yeah, i think you can definitely stumble across parts of Denver that just feel like dull office parks where no one ever goes. but a bunch of the neighborhoods (wash park, s. broadway, highlands) really have nice, classic atmospheres. and downtown is surprisingly packed with stuff these days -- tons of great restaurants, awesome places to drink beer (a big part of my job currently is this: www.denverbeerfest.com), one of the better bookstores in the world ... oh, lotsa medicinal marijuana these days too.

dunno, i think one of the main problems with the perception of Denver, is that there's not a lot of romance/mystique surrounding it. when you tell people you live/work in Denver they're like "oh ..."

tylerw, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:23 (thirteen years ago) link

oh this place is wonderful for last minute-ness.

also denver used to have more mystique, but then they tore down buckingham square!

homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:34 (thirteen years ago) link

tyler, where do you live if you work here but don't live here? this is intriguing

homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:38 (thirteen years ago) link

oh, i just live in Longmont. i originally moved to/worked in boulder, and then my wife and i wanted to buy a house, and longmont is much cheaper than boulder. and then i ended up getting a job in Denver. fortunately i work from home half of the time, so i don't have to make the commute every day.

tylerw, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

It's definitely a place where you kind of have to know a local to find the good stuff. Lots of people come here and stay downtown, wander around LoDo and the 16th street mall and crap and that's their only impression of the city. There's a lot more. It could stand to be more interesting, but the good news is that it's getting more and more so--there's a lot of support for local music and art, the weather doesn't totally suck, and there is the world's largest hobby train shoppe on south broadway (according to its signage).

homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:44 (thirteen years ago) link

yikes, that is a long drive. so people in longmont think that denver is boring?

homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:45 (thirteen years ago) link

haha, no, i don't think people in Longmont think Denver is boring. Friends on east/west coast might think Denver is boring.

tylerw, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:47 (thirteen years ago) link

and yeah, Caboose Hobbies! Pretty rad.

tylerw, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

well you can just brag that you're that much closer to the lyons pinball museum!

homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:49 (thirteen years ago) link

are you involved with the local art scene? another thing i'm working on now is Denver Arts Week ... I can never tell whether people think it's a cool event, or just sort of lame. i feel like they don't do a good job of really engaging with the arts community, it just ends up being "there are galleries and museums" check em out.

tylerw, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:52 (thirteen years ago) link

however, when I made Adam start this thread in 2005 I was WAY more into Denver then. When I first moved here, in 2002 it was amazing. It was dirt cheap (I shared an apartment and my rent was $200/month) and there were all sorts of interesting things going on. I am sure there are interesting things still going on, but I'm just older and more into staying home and grumping around.

Another thing is that it's very easy to meet people here. Folks are interested in getting to know you. I definitely hear from friends who have moved to other places that they miss that about Denver.

ha! maybe I'll apply. i used to write quite a bit for them. don't know if i'd actually like doing it though. (not that I'm terribly qualified.)

tylerw, Monday, 13 September 2010 21:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Since when would being terribly qualified matter? If you're funny like O'neal, you can rise from being a city editor to Head Newswire Editors and Deliverer of Snark, to the point where people complain when you're not doing Newswire updates

These things may be entirely my imagination, and I have no idea if the people I saw were even Denverites, but I was in Denver's airport last night (on the way from Philadelphia to Albuquerque) and I don't think I've ever seen so many guys striding around like cowboys. It's like there really is this macho thing going on that is totally not the urban sort of macho I'm used to, more ranch macho. I also swear I have never had so many women looking at me with appreciation at one time (not counting when I dance, when women who otherwise would never notice me suddenly start smiling at me). Is the male-to-female ratio really that tough there? But as I say, it could just be my imagination or at least the filters I had on regarding Denver. Plus I was just exhausted and desperate to get home.

My impressions of Denver based on lots of prejudice plus about two and a half hours spent in the airport. . .

in other denver news: i'm not going, but dudes from my old band are doing a GBV tribute set at the 404 Club tomorrow. i think a replacements cover band is playing too. so it'll be drunk at least.

tylerw, Friday, 22 October 2010 16:47 (thirteen years ago) link

kate78 that is fine!!!! my friend from alaska wants to move to denver for a couple of months.

homosexual II, Friday, 22 October 2010 16:50 (thirteen years ago) link

404 is doing lots of shows lately; went to one last weekend that was super fun! my friend andrew is going to be playing in his band tonight at the Lion's Lair - its something called FRANKSGIVING

Come celebrate the 15th Annual Celebration of Frank Bell not kicking the bucket from Crohn's disease with special guests Rockabilly Madman Ralph Gean, Get Your Going! and LITTLE FYODOR!!! Free franks, the official foodstuff of Franksgiving!!! Donation bucket for Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America! $5, cheap!!

Actually copying and pasting that is kinda making me sad that I agreed to go. Rockabilly Madman? :/ :/ :/ Oh well at least it's for a good cause.

Also Bad Weather California is playing tomorrow night at Rhinoceropolis with Royal Baths and the Fresh & Onlys (3553 Brighton Blvd)

homosexual II, Friday, 22 October 2010 16:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I am pretending as if someone might find the above info useful

homosexual II, Friday, 22 October 2010 16:58 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the lion's lair, we played there a couple of times. i've seen bad weather california once or twice, they're good. i've sorta stopped going to local shows in denver since we had a baby, though.

is this thread ever going to take off?

homosexual II, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 02:12 (twelve years ago) link

I'm a Boulderite. Well, actually I'm from the east coast, but I moved out here for a job and to be close to the mountains. Denver has been winning me over lately. I doubt I'd move down there, but I've had a great time.

I saw Snake Rattle Rattle Snake at the Hi Dive. They were pretty enjoyable. Certainly better than the options in Boulder: madolines or bad electronica.

Benjamin-, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 02:33 (twelve years ago) link

hmmm. This thread should take off! I'm a Denver-person too. I suppose we could talk more about Denvery/Bouldery things itt. I'm not usually comfortable putting myself out there like this but w/e it's ilx: I play in a band called Saturn Cowboys, we do kind of rock stuff that maybe somebody out there might be into. http://saturncowboys.bandcamp.com/ <--- I like to think of this as our 'ambitious but flawed first album'

So, we're playing a show on March 24 at Lion's Lair with Bonnie and the Beard & Tin Horn Prayer, both excellent bands, + we'll be releasing the above album as a CD there. If anyone wants to come and say hey, lemme know!

i'll be there! i look vaguely like a "nathan fillion + the werewolf from twilight hybrid" according to a guy at the bar last night
