a few things about this thread:
1- re: 'not gay enough' conversation: for years and years i felt this way, then when i tried to make myself more gay, i realized how stupid even the less mainstream stuff can be, and started avoiding things altogether. i TOTALLY berated my ex n1ck (from t33ngirl fantasy) for being so into the circuit when he was last here, and he didn't get it— some people are just into being around the same cast of queens all the time, i think. i, on the other hand, like being around a rotating cast of queens, punks, artists, whatever. i guess that what i'm saying is that it really doesn't fucking matter whether you act 'gay enough' or like 'gay things.' while it might be harder to make gay friends, why the hell would you want some prissy hollister-bedecked fag as yr friend in the first place? he might suck good dick but he doesn't have much up there. all of you are intelligent gay creatures. don't waste your time thinking about whether you're gay enough.

2- i didn't attend any PRIDE festivities this year, a repeat of last year. EXCELLENT.

3- that Scissor Sisters review: the album is really quite good, and while it is a lot gayer than past albums, M4tt frames that aspect in a pejorative fashion, which is fucking dumb and he shld be slapped.

I do not know this Hollister thing.

I went looking for the guy from last Sat @ Metrop last night -- not knowing that the G train was split in two, or that it would stand still in the tunnel for 20 minutes -- but he is NOT there every night, it seems. :p

Half day at work and an off-site long lunch with some morning co-workers. Downside is I've slept off a good portion of a gorgeous afternoon.

Me and dude are having problems getting together due to opposite schedules, but we have tentative plans for queer cumbia night tomorrow. I am excited.

I've been feeling oddly satiated re: socializing lately. Even calling the boy I was seeing seems somehow repellent to me. I mean he's "nice" and everything but we have almost nothing in common and he's a bit passionless.
