haha i seriously thought "she was days" was some sort of awesome slang term at first
― k3vin k., Sunday, 10 April 2011 22:50 (thirteen years ago) link
I bet no one's ever birdied out from behind to win--not four holes deep, anyway.
― clemenza, Sunday, 10 April 2011 22:51 (thirteen years ago) link
huh wiki says it's pronounced "karl" but clearly jim nantz does not agree
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 April 2011 22:51 (thirteen years ago) link
lol kev the one time i casually drop an apostrophe

holy fuck that shot schwartzel made on the first hole!
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 April 2011 22:57 (thirteen years ago) link

― the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 April 2011 22:58 (thirteen years ago) link
stupid ending to a stupid tournament in a stupid sport imo
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:00 (thirteen years ago) link
nah golf is rad
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:01 (thirteen years ago) link
being a casual golf fan is pretty bad, it has the capacity to deflate drama like nothing else. EXCITEMENT EXCITEMENT EXCITEMENT o some boring asshole you've never heard of just appeared from nowhere and won.
― Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:03 (thirteen years ago) link
how is that not awesome?
― the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:09 (thirteen years ago) link
that's the best part! anyone can put together a good weekend and beat the big names you're for some reason expected to root for.
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link
nah that's not the best part really but jordan is completely wrong
― k3vin k., Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:14 (thirteen years ago) link
the masters isn't a stupid tournament but golf is a stupid, often hateable, sport
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:15 (thirteen years ago) link
I don't know if today makes me more or less optimistic about Tiger catching Nicklaus. That missed eagle putt was ominous.
― clemenza, Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:16 (thirteen years ago) link
uh clemenza the guy hasn't won a tournament in 2 years, he isn't catching nicklaus
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:17 (thirteen years ago) link
he's catchin him alright
― the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:19 (thirteen years ago) link
I defer to your powers of ESP.

- spits into baccy jar, rocks a little more on his chair -
I'd be completely fine with it if the guys appearing from nowhere didn't always seem like boring assholes! That's not a plucky underdog I can get behind. Tho I appreciate that the judgement of them in those terms doesn't have much basis and so is probably my problem.
― Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:19 (thirteen years ago) link
ha yeah that's part of it
also it's more fun when the big names are in contention/leading because they are the best players and have the most/coolest shots
― k3vin k., Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:22 (thirteen years ago) link
what's your beef with golf, sarge?
like in terms of it's boring to watch, or you think the game itself is dumb, or the privilege/politics?
― k3vin k., Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:23 (thirteen years ago) link
i still can't understand the mentality that tiger is of all a sudden gonna be able to flip a switch back to 2001 -- idk how many tournaments in a row he has to falter in before ppl just give up on it

mostly the last one, some of the other two -- i usually watch the back nines of the majors, that's about all i can watch tho
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:24 (thirteen years ago) link
if that was tiger faltering.............
― the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:25 (thirteen years ago) link
Well, he doesn't need to flip the switch back to 2001--he needs to flip it back to 2009, when he won six tournaments. I'm not saying it will happen, but I don't know how you can say with such absolute certainty that it won't happen. Great athletes do surprising things.
― clemenza, Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:26 (thirteen years ago) link
the guy hasn't won a tournament in 2 years, he isn't catching nicklaus
He's only 35. Nicklaus was 46 when he won his 5th Masters, and Tiger already has 5. PLENTY of time for him to eclipse Nicklaus.

And, again, I think today sent out a mixed message in terms of his chances.

mmmmhmmm
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:27 (thirteen years ago) link
would back tiger to win 1 of the next 4 majors on todays showing

how about 4 more after that
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:30 (thirteen years ago) link
Tiger's definitely shown some poor play over the last two years, but you're not as good as he was for as long as he was and then just lose it.
― That's why they call me (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:31 (thirteen years ago) link
No formula for this, but I'd say his chances have dropped in two years from the 80%+ range down to about...25 or 30%. Which'd be decent. (He needs four to tie and five to go ahead, right?)
― clemenza, Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:32 (thirteen years ago) link
call it one every three years, divide by 7, carry the 2, yeah i'd say he'll do it
― the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:33 (thirteen years ago) link
In sports, not usually, though it does happen. Elsewhere, cf. the Rolling Stones and Martin Scorsese.

yeah, that's right clem

Hmm, I thought he had five Masters wins, but he only has four. Hmm.

yeah i agree w/that

I've been trying to think of a baseball player near Tiger's level who lost it overnight, and I'm having a hard time--McGwire, sort of, with some obvious extenuating circumstances. Maybe CAD can come up with somebody. Overnight baseball collapses are usually just explainable in terms of age. And, obscured by all his other problems, age is something Tiger has to contend with--I don't think a lot of majors have been won past 40, and he's getting close.
― clemenza, Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:41 (thirteen years ago) link
Masters is by far my favorite major. I like the others too, but Augusta is just an immaculate course.
― That's why they call me (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:41 (thirteen years ago) link
He'll be 40 in 2015, but if he rebounds he's the type of player who could do really well on the other side of 40.
― That's why they call me (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:42 (thirteen years ago) link
him almost winning today means that he still might be able to win a few masters since he's dominated that course over time but we'll see what happens when the courses change
