Yeah, i know.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Monday, 11 April 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

If I can be completely inconsistent for a moment, I have to say I fucking hate Kobe Bryant.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Monday, 11 April 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

kobe is a great villain & i resent the way his sins as a basketball player have been washed away by the media, but the guy's a straight assassin & for that i love him

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 April 2011 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link

also it was thrilling to have him on 'our' side for team USA

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 April 2011 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link

kobe is fun, def an amazing supervillain and just a heartless bastard in all likelihood, i'm sure he's murdered many people IRL as well as on the court but all of that makes him pretty awesome. i hate him but enjoy him.

omar little, Monday, 11 April 2011 22:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Kobe's assassin persona would be a lot more enjoyable if he wasn't one the league's top whiners and floppers. He and Brandon Roy lead the league in mid-layup yelps.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 11 April 2011 22:15 (thirteen years ago) link

rofl @ the idea of derrick rose as charismatic -- he has about as much personality as the statute they'll eventually erect for him outside of the united center

― J0rdan S., Monday, April 11, 2011 9:52 PM (22 minutes ago) Bookmark

so true. He has just about the most vacant expression during interviews that I've ever seen.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 11 April 2011 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

people who yelp are scumbags

omar little, Monday, 11 April 2011 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

If I see one more Kobe Bryant review of a "charming little bistro," I'm done with the NBA.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 11 April 2011 22:17 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah charismatic was totally the wrong word...i guess his in-game energy and "plays the game the right way" reputation and lack of villain status would be more appropriate positives for his marketing.

omar little, Monday, 11 April 2011 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

i sorta feel like the nba conditions its stars to act that way -- once you get rewarded for a certain act 10,000 times in your life, you start to get pissy when you don't get that same reward every time? idk. for instance lebron & wade whine incessantly. dwight just got suspended for too many technicals. just sorta part of the territory imo.

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 April 2011 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

his game is certainly flashy in terms how he finishes at the rim

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 April 2011 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i really hate that about kobe how he's so used to getting all the calls his way that he bitches when the game is called fairly, but hey, that's the NBA...lebron does this too

frogbs, Monday, 11 April 2011 22:42 (thirteen years ago) link

i suspect she would still prefer that she hadn't been humiliated by her husband raw dogging sluts around the world while she stayed at home taking care of the kids

well i'm sure she'd rather Tiger stayed faithful too but I think you're kidding yourself if you think there aren't a lot of people out there who are willing to accept getting cheated on for $750,000,000

frogbs, Monday, 11 April 2011 22:54 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean obviously the situation is pretty horrible for her and I feel bad for her to some degree, but I think on the whole there are a lot of people who would definitely trade places with her right now

frogbs, Monday, 11 April 2011 22:58 (thirteen years ago) link

besides, marrying an athlete like Tiger is like singing Ron Artest or Manny Ramirez to a long contract...like, it can work out, but if things go sour it's not like you shouldn't have seen it coming

omar I think the next nba superstar you're reaching for is kevin durant

i think drake distracts (dayo), Monday, 11 April 2011 23:08 (thirteen years ago) link

but yeah now that wade has the whiff of lebron-taint the nba needs a new superclean superstar

i think drake distracts (dayo), Monday, 11 April 2011 23:09 (thirteen years ago) link

actually i agree w/ bethlehem shoals in that rose/bulls have overtaken durant/thunder as the young star/team that's the antithesis of the heat deathstar for ppl who want to root against them & what they 'represent'

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 April 2011 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link

so glad that you agree with a spammer

i think drake distracts (dayo), Monday, 11 April 2011 23:11 (thirteen years ago) link

are you talking about frogbs

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 April 2011 23:12 (thirteen years ago) link

durant would be w/o a doubt "the man" on certain teams but i think he's hurt by the fact that most people don't give a shit about the thunder.

omar little, Monday, 11 April 2011 23:14 (thirteen years ago) link

hahah no, 'bethlehem shoals' is a great name but I don't know who that is

i think drake distracts (dayo), Monday, 11 April 2011 23:14 (thirteen years ago) link

the thunder would have to make a huge playoff run for durant to enter the conversation. it's totally possible this year.

"this way"?? he shot 67 on sunday and came in 4th!

― k3vin k., Monday, 11 April 2011 22:32 Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

31 out, 36 back says more than "he shot 67" - you don't shoot 36 in the last 9 holes and win championships.

death, taxes and (onimo), Monday, 11 April 2011 23:18 (thirteen years ago) link

But if you shoot a 67 on the last 18 holes, sometimes you win championships.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Monday, 11 April 2011 23:24 (thirteen years ago) link

And by the way ... of all of his major victories, 67 is actually the lowest he's ever shot on the last day. You can look it up!

he did 3-putt 10 times right?

i don't think anyone's won a major 3-putting that many times

Kobe: 5 rings
Lebron: lucky to even get ring around the fucking collar.

i could see scenarios where the heat win it, they are playing well, celtics have fallen off since the perkins trade...

Win what, the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs?

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah I don't see them beating the Bulls, obviously the Heat are great but they really haven't shown an ability to compete with top-tier teams like the Bulls/Heat/Spurs/Celtics. Thought last month that the Celts would crush them in round 2 but they've really taken a dive.

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:52 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm not gonna say that the heat are going to beat the celtics or the bulls, but they're about even money with either team, maybe even odds on favorites over the celts now

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 April 2011 20:27 (thirteen years ago) link

favs over the celts now, but I can't see them beating the Bulls

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 20:46 (thirteen years ago) link

if had to bet i would bet on the bulls but it's ridiculous to say the heat couldn't get super hot and win the whole thing

a fort minor forest (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:14 (thirteen years ago) link

it's ridiculous to say that they couldn't beat them 4 times out of 7 when the two games they played in the regular season when both teams were healthy came down to the final shot

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I know it's possible but I can see the Heat get super-exposed during the playoffs; you can see the Bulls elevate their game in crunch-time while the Heat blow a lot of big leads, they just don't seem like they're built for the playoffs. Obviously anyone can win and with that much talent the Heat have a legit shot but it seems to me like they're going to struggle vs. any other top tier team. Like, I can believe the Bulls sweeping the Heat but don't see it happening the other way around.

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link

idk bron and wade have plenty of experience in the playoffs w/ teams that are not that much more poorly composed than the current heat one. I could totally see them turning on 'the switch'

x-factor might be spoelstra and how he matches up with thibodeau/rivers/pop/jax/karl/etc

Will Tiger Woods' car/life crash factor in at all?

clemenza, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 00:49 (thirteen years ago) link

xxp well if this year is telling us anything it's that the Cavs teams of the last two years definitely were not just Lebron + a bunch of scrubs, 1 v. 5 basketball the way everyone in the media was making it sound. last years cavs > this year's heat so far.

It's got a pretty good low post game, and a decent midrange jumper. Problems with foul trouble though could make it a non-factor.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 13:28 (thirteen years ago) link

wait frogbs, what about this year's cavs???

i think drake distracts (dayo), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 14:22 (thirteen years ago) link

They built around Lebron so it's no surprise they collapsed after they left. Pretty much every move they made was based around him; like, not to understate the guy's talent at all, but all they really have left are role players, plus they don't even really have the same starting lineup as last year at all. the regular season records have to mean SOMETHING...
