'army of shadows' and 'spirit of the beehive' are the two best movies ever.

'army of shadows' and 'spirit of the beehive' are two of the most overrated movies ever.

spirit of the beehive compared to what, e.t. the extraterrestrial?

We thought you knew already! ;-)
I picked up on a payday and finally watched it a few weeks ago. Pretty spiffy presentation. It's good to see Criterion getting around to some of the major canonical stuff (Bicycle Thieves, the upcoming issues ofBreathless and Days of Heaven) that's thus far escaped their net. Could bode well for stuff like Open City.

I have a total of $55 in my wallet and had resolved to stop buying DVDs completely. Do I eat sammiches for a while and buy The Bicycle Thieves... or do I go without.

I hardly ever buy em. BT will always be around.

Nice, hope there's a Roeg-boxset a la Cassavettes.
Chungking Express will be awesome I bet. The current US DVD is a disaster.

I, too, came here to post about Chungking.
So what's a good blu-ray player? I keep wanting to get a PS3 for that and GTA IV, but the latter is better on the xbox I think? And consoles make too much noise. Toshiba blu-ray?
― mh, Thursday, 8 May 2008 01:17 (sixteen years ago) link
I can't understand getting a blu ray player instead of a PS3 at this point. None of the stand alone players seem to have a killer feature (and none of them play PS3 games) and aren't really cheaper.
― Spencer Chow, Thursday, 8 May 2008 01:36 (sixteen years ago) link
Cheapest player on Amazon is $393.84. PS3 is $399 and the remote control is $20.
― Spencer Chow, Thursday, 8 May 2008 01:38 (sixteen years ago) link
Does the PS3 have a timer display? That's all I look for in a player.
― C. Grisso/McCain, Thursday, 8 May 2008 01:39 (sixteen years ago) link
Wow, they're doing "El Norte"!
I had no idea it was a big enough movie to get this kind of treatment, that's really great.

Someone help!
I'm trying to narrow this list down to two...which TWO of these do I need to own? All things considered...the film, the package, the extras, etc. etc.

Of course. I've got a bunch of other Criterions but haven't bought any for a couple years now. Pretty exciting. I wish I could afford four, but...alas.

Two-Lane Blacktop, but two copies.
If not that, TLB and Ran.

House of Games is fun, but it doesn't look any better on DVD than on the regular cable showings (or maybe IFC doesn't have it in heavy rotation anymore?).
― milo z, Friday, 25 July 2008 17:22 (sixteen years ago) link
I hear that. I got the Varda box from them a few weeks back during the password sale (came out to like 55 bucks), which was probably the only way I could get it. Wanted to get the Rohmer one then too, but they suddenly stopped carrying it.
