This shooting-star part of logos was an essential part of the 1990s.

Believing that Bush and Gore were basically interchangable was very, very 1990s.

I actually saw a guy wearing a big Dr. Seuss hat covered with alien head icons on Saturday. If he had been driving a teal green American sedan it would have pretty much summed up the mid 90's for me.

joygoat, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Not for what I was doing then, but what I recall being ubiquitious.

70s revival

hating on the "greedy" 80s

ufo/paranormal fad

baggy clothes

"alternative"

everybody thinking irony was some new thing invented by hipsters and misusing the word every five minutes

people going on about postmodernism, even though they didn't even know what modernism was in the first place

max r, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:37 (sixteen years ago) link

loads of reactionary crap dressed up in trendy clothes:

lad culture, britpop, britart, anti-pc, pretending to be working class and therefore thick, etc...

LEDGE=KIND OF THE WORLD

I <3 everyone on this thread except the one or two peeps saying the 90s are no different from the 00's because shows follow same presmise, etc? Hello, missing the point that they don't look the same, etc.

Wish I could find a good picture of the awful striped denim that was popular when I was in early high school.

I actually kind of enjoy those Calvin Klein ads upthread. Some of them. A Warhol rip off to be sure, but...

roxymuzak, Monday, 1 October 2007 16:49 (sixteen years ago) link

i remember that, in the 90s, the 80s were considered the worst decade ever, and completely unrevivable. ha ha. good times.

, Monday, 1 October 2007 16:52 (sixteen years ago) link

every decade thinks that about the last one

a.v. club has this whole essay this week on how the 90s revival is finally beginning. i kinda wanna wait til this decade's over first.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 1 October 2007 17:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought it began a few years ago, to be honest.

i don't know i always thought "i love the 90s" was a terribly forced attempt at kick-starting a 90s revival that we weren't ready for yet

but fuck words

So far the only thing that really makes me go "wow, that was a different time" is the Windows 95 startup screen. Look at that thing!

Doctor Casino, Monday, 1 October 2007 17:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I remember back in high school we had to print our own t-shirts, and a class mate of mine did one with the Windows 95 (which had just come out) logo and a "no" red circle on top of it. I asked what was the point of it, and he told me he was against Bill Gates's monopoly, and I was kinda confused, because I didn't know anything about computer politics.

Tuomas, Monday, 1 October 2007 17:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Man, the Windows 95 startup screen used to scream "the future!" at me.

roxymuzak, Monday, 1 October 2007 17:55 (sixteen years ago) link

tuomas did you seriously just tell us a story about you once didn't understand something?
