I'm sorry I missed you guys last night! My new work schedule is killing me. Higgs made a valiant effort but I managed to sleep all day. And all of the night!

Seattle people (or those wanting to move here, though I don't think moving expenses are covered) - I need to hire two software testers (possibly SDET but not necessarily). Agile familiarity a plus; a+++ if familiar with the power industry (generation/transmission/distribution) or pipeline distribution or other large scale scada type stuff. My ilxmail doesn't work, send to isthatpie✧✧✧@ya✧✧✧.c✧✧ instead.

Living in Pioneer Square was weird, but I loved being so close to King Street Station. So simple to catch bus/lt rail to anywhere.

I can't believe this, but I confused ivy and daisy in my previous post! Clearly ivy is in better, more responsible hands with jaq , bless her.

i'll say, before tehresa took her in she had awful thin drizzly hair and she had to live on a stoop.

Another (allegedly) mentally ill murder-suicide involved in all of it today. The Kyle huff thing from 6 years ago came to mind.Hope there is a benefit for the family & friends of the victims. Too numb to say more.

there's a motion to get as many people on Friday to attend music shows as possible, given that some of the victims were local performing musicians. I like this idea a lot for many obvious reasons. Also, you'll be able to buy vodka at midnight at certain supermarkets. yay?

so, i spent the past week in seattle and faced heavy pressure from my extended family to move there. i kind of want to. it was beautiful weather. i went to the park every day. the lake glittered! but i hate driving! and traffic! should i do it??? i'm in an active job search, so maybe i should just look for jobs in seattle? i'm very torn. pros, cons, etc?
― rayuela, Monday, 30 July 2012 15:45 (eleven years ago) link
Take public transit, esp if you live/work where you can take the light rail. Or, live where you can walk to work.
― Jaq, Monday, 30 July 2012 16:49 (eleven years ago) link
We need an FAQ for the thread title question. In brief: the weather is more often cooler, grey, and drizzly but that doesn't detract from the beauty. Summer is a perfectly deceptive time to visit. Still, I love it here year-round except for November. If you live & work in Seattle proper, public transit is easy. (there's a major King County Metro change coming in September, including RapidTransit & removing downtown Ride Free Zone. Hopefully it will be awesome) If you live or work outside Seattle, public transit can be trickier. It just depends.

yeah, i'll look over the rest of the thread in a more leisurely fashion later. thanks for the responses!
― rayuela, Monday, 30 July 2012 19:05 (eleven years ago) link
I live a mile from my job and walk every day, it's not hard to do.
― kate78, Monday, 30 July 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link
pros: it's a great city all the way around. some of it's world-class already, the rest is under construction. (the five or so of us that still post are all serious SEA boosters, so ask away as your questions become more specific)cons: weather blah blah blah boring blah blah
lots of neighborhoods you can live in and not need a car. coincidentally they're the best neighborhoods in town (capitol hill, lower queen anne, belltown, fremont, wallingford, columbia city and 5ish more).

As an area native, I have to give the obligatory "Boooooo, you aren't wanted here. Go back to California. Damn outlanders ruining everything." *goes back to my hut made of moss and flannel*
― The Reverend, Monday, 30 July 2012 23:38 (eleven years ago) link
pros: not many weather extremes, rarely humid, few mosquitoes/fleas, things like to grow here, moss is awesomecons: really rotten when it snows/icespros: Seattle public library/King county public library, lots of independent bookstores still, Fantagraphics is here, SIFF and SIFF Cinema and NWFF show cool obscure movies, still lots of old classic movie theaters around that retain some original decor from the 20s, farmers markets all over the placecons: .... parking maybe?pros: casual dress pretty much everywherecons: if you dress up a little for work, people think you are going on an interview
― Jaq, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 04:56 (eleven years ago) link
the parking is really atrocious, you have to admit.
― Clay, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 05:51 (eleven years ago) link
Parking in Seattle is a breeze compared to parking in San Francisco or New York -- or any part of Los Angeles where you have to street-park, for that matter.
That said, I've been without a car for my 9 out of the 11 years I've been here. I can count on one hand the number of times per year I really wish I had a car... like pick up furniture, go to a friend's house in a remote suburb, or do a quick drive to Snoqualmie Falls and back. And that was it. And there are Zipcar options in case any of the above come up.
(Reading back at the thread, the election of 2007 was a pretty contentious one for Seattlexors. Holy shit. I would just read backwards until 2008 or so. So much has changed since then anyway.)
― ma ck ro ma ck ro (mackro mackro), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 06:02 (eleven years ago) link
yeah, part of what is contributing to my indecision is that whenever i've gone to seattle, i've stayed with my family in the burbs, so i actually have no idea what it's like to be in seattle itself, except for quick day trips. but i'm in kind of a transitional stage right now and it was so pretty when i was there that when my grandma tells me for the 10 millionth time to move to seattle, i want to say yes! i'm coming! even though i don't really know anyone there cept for family.
(parking won't be a problem since i plan to rely on public transport if i move here/there)
but thanks everyone for the pros/cons!!
― rayuela, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 14:49 (eleven years ago) link
(my family moved there after i left home, so even though it is now where i go when i go "home", i never lived there)
