this database reminds me of the "gang list" that our high school cop used to pass around. Was comprised mostly of entirely fictional gangs whose existence was gleaned from misreading graffitti

if a slur is posted on a message board, and no one understands what the fuck it's supposed to mean... is it still racist?

Hahah wait wait, two out of the three slang terms for "high and mighty whites" are SCOTTISH SURNAMES. Like, because the English treated them SO WELL, they just couldn't wait to put on English airs?

Re: "snob" - you'd think using a derogatory word which also has a much more common, but totally different derogatory meaning would be kinda counter-effective.

I think Norwegians tell these Finn jokes, where the main character is always called Pekka, because that's a very common first name here. But few Finnish people know about this, so if you'd shout "Pekka!" to a Finn, you'd most likely get no response, unless he is actually called Pekka.

That reminds me of this time I was in Mexico, visiting a friend and his family. I walked back to the apartment I was staying at, and their dog, Peluche, followed me home.
(Peluche is a term for a small fuzzy toy, something you'd get out of one of those crain machines.)
I get home and it's raining, and that damn dog wouldn't go back to his home. So I'm leaning out the window going "Peluche! Peluche!"
My friend comes down the street and puts his fingers to his lips to shush me. Turns out, peluche is also a term for a women's vagina, like "pussy" or "beaver".
So a gringo leaning out of a Mexican window calling out "Pussy!" to the neighborhood wasn't so great.

Dan, you need to see The Spook Who Sat By the Door. I saw it a screening of it with the director talking about the film before and after, a great guy who really got fucked over due to the fact that, back in the 70s, no film company would put out a movie about a black man inciting a race war and winning.

Hamilton = Indians = Rhyming slang in Scotland from a Scottish soccer team called Hamilton Academicals. This is shortened to Hamilton Accies (Akkies) a derogatory name for Indians.
Um, surely Hamilton Accies is rhyming slang for Pakis = Pakistanis.
― onimo, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:09 (sixteen years ago) link
Anyway that is one hueg and scary list, even if it is occasionally wrong.
― onimo, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:11 (sixteen years ago) link
Further on it points out (correctly) that in the UK Pakistanis and Indians (and anyone else from anywhere near the Indian sub continent tbh) are all lumped in together as "Pakis".
Paki = Indians = Short for Pakistani. Often not derogatory when used. In The UK many Indians and Pakistanis have been lumped under the same term. It's *much* more of a slur to Indians
This is apparently more insulting to Indians than Pakistanis, presumably because they hate Pakis :)

Othello = Blacks = Refers to black men who only date white women. Reference to the Shakespearean play of the same title about a black man named Othello married to a white woman.
