cooking is hard!!! i pretty much can only make spaghetti, and then throw pieces of meat/fish onto the cast iron grill...

phil-two, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 04:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Vegetables are fail-proof. I don't know what to do with meat. I usually let other people cook it.

being employed has been thoroughly detrimental to my cooking

ya the composition of my meals is largely dependent upon what can be thrown together in 5 minutes before I run out the door (usually late anyway)

janice (surm), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 05:09 (thirteen years ago) link

that's the second set of refs to the exact same line in prufrock in this very thread. y'all are obsessed with eating peaches.

who are u people. cooking is one of the great pleasures of life.

how can you live alone and not cook

unless oyu can afford to eat out for every meal

I can't afford it, but I do it.

I don't even enjoy eating all that much.

i hate cooking so much - every step of the cooking process, from shopping for ingredients to putting them together, stresses me the fuck out. so much nervous breakdown-inducing effort and then the food's gone in 10 minutes and you're left with a pile of washing up! fuck that shit. i am more than happy to let people who enjoy it cook for me all the time. i actually found it quite liberating to admit this to myself a couple of years ago and then just stop ever trying to cook anything more time-consuming or complex than, like, pasta, or scrambled eggs.

maybe i'm just a true domestic gay but cooking is one of my favorite methods of relieving stress. get home from work, grab a knife and a cutting board, keeping my hands busy, focusing on the immediate task and letting the workday dissolve -- maybe a glass of wine or a puff, filling the kitchen with the smell of cooking, making it feel truly comforting sanctuary. the pleasure is in the process and the product is just the culmination.

however yes I enjoy eating out with others, so plz volunteer.

i'd really like to enjoy cooking, it would be beneficial to me in many ways i think, but i just can't. the penultimate time i cooked, i was living with a girl who was v much into baking, cooking &c; we had some friends over to dinner and she pretty much stood over me and made me do it (and also helped). the last time, it was literally just trying to make a pasta and vegetable bake with some veg that my flatmate had left in the fridge before going on holiday. it reduced me to a minor nervous breakdown, i ended up throwing it out of the window and ordering a pizza because i couldn't cope. that was when i swore never to cook again.

the reasons i hate it are pretty much

- i can't multitask. i have to concentrate on everything that's going on simultaneously otherwise i forget about it and things get burnt or explode. cue frazzle and stress
- i can't deal with ingredient shopping, particularly if there's something i only need a teaspoon of but know i won't use again. and because i never have ingredients in the house, i can't cook spontaneously
- i can't make recipes up as i go along. "just use something else!" aaargh fuck anyone giving me that advice. i have to know that the recipe is being followed to the letter otherwise i get stressed and worried
- and i never have the exact ingredients or the exact implements required for a recipe to work. EVER. always something missing, or something that won't fit
- i can't really chop or peel things, i sort of hack ham-fistedly away and am lucky if no blood ensues
- hatred of both washing up and leaving washing up to fester; pretty much every meal i make for myself is based on how little washing up there is to do at the end
- UGHHHHHH, basically.

details & time investment don't appeal to me either.

You've given up.

No kidding; why do you think I started writing film criticism?

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 13:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Because you didn't want to eat anymore.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 13:29 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd rather not make nice things just for myself, but cooking for two or more is fun. I usually just eat rice and beans.

yentl giant (corey), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 13:30 (thirteen years ago) link

genuine pity, i say

lene lovage (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 13:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i had so much more time and, more importantly, energy that i don't have now. then again, my work is pretty physically demanding.

elmo OTM all over the place. i was actually just talking about this with friends on friday: i find ingredient/food shopping WAY less stressful/more fun than clothes shopping

i usually can't balance wanting to see a movie after work with cooking for myself on weeknights, tho

eastern european pale skin dark hair small boobs wife (donna rouge), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 15:16 (thirteen years ago) link

look, either ya kno how to cook, or ya don't

me, put me in a kitchen with a frying pan and you'll come out with a calamity

janice (surm), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 15:17 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah tho i must admit that knife skills / a well-stocked pantry / an arsenal of cookware are all pretty crucial and take a little time to acquire but the end satisfaction is more than worth it

lene lovage (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 15:20 (thirteen years ago) link

plus -- it's chemistry! you turn stuff into other stuff! and then -- you eat it!

lene lovage (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 15:21 (thirteen years ago) link

i could stand some improvement in the knife skills dept, tbh

xp haha yes!

eastern european pale skin dark hair small boobs wife (donna rouge), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 15:23 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah but that's the thing elmo

it is chemistry

and not all of us are chemists ok

janice (surm), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 15:24 (thirteen years ago) link

I cook very simple things on weeknights: chicken breasts, couscous, pork chops, tossed salads, etc. Never mind the expense: if I ate canned food or ate out every night I'd look like Jabba.

Plus, it's fun to try and fail to cook an ambitious dish. I received no formal cooking instructions other than watching Mom and Dad for a couple of years and suddenly being left to my own devices upon moving out.

also ALSO i hate cooking cuz i'm impatient. i never think about food unless i'm hungry, in which case i want the food NOW.

i eagerly await elmo's feast.

elmo OTM about cooking being about the pleasure of process. My sister is in town this week and we made stir fry last night. So good.

Sorry to hear about the apartment. I just moved into a big ground floor place which used to be a spa - huge windows - and will now def be warier. People are dicks.

yeah, i'm on the 1st floor and i never suspected I'd want bars on my windows as much as i do right now

OK So in addition to my mom calling me in Philly yesterday and telling me that my room sort of flooded and that the carpet's soaking wet against and two feet extending from this one wall (where I had a ton of boxes stored), I come home and find that she took this GIANT pot of soup that I made out of the fridge to get something behind it, and just left it on the counter overnight. Was v time consuming and not cheap either, and I had gotten to eat a total of one (1) bowl of it.

Thanks, mom.
