that phrase might cease to make my skin crawl when straight guys start regularly identifying as "gay-acting"

I'm like the teacher you had in school that you couldn't imagine having sex with anyone.

on avg I'm attracted to masculine dudes but it's really the bitchiness of femme guys that is a turn-off.
― fidel castro clone (corey), Saturday, 24 July 2010 18:16 (fourteen years ago) link
i guess i just find it really symptomatic of hetero********* (censored for alfred's delicate ears) values and automatically makes me think the person describing himself as such is a self-hating fag (not to say j0rdan is)

except when there's a cock in yr mouth, amirite?
I've been w/ guys all over the butch-femme spectrum; 'straight-acting' don't mean a thing.

anyway it's not a phrase i use to describe myself and i wasn't the one who used it in the first place, but it is what it is

i find femininity in gay men to be sexy in the context of their masculinity -- being totally femme isn't attractive to me
― ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 24 July 2010 18:37 (fourteen years ago) link
yea like i'm a queen but u should see me put away a meatloaf

Likely to be visiting friends in NYC late August as well. Sort of a last-jaunt before law school deprives me of a social life. NYC fags - There Will Be Beers?

idk how people are able to conceive of themselves on some continuum of masculinity. i can't really think abt myself on those terms?
― plax (ico), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:02 (fourteen years ago) link
I'm not a woman. I'm not a man. I am something that you'll never comprehend.
― fidel castro clone (corey), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link
plax, it's easier when you're surrounded by different iterations of masculinity.
― balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:13 (fourteen years ago) link
what does that even mean

Don't you hang out with other men?
― balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:16 (fourteen years ago) link
You compare yourself with these other men.
why would i want to do that?

You're probably assuming "compare yourself with other men" is a negative thing. All I meant to say is that when I'm in a group of guys it's as natural for me to think, "This guy's a swish, this guy's straight, this guy's an effeminate straight guy." I thought that's what everyone does, like stare critically at people's shoes.
― balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:34 (fourteen years ago) link
i feel like that would make me really self conscious
― plax (ico), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:36 (fourteen years ago) link
It's something I do too, and I don't think I'm overly self-conscious, but definitely conscious. It's just a part of reading non-verbal communication imo.

Right now I'm writing in Starbucks and two meters away is an Asian dude with appalling sandals, a ponytail, and a determined lisp. Oh -- and he ordered a non-fat vanilla latte.
― balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:44 (fourteen years ago) link
plax is being disingenuous. everyone compares themselves to others. "Because you breathe" of course, well put.
― jed_, Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:46 (fourteen years ago) link
obv about some things, not on some taxonomy of manliness thing. i dont even know how i would do that.

― plax (ico), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link
it's a perfectly natural thing to do. girls compare themselves to other girls, and men compare themselves to other men. it's just what ppl (and animals) do. a lot of girls feel at odds with the idea of being "girly," and a lot of men feel at odds with the concept of masculinity. especially in the marketing department, we are constantly barraged with ideas of masculinity, and when you have other men buying into it, it becomes all-too-natural to size yourself up in this way. especially when you are friends with other gay men, you started to compare your behavior with theirs.
also, as a gay man, you start with a preconceived set of insecurities in the way of your behavior. you come from a place of comparison -- a place of difference. so, questioning yourself in this way becomes the norm for a lot of us. it is a survival strategy to evaluate how "normal" you are insofar as society is concerned with acceptable male behavior.
so, while i think it's cool that you do not concern yourself with this, i also think it's unusual.
― janice (surm), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:06 (fourteen years ago) link
i also think it is your culture that determines a lot of this, and i suspect ireland operates on a different spectrum with regard to gender and sexuality.
