NW Tea Festival next weekend at Seattle Center. I went last year - $5 gets you a teacup and a big bag of freebies and all the tea you can sample.

The people-watching potential (bathroom lines + caffeine jitters) must be A+++.

As festivals go, it's pretty small scale - maybe 2 dozen vendors. This is such a coffee town, tea caffeine doesn't touch us.

aww, last year tea festival was the day we had brunch and i met kate and my couch came! trying to plan a hike for this weekend and options are not good :( miss seattle so much right now!

srsly these hikes are like the same elevation gain as my daily walks up qa hill :(

the latter isn't a sit-down place, but you can take pastries and go over to where they're tearing down the south park bridge and sit and eat and look at the river.

Joygoat: If you're in the mood for great soup at a good bar go to the Hopvine Pub, on 15th and Mercer.

Sandwiches: between noon and 4 only and only Tue-Fri, is Salumi, in Pioneer Square. Arrive early if you plan to eat early, but if you want to just wing it show up around 3. They'll be out of a lot of stuff but there won't be a line, and their leftovers are still good.

Chinese: Hing Loon on Weller and Maynard (near King St.) in the I.D. No atmosphere, great food.

I went to the Chef Bar and Restaurant on 23rd and Jackson the other night, got $9 of real fine Ethiopian food, me and the lady friend couldn't finish it. Katenga = amazing.

i had the lamb the other night there. maybe the best lamb i've ever had? of any cuisine? wow @ that much subtlety and complexity, and i ate leftovers twice more off it. what a place

I'd been thinking about Ethiopian anyway so that pretty much seals that.

And I'm hoping to get into town in time to hit Salumi, which I've only done once before. I want to pick up some guanciale and other stuff even if I don't eat there.

If you know what you want, call it in in the morning - they'll have it wrapped and waiting for you and you don't have to wait in the line. Just plow on past everyone and yell that you're there to pick up.

i went to seattle for the first time last week, i was only there 2 days, but I managed to eat 3 sandwiches from salumi

There are some other places around town that serve their meats - Grand Central Bakery for one. And DeLaurenti's in the market sells Salumi salami and finocciona in the deli. Really though, the seasonal sandwiches Salumi puts together are almost always excellent - goat cheese, fig spread, and proscuitto; the special harvest time only sausage with provolone and baked spiced apples; etc.

Rev - I'd swear you were at one of our parties where I had giant piles of 3 different meats from Salumi, when we were in the small loft on 1st Ave.

maybe? i think i only went to one party there. if i did, i don't remember, or at least you didn't hype your coldcuts that much.

We only had one party in that space - and were too shattered after that one to have another for over a year.

haven't been to maneki in SO DAMN LONG. god, i love that place. usually for sushi these day i go to umi, cuz it's decent and just across the street. and i like the spicy ginger tofu. so lazy i.
