My dad was mortally ill before I really started having sex with men, and my mom is an 82-year-old Irish Catholic bingo lady who never even talks about straight sex. So I hate to fly in the face of all that is right and good -- no, actually, I love it -- but there was never any point in telling either of them. Besides my being unboyfriendable.

my coming out was totally bloodless. came out to close friends late 08, decided it wasn't really any sort of secret anymore by spring 09, came out to my immediate fam on my bday that june. still not really out to extended fam except for those who are on my facebook, but i'm sure word has gotten around some and i'm not worried about it either way. the real hurdle for me was coming out to myself, not anybody else

Am I the only one whose parents found out vs. voluntarily telling them? You see, when your father is a network security engineer, no amount of covering your online tracks will completely cover your online tracks. But looking back, it's pretty funny to think abt my mom tearfully asking me what a "bear" is with such genuine confusion.

Well I mean there was a "first time" when I was like 12 or 13 I guess? But the therapist told my parents I was probably just "curious" and they clung to that for a while. And so did I, sort of, coz I was going to this super-conservative Christian school and I told myself that I was sexually attracted to men but emotionally attracted to women (looooooooool). But I eventually grew out of this, and when my mom (well, dad) found shit on the computer again 5 years later it was like "oh, uh, sorry mom I'm gay".

Dad was and is totally cool with it, mom is as cool with it as she can be but only when we don't have to deal with it. She flipped out when we both worked at the same place 2 yrs ago and I wanted to tell my co-worker friends. She also is convinced that NO ONE in the family knows and that no one really needs to know, including my 16 year old brother (because it would "confuse" him).

But he already knows, i think, because he asked her once if I was gay and her response was "That's something you'll have to ask your brother"

Yeah my mom found my search engine history when I was 13 but it never came up again. :|
