I'm feeling like a nostalgic old pervert because, via various facebook run-ins, I have re-connected with people from my old summer camp where, at the age of 12, I figured out I was gay because of how I felt about my fellow campers and *this* particular camp counselor:

On "New Wave Day" (a day when all in the camp were supposed to dress up in punk/new wave outfits in order to eat lunch in the cafeteria) he saw my depressed look and said "hey bud, you look like you could use a Cool Stripe"- and proceeded to run a line of scotch tape across the bridge of my nose in order to give me a low-budget "Adam Ant" face makeup look. But since I sat on his lap while he applied this particular bit of faggy decoration, it was sweet torture. Okay, just had to share with y'all.

I had the first inklings that I was gay at summer camp too — when my bunkmates pulled the sheets off of a sleeping bunkmate's bed to reveal that he was wearing (very thin) briefs (this was when it became uncool to wear boxers). Having a communal shower didn't hurt either.

I wish I boasted the kind of hips that could wear boxers.

In my peer group — boxers just became de facto better than briefs, which I pretty much held to until I started wearing clothes that actually fit me.

I'm kind of embarrassed to blather on here, but it's a weird thing to be so swept away by this fuzzy, not very distinct photo. The idea of gay 12 year olds is an uncomfortable one for queer adults, I reckon, for obvious reasons. the risks of exploitation seem to hover very close, and how can someone that young really know anyway? But I can remember very clearly how awful I felt that summer as the knowledge of what was going on with me when I looked at other boys when we had to go skinnydipping at the pool sank in and registered. And everybody at the camp, all the older kids and counselors etc. were Nice People who could sense that I was incredibly depressed. They all kept trying to help me and figure out what was wrong, and I couldn't talk about it and had to make up not very persuasive excuses, which just made me feel more isolated. That YMCA camp in Kentucky was a regular Well of Loneliness, I tells ya. (or Well of Horniness?)

dr3w, that story pretty accurately describes school experiences. camp for me was...ahem...JHU's CTY program at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, so i was surrounded by weird freaky smart kids like myself. i first was 'out' at camp. it was kind of amazing, in retrospect.

i didn't really ever go to summer camp in the normal sense -- my only camp experiences were school class trips etc. so i was surrounded by my teachers -- no sun-kissed nipples of shirtless camp-counselors for me.

but i was sent on a camping / biking trip through Maine when i was like 15, and got up to a little bit of sneaky groping of sleeping tent-mates. i was a pervy lil dude, still am, no doubt.
