Yo, so I went to this bar and sat next to this guy who was rly cute, and he started talking to me and we told each other abt ourselves, and he seemed geuninely interested and flirty and laughed at my jokes, etc., and then bought me a drink, and at one point when I left to pee and came back he drunkenly/adorably jokingly said something like "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE".

And then that was it; he just ignored me for the rest of the night and hooked up with like six other guys. What. the fuck. Like, seriously, the whole thing lasted maybe 10 or 20 minutes. Who does this????

I'm feeling like a nostalgic old pervert because, via various facebook run-ins, I have re-connected with people from my old summer camp where, at the age of 12, I figured out I was gay because of how I felt about my fellow campers and *this* particular camp counselor:

On "New Wave Day" (a day when all in the camp were supposed to dress up in punk/new wave outfits in order to eat lunch in the cafeteria) he saw my depressed look and said "hey bud, you look like you could use a Cool Stripe"- and proceeded to run a line of scotch tape across the bridge of my nose in order to give me a low-budget "Adam Ant" face makeup look. But since I sat on his lap while he applied this particular bit of faggy decoration, it was sweet torture. Okay, just had to share with y'all.

I had the first inklings that I was gay at summer camp too — when my bunkmates pulled the sheets off of a sleeping bunkmate's bed to reveal that he was wearing (very thin) briefs (this was when it became uncool to wear boxers). Having a communal shower didn't hurt either.

Wait -- when did it become uncool?

I wish I boasted the kind of hips that could wear boxers.

In my peer group — boxers just became de facto better than briefs, which I pretty much held to until I started wearing clothes that actually fit me.

that very combo was a big concern of mine when I was a camper too.

I'm kind of embarrassed to blather on here, but it's a weird thing to be so swept away by this fuzzy, not very distinct photo. The idea of gay 12 year olds is an uncomfortable one for queer adults, I reckon, for obvious reasons. the risks of exploitation seem to hover very close, and how can someone that young really know anyway? But I can remember very clearly how awful I felt that summer as the knowledge of what was going on with me when I looked at other boys when we had to go skinnydipping at the pool sank in and registered. And everybody at the camp, all the older kids and counselors etc. were Nice People who could sense that I was incredibly depressed. They all kept trying to help me and figure out what was wrong, and I couldn't talk about it and had to make up not very persuasive excuses, which just made me feel more isolated. That YMCA camp in Kentucky was a regular Well of Loneliness, I tells ya. (or Well of Horniness?)
