or sometimes, it doesn't.

no one in my family ever had a liquor cabinet.

i'm definitely making full use of my parents' liquor cabinet next month, as i'm sort of being forced to move back in with them...

i helped subsidize the gin market on northern long island as a teenager, raiding my parents' liquor cabinet

i didn't raid my dad's liquor nearly as often as i pinched from his stash

Speaking from almost 23 years of experience, I can say that while on a global scale this is, I guess, a likely outcome, it is by no means a definitive truth, and some people are just fucked for a long while.

the aztec mystic pizza (Stevie D), Monday, 19 July 2010 14:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Which is why I haaaaated the movie "Broken English" so much, because it's all EVEN IF YR AWKWARD AND HAVE BAD LUCK, YOU WILL SERENDIPITOUSLY FIND TRUE LOVE AND ALL YOUR DREAMS WILL COME TRUE, which is simply not true. Some people don't win in the end.

Where do you live Tape Store? Maybe you just need to meet more people. When your possibilities are limited your mind becomes attracted to people who are ineligible, I think. It was definitely that way for me, but once I realized I could attract the right type, those attractions fell away.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be such a downer. FWIW I really, really hope Tape Store and rev and corey and I and everyone else all find people. And fast.

One of the guys I've always held as a pie-eyed prospect in a perfect world but unavailable ... just broke up with his BF of some five or six years. Uh-oh.

r (ico), Monday, 19 July 2010 18:11 (thirteen years ago) link

ha, thanks guys. :)

i found out a few weeks ago that this boy has a crush on me (first time in my life afaik). he's alright (nice, loves electrik red, is a photographer, could be beautiful w/ a haircut and a dif wardrobe), but i don't feel attracted to him. i'm not sure why. maybe i should just spend more time with him?

straight crush was teasing me about the whole thing--snuck up and put his arms around me and whispered 'it's [gay boy's name]' and i almost fainted :/

Yeah, speaking as the King of Negativity re: boy type stuff, shifting my mind into a patiently optimistic sort of place hasn't actually led to finding people, it's generally just a healthier and less stressful place to be?

which sounds really condescending and awful, but like...it'll happen if/when it happens, and until then, my life is plenty busy.

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Tape Store, you don't feel physically attracted to him, or you haven't clicked with him personally?

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:18 (thirteen years ago) link

because if it's the former, then you can't really change that, ya know?

but if it's the latter, then maybe let him grow on you. (not saying that you should make out with him, just give yrself some time to come around).

after being hung up for a while on unavailable guys (straight, not into you, boyfriend-ed, whatever) i often hold up new potentials against the perfectly unattainable (and unattainably perfect) dude and find them lacking. give him a chance on his own terms?

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:21 (thirteen years ago) link

physically i find him frustrating--he's got a beautiful face but he dresses like a confused hipster and his hair is gross imo. personally we're fine, but there haven't been any crazy sparks or anything (but i haven't spent that much time with him, just worked a few shifts together, chatted on the street, etc.)

exit through the (Tape Store), Monday, 19 July 2010 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link

for a moment I thought you were suggesting he looked like steve carell.

seems worth exploring, at least?

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:26 (thirteen years ago) link

there have been a variety of interesting boys semi-on-my-radar in june/july, but i'm moving in three weeks, and it seems...well, less than prudent to try and start anything atm, especially since none of them have actively expressed interest.

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:28 (thirteen years ago) link

that always happens

hey, moving could be v good for dating! 'wanna show me around?' etc. etc.

staying in canada?

exit through the (Tape Store), Monday, 19 July 2010 18:30 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, of course. it's more like. i am so busy with moving/paperwork/packing/generalized panic that finding the time to pursue anything is tough?

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:31 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah. just off to toronto for law school. and while i was born there, i haven't lived in the city since i was 9 mo. and i don't know it from a hole in the wall.

from what i gathered this weekend apartment hunting it is a city that is big and cold and sort of rude. sort of a leave-the-money-on-the-nightstand city?

BUT underneath the business-city shell, there are a handful of lovely neighbourhoods full of vinyl shops, second-hand bookstores, gourmet coffee and scruffy pierced+tatted baristas. if i ever have a moment to breathe outside of case studies and briefings, i am going to have a lot of fun there.

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 19 July 2010 18:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Tape Store, I shall spend the next three weeks practicing my vaguely-perplexed/lost-but-still-cute look!

who's being negative? flying solo has its perks. But if you just still want to get laid regularly you have to be rich, powerful, or gorgeous once you hit 40 (forgot to do that).

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Monday, 19 July 2010 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

as someone who spent years in unrequited bromances and other emotionally arid circumstances: blaming a lack of available prospects is a factor, but only to a point. my situation was of my own making, involving closeted fear and feelings of unworthiness. crushing on straight / unavailable guys was an unhealthy pattern for me, but it was *my* pattern -- not the fault of the gay dudes i wasn't interested in, nor the fault of the dudes i longed for.

not saying that there's anything *wrong* with you but you have to be honest with yourself about what your emotional needs are here.

if you want to get laid its not impossible, dont really believe age is a factor in that
