The GPS abilities these apps have now is scary, as I've seen on my iPod touch - I guess Google is using the IP or something

Nhex, Thursday, 10 March 2011 12:36 (thirteen years ago) link

You mean the non-GPS abilities? Touches and non-3G iPads use triangulation from known wifi hotspots in place of GPS.

Alba, Thursday, 10 March 2011 12:41 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not just the Touch stuff, I've seen other websites use the same Google maps triangulation too from my home computer

Has the location security settings moved to a more prominent place in 4.3 or am I just imagining it. I'm glad I did because now the Angry Birds won't know where I've hidden their eggs. (serious wtf does angry birds need to know my location for?)

I let all apps know my location. It's wonderful and magical.

It did move though, yeah. Full breakdown here (ilounge does these really well, always worth checking in with them when there's a new firmware): http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/instant-expert-secrets-features-of-ios-4.3/

is there any news about uk ipad pricing? or when that will be announced?

caek, Thursday, 10 March 2011 23:02 (thirteen years ago) link

International prices are unknown atm. Given your weak pound they'll probably be more expensive than the last ones.

i just got my hands on a mid 2007 aluminum body imac. its got 1gb RAM and i want to upgrade; is the difference between 4GB (which would mean buying 2x2GB) and 3GB (which would mean buying a single 2GB to slot next to the current 1GB) significant enough to be worth the extra $40?

max, Friday, 11 March 2011 15:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I think more ram is always worth it and I wouldn't work with less than 4 these days.

dan selzer, Friday, 11 March 2011 16:01 (thirteen years ago) link

my old sysadmin's advice still holds, i think - "RAM is like money, you can't have too much"

well... you can, but the system disparity has to be so great that you wouldn't even consider getting to that point in the first place (like say, a Pentium III with 64GB of RAM)

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Friday, 11 March 2011 16:16 (thirteen years ago) link

how would you even fit 64 GB of RAM onto a PIII motherboard, DJP

that's what SHE said

I have a 24' late 2007 iMac myself, and I got the 4GB upgrade when I purchased it. Unless you're going to junk it in a year or so, I'd say it's worth the extra $15-30 for that 1GB - look around, you can find ~$60 for 2x2GB PC2-5300 SODIMMs, look for laptop memory. I often hit the 4GB ceiling now (though I'm often running 10 apps at once), so I'd say it's worth it.

why didnt anyone tell me the interface for ipad reeder was boring as fuck before i dropped 5 big ones on it?

throwing darts and eating pizza behind impenetrable walls (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 16:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Boring but effective.

Jeff, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 16:33 (thirteen years ago) link

say what? Reeder has justified buying an ipad singlehandedly. Can't fucking wait for the mac app store version to come out - so fed up with netnews reader

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

when you finally drill into yr feeds it's great, but this main screen is just awful

throwing darts and eating pizza behind impenetrable walls (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 16:54 (thirteen years ago) link

baaderonixx the Mac beta is now stable enough to use every day. Still can't manage feeds though :(

stet, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 17:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I stopped using Mac beta Reeder, but love it on my iPhone. Find I use google reader on mac out of habit, and was annoyed by not being able to manage feeds, and constantly being asked to redownload it.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

bbbbut PS3.... has no games
xps

cozen, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link

I agree the main screen is boring, but I don't have any immediate suggestions how they could make it as useful as the iPhone version's opening without another similar screen-wasting thing.

I'm really getting into using Flipboard more, lately.

mh, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

they could make the main screen highlights from yr favorite feeds, like the opening screen for google reader

just woke up (lukas), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Reeder is great and not boring, although afaict there's no way to reorder your feeds alphabetically. The Mac version keeps crashing (yes even on the newest beta).

Emperor Tomato Catsuuuuuuuup (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:41 (thirteen years ago) link

i would like at least an OPTION to show a list of my subscribed feeds

throwing darts and eating pizza behind impenetrable walls (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 20:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Best rival to Flipboard I've seen is Zite, which is free.

Alba, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 21:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I've not used the ipad version of Reeder but the iphone version lists all your feeds. There must be a way to do that in the ipad version, surely.

Emperor Tomato Catsuuuuuuuup (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 21:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Looks like there isn't. What the eff are they thinking?

Emperor Tomato Catsuuuuuuuup (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think he means "a feed with all your sources in one" - he means a list of the names of all feeds that you subscribe to. You can't get that on the iPhone version either, as far as I can see.

Alba, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 22:06 (thirteen years ago) link

You can definitely do that on the iphone app.

Emperor Tomato Catsuuuuuuuup (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link

argh I wish there were an easy way to upload iphone screen caps.

Emperor Tomato Catsuuuuuuuup (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link

You can't get it in Byline either. I don't think it ever occurred to me, as I do my management of actual sources in Google Reader itself.

Alba, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 22:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Off the Reeder site:

http://reederapp.com/2/_index/screens/7.png

Tapping that three-line icon at the bottom displays all your feeds, not just new items.

Emperor Tomato Catsuuuuuuuup (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Show me where you can do it in the iPhone app cause I can't see it. The closest I can get to it is to go to Reeder's settings, then under Navigation set it to "Open folders as list of feeds". Then if you go to a folder you can see all the feeds the belong to that folder, but I can't see a way of getting a list of all your feeds at once. I guess you could make a folder that just had everything in it and that would work.

xpost - ah, do you not use folders in Google Reader? Looks like if you don't then everything gets listed in that way.

Alba, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah yeah, I don't use folders.

Emperor Tomato Catsuuuuuuuup (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 22:17 (thirteen years ago) link

This is the way that screen looks on mine:
