haha shit!!

i meant tuesday 27th yes!

i'm dumb - i was looking at my windows NT calendar and 22nd was highlighted and i typed it. contrary to my believe windows NT does not read minds and therefore it highlights today's date rather than the date i was thinking off. arrrgh :(

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 22 April 2004 11:33 (twenty years ago) link

I think Stevem is in NYC right now so may not be updating the calendar. But I might be wrong.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago) link

I can't make this. Lameosity is mine. Also, work. I'd really, really, have liked to, honest.

But but, I'll see y'all for tennis! Meh.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:45 (twenty years ago) link

bump.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 25 April 2004 21:32 (twenty years ago) link

the numbers are back to 7 as there will be a foreign import ben coming from that sinister place. see you all on tues.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 25 April 2004 21:42 (twenty years ago) link

JtN:
> I can probably be persuaded.

cool. i predict at least one 'he is what is known in some schools as a fucking lazy, thick Nipper' joke. 8)

koogs (koogs), Monday, 26 April 2004 06:58 (twenty years ago) link

I got injured trying to dance on Saturday.

Might come for keepin only.

Sean Carter (roc), Monday, 26 April 2004 16:53 (twenty years ago) link

ok.. i'm gonna bring a ball tomorrow then (hopefully it doesnt get confiscated by the middlesex crown court!!! esp after the nike brazilian advert stylee action i'm gonna do in the courtroom)

those who are coming see you all at 6:30! if late call me (number is a few posts above) or look for us at the nearest flat patch of grass from regent's park stn.

after playing tennis on saturday, swimming on sunday and 10-pin bowling + passing the 190bpm "paranoia rebirth" song on the hardest level of DDR earlier, I'm gonna be either extremely fit or really knackered. we'll see!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 26 April 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

I am going to have to drop out of this, I am afraid. I sliced my big toe open on some laminate flooring at the weekend :(

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 09:00 (twenty years ago) link

Most middle-class injury evah? If you slipped on sun-dried tomato oil it would be even better.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 10:18 (twenty years ago) link

Didn't Peter Paphides used to do a column in Time Out on middle class injuries?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 10:23 (twenty years ago) link

I hope this doesn't keep you out of the tennis, Jezza.

I can't play this evening cos the Guv'nor is showing me round 'is manor and it would be seriously disrespectful not to take 'im up on 'is kind offer. Comprendez?

(Also I have a steenkin' cold).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 10:48 (twenty years ago) link

I can't come as I am still shaken after choking on a pine nut.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 10:54 (twenty years ago) link

I banged my head on my Habitat pine pot-rack of Nigella Lawson crockery.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 11:24 (twenty years ago) link

Was that an industrial injury, Jerry? Are you going to come over all trucker's cap, 60 a day & gravelly voice like Kurt Wagner?

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 11:54 (twenty years ago) link

I slipped as I got out of the bath on Sunday morning to turn over a Byrds cassette that had come to the end of the side. I have a bluddy grate hole in my right big toe now. :(

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:27 (twenty years ago) link

I can make this now. Can one of the above injured come along with the requisite pacific ocean organic sponge and a bucket of aqua libre for injuries and some canapes for half time.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:34 (twenty years ago) link

Should be there at Regents Park tube at 6.30 or thereabouts - if not, see y'all at the next FAKA or FAP all being well.

darren (darren), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:09 (twenty years ago) link

Bloody typical midweek friendly withdrawals. I'll be at the tube at 6.30. I've forgotten my mobile (why today? I never do this!), so could someone pick me up at the station - at street level, of course? I'm short with black hair and I'll be wearing a khaki-coloured jacket.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago) link

I have been hit by a heavily annotated copy of Adaline Glasheen's Census of Finnegans Wake, flung by an irate ultra on the terraces.

the finefox, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:36 (twenty years ago) link

We have thunder and lightning in Tottenham now, so I don't fancy your chances of a rain-free game.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:10 (twenty years ago) link

I don't fancy their chances of a flood free pitch.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:51 (twenty years ago) link

holy shit, so we had a 5 men strong squad (ambrose, eyeballkicks, canada briggs, ken c, sinister ben), it was raining like shit but thought not to let the quality in the team be wasted, so we went to the park anyway in spite of the thunderstorm.

To our surprise, at the park, there was still these folks, who were STILL PLAYING FOOTBALL!! "Local hardcores" as described by canada briggs, so we challenged them to a game and they accepted and we played in the stormy pitch (thank god for their flourescent ball).

