Great, i've been wanting something to get into since watching all the Dexters and seasons of other stuff.

Thanks :)

See you on the BB thread.

I'm probably in the minority in that I really liked season 3. It bordered on absurd, which I quite enjoy.

Jeff, Sunday, 26 September 2010 22:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I just found the central antagonist/conflict in season 3 forced + inexplicable. (SPOILER especially as it required us to believe in the existence of someone psychopathic enough to have no problem with what Dexter does and want to learn how to do it himself (!!!) but who somehow kept out of trouble and led a successful political life before now)

Mordy, Sunday, 26 September 2010 22:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Hahaha Jimmy Smits, I forgot all about that character until your post. "Dexter, I want you to keep this on the down low, ok my friend? I am with you one hundred percent on ACTUALLY DOING JUSTICE, brother of mine! My wife you and I are making mango salsa together."

My wife thinks you and I

golfing, killing, fishing, killing...so OTT

I kind of loved it.

It was so goofy! I enjoyed it, though.

Smits was soooooo bad.

s3 was such a letdown after the previous two awesome seasons. pretty much all prado's fault too.

first episode of s5 the other night, so dark and depressing. esp when you recall e1 of s4 was all brady bunch family chuckles, with even the title sequence amended to reflect dexter's new homelife.

i try to avoid all the "this particular episode of this particular season was weak" that comes with watching tv shows week on week rather than the cohesive whole/boxsets thing (the mad men thread often becomes unreadable with people pointlessly banging on about this shite) but s5 looks set to be great. particularly loved the nods to six feet under in the funeral parlour scene - it's been a while since i watched SFU, was it the actual same funeral home? and did dexter really use the same david lines or am i misremembering? loved that bit anyway

disappointing premiere. although i was happy when he went bat shit on the dude in the shitter.

chrisv2010, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I liked the season 1 finale a lot - was worried Rudi would escape to become a recurring nemesis, but then the actual resolution was surprisingly affecting. Also enjoyed Dex's imaginary victory parade, and Debs chewing out that muscly cop who looks like an action figure.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:22 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought the premiere was a bit of a let-down, too. I really was sort of hoping they would just jump like 2 years into the future as Dex gets the killing urge again or something. But it appears that they are just going to deal with the fallout of the s4 finale all season. This show is at its best when it is funny.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Hopefully the fallout from the finale is contained as much as possible in this episode, because man was I bored by it. It's obvious Quinn will not actually expose Dexter, so why are they even bothering with this angle? I really was hoping he would sail away on that boat.

Nhex, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 21:43 (fourteen years ago) link

haha yeah same here.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 22:05 (fourteen years ago) link

was surprised by season one and thought the show had potential but subsequent seasons have generally disappointed me (if still generally entertained me). i thought lithgow was a good bad guy last season which helped and weirdly somehow deb has become the closest thing to a compelling non-dexter regular on the show (besides her and matsuka i really have no use for the other characters at all - less interesting the more they're given to do). show clearly has no larger plan behind it, i can't imagine whoever's running it now could tell you where/what the show will be in two years whereas w/ breaking bad, mad men and the wire, sopranos, deadwood before that you knew there was a definite roadmap in place.

I'm finding Dexter's sideburns in S2 very distracting.

chrisv2010, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 14:06 (fourteen years ago) link

in this season...oops.

And pretending to be a drug addict is a TERRIBLE plan.

Sorry, should probably stop liveblogging my several seasons behind viewing.

I find dexters overly pink lips distracting. always want to apply chapstick when I watch..

can't think of anything worse. i think the writers have handled it perfectly, the show has moved on in a big way from the old "one lolkill a week!" mode, returning to that after such a huge event would have made the show a silly pastiche of what it was. it's a welcome change to make it much less jokey and frivolous, more about him dealing with raw grief.

also this was predicted at the end of s3 (blood on wedding dress) so 'no larger plan' crit is kinda bs, esp after only seeing the opening episode of a show that generally takes a while to reveal that season's plot arc

NI, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:57 (fourteen years ago) link

is it posted on this thread that michael hall and jennifer carpenter are married.

chrisv2010, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:59 (fourteen years ago) link

new antagonist might work out pretty well this season imo - love the way he was quickly moved from "oh yawn another gf killing chump that dexter will chop up" to full on sinister uh oh

