although i did love dexters reaction when lumen yelled "fuck you" at him.

I am always surprised by the hate for the Smits season from hardcore Dexter fans. I thought he was great, hilarious, and over the top in a good way. Loved the way he'd yell "Ellen WOLFE!" And he and Dexter's rooftop confrontation was awesome.

thirdalternative, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 19:19 (thirteen years ago) link

i think julia stiles sux. she conveys the same "inflection" in her voice whether she is upset, angry..

Agreed. Her acting in this season so far is pretty tone-deaf - almost as if she's playing the Kristen Wiig parody version of her character.

Stockhausen's Helicopter Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 20:12 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah she's not good. unfortunately, she's not hamming it up enough to be amusing, either, which is the way to go on Dexter.

Nhex, Thursday, 4 November 2010 09:03 (thirteen years ago) link

just really boring this season.

Str8 Drapin It (chrisv2010), Thursday, 4 November 2010 13:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I just watched this week's episode - not amazing, but at least entertaining in a traditional Dexter action episode. Matsuka had a great moment.

Nhex, Thursday, 4 November 2010 22:37 (thirteen years ago) link

lol'd hard at: "He doesn't need Saint Bridget. He has Father Dexter."

Mordy, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 23:00 (thirteen years ago) link

"shit a brick and fuck me with it."

these words were actually spoken. oh, deb.

tehresa, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 13:36 (thirteen years ago) link

the dialogue in this show is really so bad it's good

Mordy, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 13:54 (thirteen years ago) link

why do they keep doing dexter and a buddy seasons...CUT THE SHIT ALREADY.

Str8 Drapin It (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 14:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I have to admit I'm a LOT more amused by their romantic screwball team-up than everything Smits. Now that things are happening again in the show it's a lot more tolerable.

Nhex, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 23:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Objectively, I don't feel like this show has gotten a lot worse, but the more I watch of this season the more I hate all of it retroactively. I am even turning on characters I once liked, like Deb. It's like I got so pissed at how shitty season four was that it poisoned the whole Dexter universe for me.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 23:42 (thirteen years ago) link

baffled, confused and annoyed by the way the writers made laguerta into a sympathetic character then all of a sudden she becomes an incompetent corrupt hateful dick. and convinces the up-and-coming hispanic female cop to join her in her scheme to screw over deb. feels weird, racist and sexist all in one.

NI, Thursday, 18 November 2010 10:38 (thirteen years ago) link

i think the scheme was less about screwing over deb and more about saving her own ass.

tehresa, Thursday, 18 November 2010 23:47 (thirteen years ago) link

But it's still a weird turnaround for LaGuerta's character... especially after all the season 3 time spent with her and the defense attorney.

Stockhausen's Helicopter Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 19 November 2010 00:03 (thirteen years ago) link

deb is all time most hated for me. awful actress and awful writing.

predict lumen kills robocop and has to flee the state, taking the heat off dexter. I hope she gets killed though.

reckon you should stfu (bnw), Friday, 19 November 2010 00:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i stopped watching this a few weeks back - should i bother catching up or just leave it be?

yeah i dont care for deb either.

Really fucked up. Kinda pretty too.

Mordy, Monday, 6 December 2010 22:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Anyone catch the Dylan reference ("I'll Keep It With Mine") in the season closer last night?

Not as explosive as last year's, but I was satisfied.

thirdalternative, Monday, 13 December 2010 17:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Enjoyed it, but it all seemed to be rapped up pretty quickly.
Would've preferred 90 min episode?

not_goodwin, Monday, 13 December 2010 21:19 (thirteen years ago) link

i thought it was kind of a let down after all the build up. no twist at the end! boo.

tehresa, Monday, 13 December 2010 23:52 (thirteen years ago) link

wiki says 'as of december 2, 2010 the show has been renewed for a sixth season' so it almost seems like this might have been a series finale episode at first? which makes sense since it was all 'here's what happens to every character on the show' for the last 5 min. happy couples and children everywhere!

Michael C. Hall on Pinfield's radio show, talking about seeing Monster Magnet in NYC in the '90s and more...

my favorite part was when lumen was all like "I'm so sorry dexter but my contract is up so now I have to go"

OTM. I'm taking the "here's what happens to every character on the show for the last 5 min. happy couples and children everywhere" as the show's finale and am jumping off. I'm annoyed that the all the elements of this season that I found interesting: the santaria-inspired occult murders and Peter Weller's sleazy cop were basically ignored or dispatched conveniently away.