With the rain cascading down on us, it was no place for fancy trickery. The other team tried it but their advances were quenched by a few sliding tackles. Our route one, ball over the top tactics worked a treat and WE THRASHED THEM! Final score was 17-9.

eyeballkicks' forehead was full of mud after all the headers. he may have scored one with his eye (eyeball kicked!)

so much fun - same again next tuesday? (hopefully sans rain?)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 06:24 (twenty years ago) link

ambrose was in particularly fine form, being in 2 places at once (also, looking at the room in my house)

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 08:11 (twenty years ago) link

Jaysis you chaps are hardcore. I did my grocery shopping after work and emerged into the Great DelugeTM, but got home eventually with soaking shoes but dry chorizo.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 08:17 (twenty years ago) link

Mmm - Chorizo.

Congrats to the hardcore ILE champs but doing anything in pouring rain that doesn't involve getting out of the rain as soon as possible = mentalism.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 08:23 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, it was 17-9 final score. But Ken, you forget about the 9-0 start we gave them.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 08:43 (twenty years ago) link

Ken, did you get my text, saying that the weather was going to come between me and the game? (I feel decidedly nesh now, hearing of your intrepidness.)

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 10:54 (twenty years ago) link

yeah got yer txt - thanks for txting so we didn't have to hang around actually and got straight to the ahem "action"!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:14 (twenty years ago) link

Intrepid? It was man against the odds, five young men battling against nature and the hordes of ugly-minded and mean-spirited locals who remained, despited the weather, the unwashed.
I have a burning in my breast when I remember Kokney Ken, a la Michael Caine at Rourke's Drift, crying "Footballers! Fahzands of 'em. Comin' over the hill," and seeing the steely determination fix his face. I knew then we would not lose. We were outnumbered, but not outplayed. When Eyeball Kicks forgot his Caledonian ancestry to rally his number with the immortal speech: "I see you Stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the Start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit; and, upon this charge
Cry "God for Harry! England and Saint George!"

I admit I started to cry. And I am not a man known for easy tears. This spirit, along with the kind of football genius unknown even to the greats of Brazil, is what will surely come to be known as the FAKA Spirit. It was like Dunkirk. Only in Regent's Park. And with fewer Germans.
Next week, then, chaps. Bring your boots and your FAKA Spirit. We will fight them on the park. Whatever the weather. Just don't let Ken near the jukebox in the pub after the game. He is not to be trusted. He is already the subject of transfer interest from I Love Soft Rock.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 16:51 (twenty years ago) link

were we the men? or the odds?

or the odd men?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago) link

Respect to those that made it, unlike myself who stayed in the sanctuary of an Old Street pub while the rain shat down on Regent's Park before heading to the Boogaloo to come 5th in the quiz alongside Japanese Giraffe.

darren (darren), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:12 (twenty years ago) link

Hey, I made it to the quiz as well. Both could be done! (we came second, after sacrificing our half-time lead.)

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Thursday, 29 April 2004 07:37 (twenty years ago) link

Boys boys boys, did you not notice that I was left behind, buried neck deep in mud after foolishly heading one of Ken's high clearances? I made it home only now, without toes.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 29 April 2004 08:08 (twenty years ago) link

We did not notice. We were all entranced by Ken parading around in the spandex all-in-one kit supplied to him by I Love Soft Rock. I don't think it was enough to tempt Ken to transfer, but their cheerleading squad (Gladiators' G-Force, who've been persuaded to come out of retirement by the acid wash denim pom-poms) might. Ken - whose side are you on?

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Thursday, 29 April 2004 08:16 (twenty years ago) link

*maintains a diplomatic silence*

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 29 April 2004 09:16 (twenty years ago) link

i sit over the fence, as usual. i'm semi with you guys, but also half-way there, as it were.

REVIVE.

haha, a little short notice for today, i guess, but i DO have a football and kit if anyone is up for more mud action today.

Otherwise, who's free for THURSDAY? (giving the clouds a chance to go away)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 09:32 (twenty years ago) link

cant really do anything until next wekk, while i get out new place sorted

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 09:56 (twenty years ago) link

Next week is much more likely for me, too.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 11:48 (twenty years ago) link

okie.. yeah guess we need some time to recover from last week's epic struggle with the local boys.

i'll keep my football stuff at work on standby whenever but mark next tuesday in your diaries for footie action? hopefully the weather will be good and nobody would have broken any toes on ceremics.