Mickey mouse "your mom is dead" scene was one of the greatest things this show has ever done

Mordy, Thursday, 7 October 2010 20:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I agree with the Mickey Mouse scene. So far the rest of this season has done nothing for me, though.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Thursday, 7 October 2010 21:06 (fourteen years ago) link

i find it kinda fascinating how much i enjoy deb now (although she is obv fucked up and crazy in lotsa ways) vs wishing she was offscreen for lots of the previous seasons.

also plz for the love of god cut out the goddamn la guerta/angel romance drama ugh. moments like those are the ones where i feel like the show has kinda lost its place a little - NO ONE is tuning into dexter to see if those two are going to make it work or for any quinn/deb relationship dealings and feelings.

also, am i the only one that thought that much of season 4 was spent establishing what a fucked up awful person rita is?

restorin' my damn eyes (jjjusten), Thursday, 7 October 2010 21:10 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah 'blood on the wedding dress' isn't exactly david simon level foreshadowing or plot building sorry.

balls, Thursday, 7 October 2010 22:11 (fourteen years ago) link

It's obvious Quinn will not actually expose Dexter, so why are they even bothering with this angle?

so that dexter has a good reason to kill him later in the season?

tehresa, Friday, 8 October 2010 00:10 (fourteen years ago) link

eh, it's not like they're even really bothering with that anymore - i mean, he killed that guy at the station being an incredible asshole, essentially

Nhex, Friday, 8 October 2010 01:35 (fourteen years ago) link

that annoyed me b/c harry was all "good job!"

ಠ_ಠ (bnw), Friday, 8 October 2010 02:44 (fourteen years ago) link

Quinn needs to die sooner rather than later. I hate the actor and character so much I want to leave the room every time he shows up on screen.

complaining that dexter isn't following the established lofty script traditions of the wire is kinda missing the point imo. dexter is basically a pulpy noiry soap opera, never saw it as aiming to make Serious Points. it's like moaning that a batman comic doesn't have the scope of war & peace.

tho when the wire borrows from dexter (mcnulty becomes a quasi-moiderer!) it becomes pretty much unwatchable.

NI, Monday, 11 October 2010 12:08 (fourteen years ago) link

the problem with Dexter is when it tries to deviate from pulpy noiry soap opera into serious drama.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Monday, 11 October 2010 17:14 (fourteen years ago) link

the show also totally lost its sense of humor somewhere along the way. going back and watching the first season, it strikes me how funny it was up until the end game in the last few episodes when suspense takes over.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Monday, 11 October 2010 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

tbf, it seems like in some ways they're trying to get back to that era... a lot more Dexter quips to the audience than we've gotten in a while, and this Julia Stiles thing could be fun/interesting, though I don't know where they're taking this. I expected her to be unintentionally hilarious when I heard that she was cast.

(still disappointed with the single-stroke kills, though!)

Nhex, Friday, 15 October 2010 08:08 (fourteen years ago) link

also i hope the kids stay gone, but i'm sure they'll come back. the nanny stuff already smells like a bad storyline

Nhex, Friday, 15 October 2010 08:08 (fourteen years ago) link

I finally saw season 4 of this and it was good but it also drove me bonkers. Dexter has *so* *many* chances to kill John Lithgow, and he didn't, and fucked up stuff kept happening to people as a result (murders, kid getting kidnapped, etc.). Additionally, in the past a lot of the people he killed escaped the law/fell through the system's cracks and that's why Dexter felt he had to step in and kill them. Here, everyone knew John Lithgow was the killer. I think it was 100% guaranteed that if the Miami police got him, he'd get convicted & get a sentence he deserved. Not only that, but the *hundreds* of families who lost loved ones because of this dude would love to see this guy caught and convicted. They all deserve the emotional release/closure of seeing the case solved, but they're all robbed of it because of Dexter. Only Dexter gets that release! In sum, he was being totally selfish and crazy all season. Also, I wish they'd get rid of imaginary Harry because he had really worn out his purpose as a foil.

I know Dexter kills people because he likes murdering, and the vigilante justice thing is a front to make it acceptable, but still, fuck!
