fring appears to be jailbreak only from that webpage, which explains how it runs in the background.

Newe version of NYTimes app is out, handles syncing properly (but still takes its time about it)

new Facebook app
This updates brings the features you've been asking for: you can now write on your friends' walls, view their photo albums, and see their full profiles. Photo browsing is more fun now with the addition of photo tags - just hold your finger down on a photo to make them appear. Photo uploading is also much faster, and you can finally upload pictures from your library that you've previously taken. Dozens of bug fixes have also been fixed, improving stability greatly.

that's good.
there should be a master list of apps where the mobile version of the webpage is better!

is there an app for browsing flickr groups? as far as I'm aware m.flickr.com doesn't allow this
― czn, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:29 (sixteen years ago) link
there is an app called Mobile Flickr which is not actually made by flickr that lets you search on flickr groups. its a pretty good app except that it posts the photos you upload upside down.

someone should make an app called KITCHEN SYNC. i don't know what it does. grocery lists? keeps track of what's in your fridge?
― s1ocki, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:18 (sixteen years ago) link
hey, can you re-arrange icons and move em around and stuff?
― s1ocki, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:29 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah, press and hold on one of the icons and the screen will go all wobbly, you can then move the icons around
KITCHEN SYNC pushes details of what's in your fridge and store cupboard up to the cloud and effortlessly syncs ON IPHONE so you never run out of olive oil

― s1ocki, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:55 (sixteen years ago) link
instapaper is great, it lets you save web pages when you're browsing on your home computer so you can read them offline on iphone
most of the clutter is on page 2, I like page 1 nice and neat
― czn, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:56 (sixteen years ago) link
instapaper = fuckn' awesome.
― grimly fiendish, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:59 (sixteen years ago) link
yes - although not so good for pages requiring a login (where it doesn't work).

the apps store will give you the Koran for free and you can add different translations for a fee
I think this is awesome
― J0hn D., Monday, 21 July 2008 14:21 (sixteen years ago) link
why would you ever need to read anything offline? For the subway?
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:23 (sixteen years ago) link
dressing rooms, tour bus when out of range, airplanes - I spend about half my life in these places

Give the guy a break, he's busy cranking out updates on a daily basis. From his blog: http://inessential.com/?comments=1&postid=3505
I’ve been working like crazy on updates to NetNewsWire for iPhone — but, unfortunately, updates aren’t being pushed to the App Store yet. I don’t know why, though I imagine it’s just that things are crazy in the early days.I don’t know when updates will go out — wish I did.In the meantime, here’s what I’ve been doing, and here’s the plan:1. I’ve been fixing bugs and performance issues, and implementing some of the more obvious features. (Not done yet, but getting there.)Some of the obvious features include things like email-link, choose-clippings-folder, send-to-Twitterrific, mark-as-unread, and remove-feed-from-iPhone-location.The plan is to finish this up — make stable and fleshed-out the app as it exists right now.2. Then I’ll revisit the user interface. A number of people have asked for something like a Combined View, where you see excerpts of news items. A reasonable request, absolutely. But the plan is to shore things up in #1 first, then move on to this, once there’s a stable base with a more complete set of features.Again, I have no idea when any updates will actually appear. But I have indeed been working as quickly as I can — I’ve been pretending to myself that you’re actually getting the updates. ;) (Though not completely satisfying, the pretense fools me enough to keep me going.)PS Here are my change notes since last Friday:

Not that I have an iPhone, but I do love NetNewsWire on the desktop. That said, the Newsgator service is terrible, randomly decides it can read feeds and can't due to "malformed" code that reads perfectly fine in every other newsreader, on- and off-line. If you have to use Newsgator Online to sync your feeds just like with the desktop version... eh.
― Nhex, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 08:40 (sixteen years ago) link
i just find the fact that you can't collapse your feed folders makes it pretty much unusable. also super jerky and slow.

i got truphone and it seems to work pretty well... it's a voip app, 6c a minute in n america. do you think skype is coming though?
still, the ability to make cheap long distance calls & not use up my minutes is pretty incredible. only works over wifi natch but i make pretty much all my LDCs from home anyway.

is anyone else finding the gps kinda inaccurate? mine tends to be off by like 3 blocks.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 18:47 (sixteen years ago) link
Mine is scary-accurate. Remember, GPS doesn't work well indoors, so if you are indoors, it may just give you the location of the nearest cell tower.

fuck me, they *need* to be releasing that netnewswire upgrade ASAP. it's just crashed on me so hard it reset the bloody phone.
and, heh, opening it again takes it right back to, umm, the bit where it crashed. so it hangs all over again.
hoping syncing sorts it out ...
