When it first came out everyone I knew who got one used it for about a month then relegated it to watching-movies-in-bed status. Probably more an early adopter curse than anything else.

Kind of funny I posted that today. I transferred some music to my iPad that I didn't move anywhere else so I'm using it as an oversized iPod right now

mh, Thursday, 3 March 2011 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

watching movies/reading books/surfing the web in bed/on plane is prob 95% of ipad usage atm - im sure thatll change as the platform matures/industry shifts tho

ice cr?m, Thursday, 3 March 2011 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

The iPad would be more useful if I spent a lot of time on the subway/bus, or if I could justify the 3G subscription cost. But my iPhone will do 85% of the iPad's tasks (directions, Safari, time-wasting games) and for most tasks the iPhone can't do I'd rather have a real keyboard, etc..

It makes it kind of outsized, but I got the iPad case from incase that is a carrier for an iPad, the Apple bluetooth keyboard, charger, etc. and it comes with a pretty nice little stand. I've used it as an easy laptop replacement, and I have the camera connection kit so it's pretty sweet to use for a quick photo review session

mh, Thursday, 3 March 2011 20:02 (thirteen years ago) link

so i am having the hardest time deciding between the 3G and wifi. I commute by subway (underground, so neither service would work then) in NYC... so I'm sure I could find WiFi spots around if I got that option, but I'm not sure how convient it is.
anyone with an ipad have issues with just the wifi? wish they got 3G? vice versa? etc etc?
what about you guys getting the ipad 2 - wifi or 3G?

juicebox, Thursday, 3 March 2011 21:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I think wifi + boingo is a pretty decent option.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 3 March 2011 21:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I gave a 3G and used the 3G all the time when I had a commute. Now I have no commute and I never use the 3G.

Alba, Thursday, 3 March 2011 21:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Gave = have = evidence I have an iPad

Alba, Thursday, 3 March 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll prob just get wifi. If I want 3G on it, I'll just upgrade my phone plan for the hotspot/tethering feature.

Jeff, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:00 (thirteen years ago) link

If you have a phone that will act as a wi-fi hotspot (e.g. the iphone 4 in a few days, if you're in the US and on AT&T) you could probably manage with a wi-fi ipad, although you wouldn't get GPS.

argh xp

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link

what is boingo? link?
also, the hotspot was a decent option i was considering. I have an android phone until i can upgrade in december to IPHONE5OMG, but i just was curious if people used 3g all the time. wifi seems to make more (economical) sense

juicebox, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:04 (thirteen years ago) link

boingo is a 10 bucks a month pass to a pretty wide spectrum of hotspots worldwide. (goboingo.com I think)

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:06 (thirteen years ago) link

nice, I'll check that out. Thanks!

juicebox, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:07 (thirteen years ago) link

boingo is the devil

ice cr?m, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Just had a look at an Apple video showing people using this thing. It really does look quite spectacularly thin. If loads of these things snap in half on day one I will lol.

3G has been super handy when I don't have usual broadband. I got mine on Orange though, which has way better coverage than the O2 of my iPhone.

I think it would have jsut been an expensive toy until I started taking it to work, where it replaced a giant binder full of paper. It's much better to take to meetings etc -- you can take notes where a laptop ins't really acceptable. It's good for quick demos of stuff as well.

Got a lot less useful when MacBook Air 11" came along tho, which beats it at just about everything else thanks to its novel concept of "windows" which allows it to do more than one thing at once.

stet, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah. If you want a computer an ipad is all but useless to you. I think loads of people think an ipad will replace their laptop, and then they spend about three months trying to shoehorn everything they do into a chunk of glass without a keyboard or USB ports.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:39 (thirteen years ago) link

can you sync photos from computer to ipod/iphone without iphoto?

el tuomboto (cozen), Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Don't think so. Apparently there's an SD card adapter coming that lets you suck photos off the card into the ipad but I dunno who'd use that in the real world.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Um, you can set a directory to sync, and iTunes also works with Aperture, and on Windows there's obviously no iPhoto to sync with.

