Hmm. Turning off Push in settings seems to save a lot of battery life, even though nothing I was using supported it.

anyone else marvelling at that apology from apple over me.com, then? can't post it here now -- posting this from the iPhone -- but is basically hand-wringing "we made a dick of it, lads" stuff ... and them saying they're not going to use the terminology "push" until it's a proper instant push service.
didn't realise they'd come in for so much flak about it.

We have recently completed the transition from .Mac to MobileMe. Unfortunately, it was a lot rockier than we had hoped.
Although core services such as Mail, iDisk, Sync, Back to My Mac, and Gallery went relatively smoothly, the new MobileMe web applications had lots of problems initially. Fortunately we have worked through those problems and the web apps are now up and running.
Another snag we have run into is our use of the word "push" in describing everything under the MobileMe umbrella. While all email, contact or calendar changes on the iPhone and the web apps are immediately synced to and from the MobileMe "cloud," changes made on a PC or Mac take up to 15 minutes to sync with the cloud and your other devices. So even though things are indeed instantly pushed to and from your iPhone and the web apps today, we are going to stop using the word "push" until it is near-instant on PCs and Macs, too.
We want to apologize to our loyal customers and express our appreciation for their patience by giving all current subscribers an automatic 30-day extension to their MobileMe subscription free of charge. Your extension will be reflected in your account settings within the next few weeks.
We hope you enjoy your new suite of web applications at me.com, in addition to keeping your iPhone and iPod touch wirelessly in sync with these new web applications and your Mac or PC.
Thank you, The MobileMe Team

Peculiar. But good to know.

which apps would use this "push" other than mail and ical? if i am sync'ing using mobileme should i just keep "push" off?
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 22:37 (fifteen years ago) link
i'm keeping it off. i fucking loathe the idea of things being "pushed" at me [1]. i will check my e-mail when i want to, thank you.
[1] yes, OK, texts excepted.

not that i get many e-mails like that either, but you get the idea.

Aurora Feint is pretty great!

daaaamn. i just DO NOT HAVE THE TIME. but that's the kind of thing that could theoretically get me back into gaming.
― grimly fiendish, Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:06 (fifteen years ago) link
pandora works great over edge because it's streaming at 56kbps mono. sounds better than you'd imagine though.
― toby, Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:51 (fifteen years ago) link
i wonder how many "free" apps will start charging? apparantly shazam will, and pandora will have audio ads.

― czn, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:12 (fifteen years ago) link
www.fring.com (which I can't access at work to check if it's on app store, yet)
if so, tht must def be a killer app
― czn, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:16 (fifteen years ago) link
it runs in the background too; not sure how they manage that... the home button only hides the app so you have to properly shut it down to exit it

is there a video recorded yet?

recorder*
fring appears to be jailbreak only from that webpage, which explains how it runs in the background.

new Facebook app
This updates brings the features you've been asking for: you can now write on your friends' walls, view their photo albums, and see their full profiles. Photo browsing is more fun now with the addition of photo tags - just hold your finger down on a photo to make them appear. Photo uploading is also much faster, and you can finally upload pictures from your library that you've previously taken. Dozens of bug fixes have also been fixed, improving stability greatly.

there should be a master list of apps where the mobile version of the webpage is better!

is there an app for browsing flickr groups? as far as I'm aware m.flickr.com doesn't allow this
― czn, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:29 (fifteen years ago) link
there is an app called Mobile Flickr which is not actually made by flickr that lets you search on flickr groups. its a pretty good app except that it posts the photos you upload upside down.

someone should make an app called KITCHEN SYNC. i don't know what it does. grocery lists? keeps track of what's in your fridge?
― s1ocki, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:18 (fifteen years ago) link
hey, can you re-arrange icons and move em around and stuff?
― s1ocki, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:29 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah, press and hold on one of the icons and the screen will go all wobbly, you can then move the icons around
KITCHEN SYNC pushes details of what's in your fridge and store cupboard up to the cloud and effortlessly syncs ON IPHONE so you never run out of olive oil

what's instapooper?
― s1ocki, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:55 (fifteen years ago) link
instapaper is great, it lets you save web pages when you're browsing on your home computer so you can read them offline on iphone
most of the clutter is on page 2, I like page 1 nice and neat
― czn, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:56 (fifteen years ago) link
instapaper = fuckn' awesome.
― grimly fiendish, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:59 (fifteen years ago) link
yes - although not so good for pages requiring a login (where it doesn't work).

the apps store will give you the Koran for free and you can add different translations for a fee
I think this is awesome

why would you ever need to read anything offline? For the subway?
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:23 (fifteen years ago) link
dressing rooms, tour bus when out of range, airplanes - I spend about half my life in these places

plus it's good for downloading image heavy/bigger pages when in wifi range for reading on the go (esp on iphone 2G) given mobilesafari has no cached browsing and edge is dog slow