And perhaps inspired by season 5's suckitude: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter file for divorce

i never watched the show before this season and i loved it a lot fwiw

aka the pope (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 01:48 (thirteen years ago) link

there was a lot of bad writing in this season but i wouldnt go as far to call the whole thing 'terrible'. definitely picked up towards the end but i can't help feeling the writers just got damn lazy this time round.

things like the whole 'laguerta bad guy.. now good guy.. back to bad guy' lame subplot. not even in a 'this is how human life actually is' way, it was real black & white good/bad that got confusing and annoying as the series went on. dexter isn't very good at portraying shades of gray anyway.

other things from last night: that 'i'll keep it with mine' line stuck out a mile, i took it as a nico reference, what's the bob dylan thing?

dexter's car crash was unnecessary. needless tv schlock. also why didn't his sister spot his crashed car, and how did he manage to sort it out in less than an hour? the writers are really pushing it with convenient plot devices like that hanging butcher's curtain separating dexter and his sis. my heart sinks every time they resort to this, and they did it a LOT this time round.

don't want to grumble too much, i did enjoy the season overall but the writers need a kick up the arse. not quite as good as s4 but at least it topped that bloody awful jimmy smits series.

NI, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 09:45 (thirteen years ago) link

@NI, Bob Dylan wrote and recorded I'll Keep It With Mine, Nico covered it. Though Dylan's version wasn't released until '85 or so.

hopefully next season will get dexter without a "buddy".

NI, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 16:55 (thirteen years ago) link

should be some nice tense scenes with his sister wife ex next season?

not_goodwin, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 17:26 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe he'll kill her. i cant stand her.

I still found this season more enjoyable than the third one, and it did start to get a little more exciting, at least, in the second half. I was definitely surprised how upbeat the end generally was, even with Dexter losing Lumen. The show's in no danger of cancellation, from what I understand, the overall ratings this season have been the show's highest.

I guess be careful what you wish for; I was hoping for a return to the darker Dexter of the first couple of seasons, and this season was undoubtedly grim - even to the point where I was getting really tired of all the rape and torture down the stretch - but it really didn't do it for me, particularly because they've just gone in the direction that Dexter is completely justified to kill these monsters who are way worse than him.

seven months pass...

OK, finally watching Season 5 (and avoiding reading anything above this for now). The scene where Dexter has posed a man in plastic wrap next to a guy who was shot and Masuka gives his interpretation of events as it flips to Dexter's voiceover is some of the funniest shit in the series, even if this season is lacking a little

mh, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 01:16 (twelve years ago) link

I liked that that too, but the idea that the department would take Masuka's off the cuff analysis as a given and not investigate was a little too much suspension of disbelief, even for Dexter.

nickn, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 04:17 (twelve years ago) link

I couldn't get through season 2. Michael C Hall is great, but the stories were kind of stupid and I didn't care for any of the supporting characters.

I just finished watching this. Although it still had some of my favourite things about Dexter (like the campy Masuka stuff, Deb, grotesque baddies) they are getting so sloppy. Dexter used to have his code and it p much made sure he wouldn't get caught and now he's whacking ppl left and right, like the gas station guy, leaving evidence everywhere, taking Lumen to clean up that attic so she can drop hair everywhere; no-one in the police questions or looks into anything - all of that was at least attempted to be taken care of or explained in the earlier seasons. Sticking to the code was the one thing that provided any kind of suspense over whether he'd be caught, if he can just casually kill someone and hurry away whenever he feels like it then there's zero suspense.

And yeah that car crash was the biggest shark-jump moment ever. AND yeah he's still terrible at the basic human stuff he was meant to have learned at the start of s1 like even HUGGING HIS KIDS when telling them their mum had died. I hate that they can't get it straight as to when he's meant to be good at this stuff. And is the Kyle Butler stuff gonna come back? Quinn was pretty close with that photo & the kid.

Anyway there's a s6 trailer on the Showtime site, looks like the same old silly nonsense but with maybe a new blonde.

Sooo, I downloaded the episodes from this season.

A few loose ends, but I think it's fairly promising. Mos Def's character is pretty good, the casting for the serial killers is good but there hasn't been a ton of development yet, and wtf @ Masuka's intern.

mh, Monday, 31 October 2011 00:13 (twelve years ago) link

haven't seen last night's yet but i thought the first few sucked and then the last 2 weeks things started to pick up and head in a more interesting direction.

tehresa, Monday, 31 October 2011 23:35 (twelve years ago) link

I made the mistake of going on the AV threads for the last few episodes and HO BOY it looks like there is one massive SMDH RMDE sharkjump (possibly) in store. I don't want to spoiler it here though.
The writing has really gone to shit in this show though, and they've become just gobsmackingly lazy with when Dex is supposed to be intuitive to other people's behaviour or completely aspie. Mos Def best thing about this season so far (and CHanks makes me chuckle whenever he's on screen).

kinder, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:54 (twelve years ago) link

Pretty much my take on it, too. There's not much depth going on to the characters and the departures that were entertaining to me because they seemed out of place in previous seasons and actually funny are just being thrown in. Quinn going wild and Angel kind of tagging along?

mh, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 13:26 (twelve years ago) link

haven't seen this or six feet under - they both look crap - but the guy is good in gamer