TUES 11th May - 6:30 regents park tube

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 11:56 (twenty years ago) link

woah that came out bigger than i expected

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 11:57 (twenty years ago) link

If the weather stays like this I'd be up for it this evening.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:03 (twenty years ago) link

Ach, the sun's just shown up. Never mind.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:17 (twenty years ago) link

there'll still be enough mud for burying your face in to your heart's desire!!!!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago) link

i can make the tuesday i think, tho i don't really approve of these schoolnight sessions

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:19 (twenty years ago) link

I can make next week if my trench foot has cleared up by then.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:17 (twenty years ago) link

remember it's CLub Popular the next night tho so we'll have to go easy if we want to dance to Abba, Dexy's and Charles & bloody Eddie 24 hours later

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:47 (twenty years ago) link

Dancing is not compulsory. Feel free to hold court nursing a mild hamstring injury and a tequila sunrise while you regale a captive audience with your feats of the day before. It's what Charles and Eddie would've wanted.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:52 (twenty years ago) link

Oi, are any of you new footballing types going to come to a proper FAP one of these days? (Club Popular is a good shout, btw)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:54 (twenty years ago) link

It's a busy life. We tend to go out mob-handed to a rather strict routine of:
Monday - basket-weaving for beginners at London Institute
Tuesday - we play the football
Wednesday - we translate ethnic slurs for refugees at the citizens' advice bureau
Thursday - speed dating
Friday - light gym session followed by too many bottled beers and a dance with the laydeez at a suburban niteclub
Saturday - salsa lessons followed by classic DVD night at one of our houses. The night generally climaxes with a fond look at the highlights of The Great Escape.
Sunday - we do, of course, chill on a Sunday.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:07 (twenty years ago) link

and the 'cocks.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm sure I've got a racket somewhere, but I fear it might have fallen victim to a purge when I moved house. There's a tube full of 'cocks lying aroud in my kitchen from previous tenants, so i can bring that along.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't have a single cock, but I have a racket. The strings may disintegrate the moment I hit anything with it, though - does anyone have a spare they can bring just in case?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:20 (eighteen years ago) link

i'll see if my flatmate has one.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:21 (eighteen years ago) link

okay guys i have a second court booked as well. just so that we can all be in on some action. see you all 5:30 at the sobell centre? just at the reception.

Argh, I have to bail on this, I'm afraid - sorry if this leaves you short of numbers! See some of you later at Lumi, though.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 14 May 2006 11:52 (eighteen years ago) link

oops! see you later on then

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 14 May 2006 12:21 (eighteen years ago) link

See y'all there just before 5.30!

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 14 May 2006 14:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Still smarting after defeat to Markelby, and my right arm feels a bit trembly, but badminton was great fun. more please.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Monday, 15 May 2006 07:59 (eighteen years ago) link

So many parts of me are stiff and sore after badminton and cricket. Damn you old age!

But it was great fun - the game between me and Daniel was pretty epic (I felt like I'd been playing for days rather than 45 minutes, unlike my sprightly opponent), but not as epic as Darren and Ken's to-the-wire finale. Definitely want to do it again soon - 6 people on two courts would be ace cos then there'd be the opportunity to rest between games :)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 15 May 2006 09:03 (eighteen years ago) link

sorry for missing this. good that there were 4 of you tho.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 15 May 2006 09:10 (eighteen years ago) link

I saw Ken, later. He was glowing, healthily.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 10 August 2006 11:36 (seventeen years ago) link

is it already dead?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 11 August 2006 10:27 (seventeen years ago) link

can't do this sunday now btw

ken c (ken c), Friday, 11 August 2006 10:27 (seventeen years ago) link

one year passes...

Anyone interested in joining my weekly game on Mondays in Regents Park? We usually manage to cobble together about 7 or 8 uncordinated reprobates which is not quite enough to make a decent game so we typically join forces with any other shorthanded game - a highly unsatisfactory arrangement because they likely as not turn out to be a bunch of cocks.

if we could get a couple more together regulars I reckon we could manage a really decent game.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 10:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i would like to but unfortunately already playing another regular monday one in south tottenham! :\ (plus i currently recovering broken foot)

ken c, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 10:30 (fifteen years ago) link

What time do you start, Nick? And are you really all malcos or are any of you actually quite good (NB the latter would be a bad thing)?

Mark C, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 12:32 (fifteen years ago) link

we tend to start around 7 - or whenever i turn up.

there are some decent players amongst us (i am probably one of the least capable but what i lack in skill i more than make up for in mouthiness) but no ronaldos and no-one takes it too seriously, which is why last night was so frustrating.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 12:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Didn't realise the extnet of your injury, Ken.

As for your game, Upt0eleven, I play with Ken (I say!) in South Tottenham on a Monday already. Which gives me an idea - perhaps we could have a showdown between your Monday people and ours later in the week...!

Daniel Giraffe, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 14:16 (fifteen years ago) link

^^^ This is a mighty fine idea. Won't take much to persuade my boyz and I imagine the extra exercise won't hurt. Unless i break my foot. Which I almost certainly will.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 14:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Great! I'm sure there won't be too much arm-twisting required on our side either.

Regents Park? Wednesdays?

Daniel Giraffe, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 14:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Sounds good to me. Seeing some tonight for a gig - will report back.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 16:45 (fifteen years ago) link
