1. Charles Bronson were fucking awesome. Sorry the lyrics are way silly, but they were an awesome band. Especially live.

2. I don't want to compare anything with anyone. I don't really understand where you got that from, to be honest.

i mean, my sexual experiences have nothing to do with the way i feel about marriage. i only care whether you are happy with whatever sex you are getting.

like seriously, sorry if i pissed anyone off. it was a troll move.

pounding beats of worship (the table is the table), Thursday, 5 August 2010 03:20 (thirteen years ago) link

It was a troll move for me to even bring it up in the first place. But it was definitely an irony to note.

No matter; five years from now, all of us in the States will find it our legal option to be duly gentrified.

xpost And I think it's pretty damned transgressive, if you want to look at it that way, to snatch away one of the (supposedly) most sacred bastions of normalcy away from the normals. But that's just me.

Gay marriage passes and all the fags start bickering about nonsense. Welcome to ILX.

Like...I am invested in the legality of gay marriage in America insofar as DOMA etc. is discriminatory and stupid, and people should have the right to get married if they so choose, but to some extent this seems so foreign to me.

I live in a country where gay marriage has been legal since 2003, and a province where, gay or straight, a sizeable percentage (if not a majority) of people don't bother getting married at all. Quebec is all about common law partnerships, basically. Kind of rocks my world (and pisses me off) that people are still so scandalized by the idea of a couple of dudes or chicks marrying each other. Hopelessly antiquated, and fucking depressing that y'all are still dealing with this, when there are so many more important and less morally obvious issues to work on.

Which is to say, yay for the defeat of Prop 8, let's hope it sticks so fagz can get married, and we can all start bickering over things either more important or more trivial.

Y /\/\ /\/\ \/ (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 5 August 2010 03:44 (thirteen years ago) link

The latter.

I have been listening to "Future Lovers" (from Confessions) sort of nonstop since that dude and I danced to it in his living room last week. Erotica is probably my favorite album, tied with Ray of Light. I mean, it's the one where she does "house"! Also, "Rain".

does "more trivial" mean more obsessive 40-post streaks about all this awful music you guys like?

hey tonight, I went to MARY'S in Atlanta, voted #1 gay bar in USA by the ever-lovin' LOGO Channel. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I'm gonna give em the ben of the D and say it was a slow night. (and the DJ did play Pulp's "Babies")

OK, this is probably stupid of me to bring up BUT snark/smugness/quips aside:

Tabes, it is quite clear how you feel abt marriage (gay/straight alike) and apparent that you have little interest in getting one, but do you feel that the option should be at least afforded to those who are really into it?

En Moog (Stevie D), Thursday, 5 August 2010 13:12 (thirteen years ago) link

i didn't really respond in full last night because honestly i was pissed off and needed some time to process my reaction. but anyway:

same-sex marriage may be equivalent for legal purposes to heterosexual marriage but they are NOT symmetrical, culturally speaking, and i don't think they can or should be! and i think that bemoaning gay marriage as 'gentrification' just obscures the fact that marriages, gay AND straight, can be as queer and unconventional as the partners involved; there are many different purposes of marriage and each union expresses those purposes in their own unique proportion. equal legal recognition just ensures that gays can enjoy *all* of those purposes fully.

i really feel i have a personal stake in this issue, so i definitely personalized ted's posts as an attack (especially since they immediately followed my post on the subject), even if it wasn't intended as such.

so. just had to say something. return to trivial pursuits if you like. :\

also in the UK we have gay marriage of a sort, and have done for five years or so, except it's called "civil partnership" and you can't legally call yourself "married". this is set to change pretty soon, i think. i hope. i'm all for marriage!

jed_, Thursday, 5 August 2010 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

but the key thing, of course, is that it doesn't matter whether you, as a homo, are for it or against it. the right of equality overrides your personal take on it.

in other words, what elmo said.

jed_, Thursday, 5 August 2010 15:51 (thirteen years ago) link

some xposts:

surm, i do compare notes, but i wasn't comparing notes above in the instance where Alfred was accusing me of doing so. that's why i was confused— go up and read it if you care that much.

elmo, i agree with you in many ways. i just don't think that the State should really have any control over how people form relationships and what privileges they get when they form them. this is an admittedly naive belief, yes, but my question is: if your unmarried partner of 20 years wants to visit you in the hospital, should that person be allowed to do so? FUCK YES, and that permission shouldn't come from the State.

but mostly what this is about, for me, is an enshrining of marriage as the only way to express legitimate 'love' — note that many news outlets have been using language such as LOVE OVERTURNS H8. i find this construct to be completely false, incredibly insulting to many loving couples who have chosen NOT to get married, as well as continuing a system of privilege that has oppressed gays, lesbians, and women for years. indeed, it also enshrines a monogamy which, while admittedly pretty fucking awesome in many ways, has also been shown to be a relatively recent and somewhat unnatural state of being.

that said, i understand your points, elmo, and wish you all the best. you're a great guy, and whoever you end up marrying (i'm assuming it's the bf) is truly lucky.

stevie, i don't have a problem with other gayz getting married. just don't put down other ways of building/sustaining relationships, which seems to be the sort of outcome we're headed towards. i mean, in two years, are people going to start asking m4tt and i if we're gonna get hitched? i certainly fucking hope not. that would be wildly annoying and insulting, imho.

okay.

forgot to add that, despite my opinion on the issue, the 'other' side's blatant homophobia and horribl obfuscation is/was truly sickening. fuck them.

plax (ico), Thursday, 5 August 2010 17:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Thank you for the clarification, and your take makes more sense when it's rationalized and spelled out like that. Not the case when you come in bellowing "fuck gay marriage." Yes, there is a time in ones life to hope for that which does not exist, but there's also a time to acknowledge an attainable reality.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 August 2010 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

i.e. YES to all your points that The State should have no claim on how and who I love ... though an acknowledgment that those gov't constructs are capable of shaping people's opinions on, say, homosexuality and, ergo, are worth reorganizing in the form of legalized gay marriage would be nice

legal marriage has about as much to do with "love" as electing a president has to do with "hope": window dressing.

Window dressing to what? You don't even believe in love. If anything, love is the window dressing to marriage.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 August 2010 21:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Gays now say marriage is about love the way the fundies say it's about religion. Those are the things individuals bring to it; the state does it for bookkeeping and taxes.
