My new beard has proven interesting; I didn't know I'd need to sport two when I go out.

Likely to be visiting friends in NYC late August as well. Sort of a last-jaunt before law school deprives me of a social life. NYC fags - There Will Be Beers?

Hi, gays. Just sweated off a hangover at the pool. My tan is vicious.

I can't wait to meet J0rdan to see if he's more butch than I am. We may have to arm wrestle.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 24 July 2010 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

idk how people are able to conceive of themselves on some continuum of masculinity. i can't really think abt myself on those terms?

plax (ico), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not a woman. I'm not a man. I am something that you'll never comprehend.

fidel castro clone (corey), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:04 (thirteen years ago) link

plax, it's easier when you're surrounded by different iterations of masculinity.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:13 (thirteen years ago) link

what does that even mean

plax (ico), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Don't you hang out with other men?

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:16 (thirteen years ago) link

You compare yourself with these other men.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:16 (thirteen years ago) link

why would i want to do that?

plax (ico), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Because you breathe?

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:19 (thirteen years ago) link

man dont diagnose me with ur neuroses

plax (ico), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I wish I had some.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:31 (thirteen years ago) link

You're probably assuming "compare yourself with other men" is a negative thing. All I meant to say is that when I'm in a group of guys it's as natural for me to think, "This guy's a swish, this guy's straight, this guy's an effeminate straight guy." I thought that's what everyone does, like stare critically at people's shoes.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i feel like that would make me really self conscious

plax (ico), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:36 (thirteen years ago) link

It's something I do too, and I don't think I'm overly self-conscious, but definitely conscious. It's just a part of reading non-verbal communication imo.

fidel castro clone (corey), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Right now I'm writing in Starbucks and two meters away is an Asian dude with appalling sandals, a ponytail, and a determined lisp. Oh -- and he ordered a non-fat vanilla latte.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:44 (thirteen years ago) link

plax is being disingenuous. everyone compares themselves to others. "Because you breathe" of course, well put.

jed_, Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:46 (thirteen years ago) link

obv about some things, not on some taxonomy of manliness thing. i dont even know how i would do that.

plax (ico), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:48 (thirteen years ago) link

and i feel like inserting yourself into one must involve like, monitoring yourself

plax (ico), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:50 (thirteen years ago) link

& you don't?

jed_, Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i have enough things to make me feel self conscious, plenty

plax (ico), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link

it's a perfectly natural thing to do. girls compare themselves to other girls, and men compare themselves to other men. it's just what ppl (and animals) do. a lot of girls feel at odds with the idea of being "girly," and a lot of men feel at odds with the concept of masculinity. especially in the marketing department, we are constantly barraged with ideas of masculinity, and when you have other men buying into it, it becomes all-too-natural to size yourself up in this way. especially when you are friends with other gay men, you started to compare your behavior with theirs.

also, as a gay man, you start with a preconceived set of insecurities in the way of your behavior. you come from a place of comparison -- a place of difference. so, questioning yourself in this way becomes the norm for a lot of us. it is a survival strategy to evaluate how "normal" you are insofar as society is concerned with acceptable male behavior.

so, while i think it's cool that you do not concern yourself with this, i also think it's unusual.

janice (surm), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i also think it is your culture that determines a lot of this, and i suspect ireland operates on a different spectrum with regard to gender and sexuality.

great post, R.

Awright, gays, I'm going drinking. Come join me. I'll buy you a sour apple martini, surm. Tabes, you'll like the blond Argentine who's meeting us.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 25 July 2010 01:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Guys here who've met me--am I "masc" or "straight-acting"?? Because I don't think I am, but everyone's shocked when they find out I'm gay. But maybe I let loose a bit when I'm around people who know I'm gay.

Lexaprotend (Stevie D), Sunday, 25 July 2010 02:40 (thirteen years ago) link

xp table - no braids - tall, thin, fauxhawk-y, pretty cute

sarahel, Sunday, 25 July 2010 02:41 (thirteen years ago) link

tabes is it shitty if I start going to, like, Bash Back mtgs in hopes of getting some?

Lexaprotend (Stevie D), Sunday, 25 July 2010 02:43 (thirteen years ago) link

my more feminine side is v. connected to my sexual psyche (no idea what i mean by that so don't ask), maybe even fetishistic, so v. few ppl ever get to see it come into play

temple beth-enny (donna rouge), Sunday, 25 July 2010 07:13 (thirteen years ago) link

The "continuum of masculinity" can be a lotta fun when you consciously play with it, ie, turn your femme/butch dials up and down depending on the situation. (the world of 'roleplay' is one part of this, e.g. leather daddies who have Judy Garland shrines in the house)

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 July 2010 14:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Hah, as if there are ones that don't.

Lexaprotend (Stevie D), Sunday, 25 July 2010 14:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't know if I play with my masculinity, I just float around trying to be friendly and civilized.
