Bacon, Chicken, Curry, Pizza

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:45 (thirteen years ago) link

FWIW I figured curry wasn't just limited to the Anglo-Indian curries which are the staple of Brit diets but included other yummy dishes like Beef Panaeng, Katsu Curry, Curried Goat etc.

Bacon, Hard Cheeses, Pasta, Salad

but my heart isn't in any of it. how can i sacrifice all pastries just for bacon? and chicken such a crucial link in so many wonderful things (just broth alone). taking pasta over curry cuz i eat it more often and i can still order biryani. but jeez. leaving pizza vs. salad, utterly impossible choice. took salad only cuz i know it will lose.

salad dressing does not come from stores. = olive oil, balsamic vinegar, minced garlic, lots of dijon, s&p. unbeatable. almost as good as pizza....

actually agree with this, far superior to store stuff and have to travel at least 50m less to get.

okay dude seriously, there is a lot to lol at in British food but one thing that is almost unilaterally impeccable and better than what you can get in the US is Indian food

I will take you to London and we will go to Brick Lane and you will be amazed

huge truthbomb

try the curry mile in Manchester, the food I had there last time was mind-meltingly good

if curry wins the whole tourney, I am 100% happy with that result

Pastries
I'm going to take a controversial stance on pastries to encompass anything made with pastry - including both savoury and sweet pies! even though both were voted out by a bunch of disgusting savages. I'm going to continue to mentally put pies in extant categories right to the end. So if this thing ends up being won by soup or w/e, for me this will be "soup, including savoury pies". it's the only way to get justice.

Hard Cheeses - would miss slightly more than chicken. Although at the moment I'm supposed to be keeping away from cheese to stop me from being a fattay. Actually, wait, just thinking about what fits into the hard cheese category - cheddar. cheshire. stilton. emmenthal. gouda. manchego. paneer. - cheese a clearer winner than I first thought

Curry - brit definition, no contest . Pasta just tends to get in the way of nice food, and for me its a myth that its somehow elevated in the hands of good italian chefs. the price gets elevated, definitely, they must make some fucking profit on pasta dishes, but it's always disappointingly close to something I could cook easily at home. And I'm a terrible cook.

Salad. from the garden is fresh and lovely. a good restaurant caesar salad is one of lifes joys and go-to for wanting to feel healthier after a night out. I'm not going to knock pizza, can be great, but good salad is eating pure sunshine.

My vote for 'pasta' is a vote for plain penne with pesto, feel like that's the default pasta somehow? Sauces are represented in the poll I guess.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link

ok ok, i will try yer brit curry the next time i am there sheesh

until then tho im not giving it the nod because a grouping that would be based on "stuff w/curry in it" would be all-encompassing madness

i will back hard cheeses as my personal #1 in it to win it choice (which is not going to happen)

tomofthenest builds a compelling case. have no regrets re my pasta vote, but fuck bacon imo, pie crust = pastry

Pastries, Hard Cheeses, Pasta, Salad

I had a chausson aux pommes the other day that was the butteriest thing I have ever experienced (& I liked it)

btw I'm gonna vote against pizza all the way until the end because of the atrocities committed in its name (as discussed on another thread)

what euler said. tho pizza is damn hard to deny. you could put some arugula on it after it comes out the oven and call it a salat

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 19:03 (thirteen years ago) link

salad seems such an arbitrary designation. like, most of the things i like that come in a salad also come on a pizza. except for beets. but i could have roasted beets and consider them "beets" and not "salad" - so, pizza.

Also: pastries, hard cheese, curry (though it was a tough call against pasta)

sarahel, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 19:39 (thirteen years ago) link

could you not make beet pizza with similar stuffs that people put on potato pizza? like chevre & walnuts, or gorg & rosemary? something like that...

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link

if pastries go down tom is gonna find a way to classify savory pies as 'sushi' or something

iatee, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link

beets are kinda maybe too sweet tho

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah - i can imagine a pizza with roasted beets - i'm pretty sure i could go somewhere within a 10 mile radius and find one - but i think they are a bit too sweet and i like them separate from other things, except for maybe with some other sweet but tangy fruit or vegetable and a bit of chevre or soft cheese. (RIP soft cheeses)

I mean - no doubt britain is great for curry but at least give us credit for the amazing stuff not just the sub-par (I might just have been unlucky but I never had even a 3/10 curry the 5 times I've eaten on brick lane)

cozen, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link

pies. (gbx), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link

There are decent curry places on Brick Lane but I've stopped going because of the guys that try to flag you down with coupons to their place. And then there is the Shampan, which is serious about being Bangladeshi. These days I go to Green Street in East Ham for South Asian things.

good dry-cured ham for a start

― flashing drill + penis fan (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:20 (Yesterday)

I saw this earlier at uni where I am banned and it was a fucking massive truthbomb - cured meats are incredible, especially this - the Spanish know what they're bloody doing with ham - also I didn't consider saucisson and salami amid 'sausages' - different thing IMO, the cured stuff is obviously godhead

pies. (gbx), Thursday, 29 July 2010 00:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I asked to be ILX banned so I'd finish my course, and I was temp-banned on my home ISP but perma-banned at uni...just how it went

British Burrito (acoleuthic), Thursday, 29 July 2010 00:17 (thirteen years ago) link

pies. (gbx), Thursday, 29 July 2010 00:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Someone temp-banned me at home (forksclovetofu, in fact, in his first act as site mod, at my bidding), but someone else heard my pleas for ILX separation while I was posting from university and consequently permabanned that IP (not ISP, wtf), a decision which I have never seen fit to reverse

high quality dry-cured ham is unbelievable

taking pasta over curry cuz i eat it more often and i can still order biryani.

A biryani can be considered a curry too (I'm looking at a menu at the moment that has it so classed). Not that I want to get into an argument about the (non?)definition of curries, just saying.

plus all kinds of people on all kinds of money re cured meats. proscuitto, salumi, etc. man, that is what gives SAUSIDGE. the edge over whateverthefuk it happens to be up against. not the dried ham so much. but the dried sausidge. dude in town makes the most insane finochionna and MOLE SALAMI you has ever put in your mouth. worth overturning the likes of broccoli, crab, pasta or peaches for, just sayin...

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:30 (thirteen years ago) link

i like a biryani but it kind of needs a sauce-based curry to go with it imo

(in the uk it tends to come with a vegetable curry by default, but i'm sure we can take it as read that in the US - quite possibly south asia too but that would be irrelevant to an ILX fight about south asian food anyway i guess - this would be the height of disgusting savagery without needing the 3000 angry posts about bad teeth)

goodbye bacon, you are nice but way overrated, wd have voted for ham over pretty much everything, but here i'm going pastries, ???, curry, pizza - why yes i am pretty fat, thank you for asking - just need to work out whether something versatile but not very exciting on its own (chicken) beats the occasional treat of delicious hard cheese

rah rah rah wd smash the oiks (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 29 July 2010 11:04 (thirteen years ago) link

ok, I made my pastry/bacon choice.

Bacon, Hard Cheeses, Curry, Pizza

The most important vote here (to me) is for good parmesan, and occasionally Parmigiano Reggiano when I'm feeling rich.