The SD card adapter (which also comes with a USB adapter) came out in May 2010. I mentioned having one a few posts back. It's handy.

mh, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:50 (thirteen years ago) link

ah sorry yes, I misread your question cozen.

last year Apple didn’t yet understand the iPad. They knew it was good. They knew it had potential. But they didn’t know what it was.

fucking figures as i just bought the original a month ago.

poops, people have been able to return and/or get $100 off newly purchased ipad 1s by going into the apple store.. officially you can return or get the discount within 14 days but some stores are letting people do it within 30. worth a try!

How have I only just discovered that swiping up or down on any of the IPad home screens brings up the search box??

Alba, Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Bloody hell, it works on the iPhone too.

Alba, Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Wait, what?

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:16 (thirteen years ago) link

right, so should I get an iPhone today, because my 3G is so slow and unstable that I am going to lose my mind. I read the rumors about iPhone5, and I don't know what to do.

Super Cub, Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:17 (thirteen years ago) link

The 4's pretty good. The 5 will most likely be out in June/July but honestly it'll probably just be a speed bump.

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:18 (thirteen years ago) link

What makes you say that?

Alba, Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:21 (thirteen years ago) link

I read a rumor today saying the 5 might be delayed until september. The speed bump is maybe important to me, because my 3G is so freaking slow now. Like half of the apps out there don't even run on the phone. They are unworkably slow or crash.

Super Cub, Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Maybe get a 4 on an 18 month contract, if that's available? That way when it runs out you'll probably be back more in sync with the release cycle.

Alba, Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Apple rumours are ridiculous, safe to ignore 99% of them. Apple's iphone cycle is June/July.

Alba: There'll be a new enticing factor but it's unlikely (obv I don't know for sure) that there'll be a new design until next year. It's selling well, many people have two-year contracts and public attention's on the new ipad.

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Up = right, down = left, swipe-wise. On the home screens. Bleeple bloop.

Agreed. If there will be any change to the iPhone this year, it'll probably only be a change to the A5 processor. Design/features won't change much (if at all)

Alba, Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:42 (thirteen years ago) link

dude I know at foxconn is waiting specifically till next release to get an iphone.
this could mean absolutely nothing because he also waited till last xmas to get a PSP.

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, I've been a fool. It was only working because I was on the first home screen, where I could have just swiped left to the search box anyway. Sorry guys. Still - it SHOULD do that. Fantasy over.

That's all fine, except ... you could have said exactly the same last year. More so, in fact, as the iPad really was a new thing then.

Alba, Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:49 (thirteen years ago) link

If he works at Foxconn he's probably a massive geek so.

When I swipe up on my iphone home screen nothing happens. Spotlight is left all the way + 1.

btw chasing Apple rumours is exactly like looking up medical conditions, it's all inappropriate/misleading and before you know it the next ipod is a 3D hologram due in mid-April and you have 12 types of cancer.

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i thought steve only had one type?

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Indeed, although these days in the month or so before release you often get pretty solid leaks these days.

True. Yesterday Gruber pointed out that Apple wasn't really sure what the ipad was for in its first year (same with the iphone to an extent; remember it didn't even have an app store in the first year). I think that's why this year's revision is so enormous.

I still think the iphone 5 will be a reasonable jump from the iphone 4, but in the same way the 3GS was a jump from the 3G, i.e. processing bumps but not LTE or a massive case revamp or anything. I'm guessing like everyone else but I'm basing it on past form. Also, the iphone 4 is really really fantastic in a way that the 3G wasn't.

xp and yeah, leaks.

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 March 2011 00:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Huh. Now it seems both up and down = left. How embarrassing!

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 5 March 2011 01:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I should elaborate on that. Okay, the iphone 3G was always a sluggish piece of crap. On v2 of the OS it was all right, but there were memory leak issues with the keyboard, crashes galore, you couldn't play music and do anything else at the same time etc etc. It just wasn't terribly responsive or reliable. The iphone 4 is by contrast an incredibly zippy and fluid piece of kit.

I'm sure iOS 5 will turn the iphone 4 upside down with proper multitasking or some such but right now it's fine.

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 March 2011 01:02 (thirteen years ago) link

strange how the iphone 1 (now forgotten, RIP) was such a leap fwd in many respects yet still so backwards in many others (no C&P lol)
