Why on earth are you so interested in defending a dude who screams out about lynching and repeats the word "nigger" over and over again on stage, causing the entire audience to walk out?

I don't want to defend him, I don't even like him. I just don't want to call him a racist without knowing more. He did X, therefore he is Y and all Y are Z. Isn't that the same sort of thinking that led to lynchings in the first place?

The tape makes him look pretty guilty, but when I watched it appeared to me that the reaction was so outlandish something must have provoked it. I don't know what, but I noticed nobody's came up with any plausible motive for his behaviour except that he's a barely constrained dyed-in-the-wool racist who just had to see a black man to be tipped over the edge.

Perhaps that's true, but do you manage to hide it on stage every night for all these years?

I'm not saying behavior and motivation are always inexorably linked, but are you suggesting that they never are?

Of course not. I'm just saying I'm bothered by the confidence with which people are ascribing motivation in this scenario.

Dudes, if there are any 'extenuating circumstances' that couuld POSSIBLY acquit Michael Richards I'm sure they'll come out at some point. So far though anyone saying he's not racist is doing some serious reaching.

Who tf cares what his motivation is? It's indifferent to me what flavor of racist he is, from common, garden variety clay-footed mere mortal to genocidal manaic. In this case, his behavior alone is contemptible and fatuous.

The only reason I care(d) is because his motivation might not have been racist. That's why the WHY matters, because without even wondering about it you're saying "screaming nigger means you're a racist, no ifs or buts". Perhaps that's true. Fair enough, if so. you can have any emotional response you like and as a fucking sociopath i'm sure you will but you can't pretend there's any context in which cracker is a deeply bigoted and offensive term without being either disengenous or ignorant. ilxor's get emotional when someone says 'golden grahams' to them so the cracker precedent's been set. just don't pretend it's something it's not.

like i said, he's kind of a lousy comic. i still judge his rant in the context of a comedy club setting though. people often go to comedy clubs to be mock-offended/shocked. and plenty of people walk out of comedy clubs when they think an act sucks or is genuinely offensive. and obviously a lot of comedy is based on saying things that you aren't supoposed to say/wouldn't say out loud. kramer just blows at it.
