"hipster" come to completely and exactly supplant "hippie" as the catch-all word for young people with fashionable clothes whose source of income is unknown but probably suspect and who seem to be irritatingly more sexually successful than we/i are/am
― Tracer Hand, Saturday, 15 November 2008 14:03 (fifteen years ago) link
um, what? i think the hippie connection makes sense in that people have used both terms with disdain to refer to the inauthenticity of the fashion/behavior choices involved, but as for sex (do hipsters have sex? i didn't know), we, like, don't live in the '60s anymore and stuff.

sigh. salty pistachio soft serve was such a disappointment. dense, oily texture + really, really aggressive pistachio flavor + extreme saltiness = dud. i loved the stuff i had for dessert at the noodle bar earlier this year (cannoli flavor), but this was just bad.

nah - it would have been $15 for that and the soft serve, which is like how much i spend on lunch in a week.

hello! i need a really really tasty upscale restaurant in manhattan. something that will impress southern aristrocrat types from nashville while also catering to a contemporary new york lady
...
― Surmounter, Sunday, 30 November 2008 16:41 (fifteen years ago) link
where in manhattan?
― :) Mrs Edward Cullen XD (max), Sunday, 30 November 2008 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link
what do the following words and phrases mean?
"tasty," "upscale," "impress," "southern aristrocrat," "contemporary," "lady"
― gabbneb, Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:26 (fifteen years ago) link
this explains a lot
― ice cr?m, Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:26 (fifteen years ago) link
i am guessing the southern aristocrat has a 'family name'
― very quotatious (tehresa), Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link
i think we're going to Veritas, even tho the decor isn't like WHOA. supposedly the food is wonderful.

u dont want the southern aristocrats to think yr showing off

― ice cr?m, Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:03 (fifteen years ago) link
well the thing is they're taking everyone out for dinner in ny so i think they wanna feel like they're treating us to the cream o the crop ;)
ya they're real polite
― Surmounter, Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:05 (fifteen years ago) link
oh man i love it when ppl take me out to fancy dinners
― Tanganyika laughter epidemic (gbx), Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link
i've heard great things about Veritas, though the chef who started it left a while back. (are they wine people? if so, there's also Cru)
showy southern aristocrats looking to take others for cream of crop = Bouley, Daniel, Aureole, Le Bernardin if they're more adventurous, Four Seasons for decor over food. if they picked Veritas, they may be more serious than I'm treating them.
― gabbneb, Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link
veritas is a real serious wine place, make sure youve got someone knowledgeable with u surmo

is per se the best restaurant in new york?
― Tracer Hand, Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:12 (fifteen years ago) link
great pasta and duck egg sounds great to me. thanks!
― carne asada, Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:14 (fifteen years ago) link
i think many would say that if they have to choose a best, it might be per se. i can't imagine it's twice as good as Jean Georges, which is almost half the price.
― gabbneb, Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:26 (fifteen years ago) link
it gets the top food rating in the latest Zagat, ahead of Le Bernardin, Daniel and Jean Georges, and also the top service rating, plus 2nd place for decor (after over-the-top, Park-viewing Asiate). it's not among the top 10 most popular restaurants.
Michelin gives it 3 stars along with Jean Georges, Le Bernardin and Masa, while Gayot places it and Daniel on top, with the other three a step below
The NYT gives all five of these four stars, while NY magazine gives Per Se four stars along with 9 other restaurants, a step below five-starred Le Bernardin and Masa
― gabbneb, Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:45 (fifteen years ago) link
Is it not among the top ten most popular because of its price?
