The problem with the fact that you can count on only about 10 fonts existing on all computers is that they're all pretty well shopworn by now. E.g., there are (to my knowledge) 4 sans-serif fonts you can count on being available to any graphical web-display device:

TNR is shit on screens anyway.

I seem to recall that the next version of Firefox will contain dynamic font technology. (Does anyone remember Truedoc?) I suppose that might shake up the snowglobe a bit.

xp to libcrypt. Sure, I realize all too well that typographical options on the web are limited, Times sucks, Verdana is a screen font, the Typography unit at Microsoft is surprisingly sophisticated and well-funded for a company with such poor corporate taste, Eric Gill slept with his daughter and his dog, etc., etc., but I still hate Verdana.

xp, there's an IE version too: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/07/21/font-embedding-on-the-web.aspx

I love Verdana but it is growing a bit tired.

Does old.css's win tell us something about some vague inherent conservatism or fear/dislike of change? Or is it simply the most useable/readable one of the bunch? Do new members also pick old.css when they experiment with their preferences?
― StanM, Monday, 15 September 2008 07:03 (fifteen years ago) link
I expected the default one would win.
― StanM, Monday, 15 September 2008 07:05 (fifteen years ago) link
Actually, black Times against a white background doesn't exactly scream out to the rest of the office that you're posting to message boards all day. It could be a Word document for all they know.

old.css is great because it's simpler and wittier.

do this poll again after my new one drops, it could get DOUBLE the votes

which thread was the list of css classes on?

coming soon: caek.css
― Convert your pencil into a large pole (caek), Monday, 15 September 2008 12:10 (fifteen years ago) link
Will caek.css drop SCIENCE on us? Coz ifso, that's the one I'm going for. (Though I want assurances it will not generate tiny black holes in my operating system.)
― The Lesser of Two Weevils (Masonic Boom), Monday, 15 September 2008 12:23 (fifteen years ago) link
the background image will be the hubble deep field and all text will be at 6x10^-36 pt.

Yesss!!!!
(Can all posts by killfiled members be shown being sucked into supermassive black hole at centre of galaxy, please?)

I would like to add my vote for Kenan's style sheet although I missed this actual poll. It's so sleek and minimalist. Brings a level of class to Ilx I didn't think possible.
― Hated like a city cop (Susan), Monday, 15 September 2008 13:18 (fifteen years ago) link
Thank you, though I can't take credit for the minimalist part. That's pretty much enforced by the html, and rightly so.
― so glitchy (kenan), Monday, 15 September 2008 13:44 (fifteen years ago) link
old.css should be the default - its ilx's trademark

Yeah making old.css the default seems sensible.
― Matt DC, Monday, 15 September 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link
it's really really easy to change it tho... i wonder if noobs would naturally drift to old.css. it might be worth keeping the default as is for some sort of experiment there (ymmv re worth of course)

Um, what just happened?
― jaymc, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:12 (fifteen years ago) link
new blueski.css is available now, rewritten for the new code
― Aare-Reuss Böögg (blueski), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:22 (fifteen years ago) link
I guess that's what happened. I'm not sure how I feel about it.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:28 (fifteen years ago) link
it's awesome :)
i could make the line between each post fainter maybe
― Aare-Reuss Böögg (blueski), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:36 (fifteen years ago) link
Actually, I'm fine with that. It's the New Answers page that I feel unsure about. Like there's too much space between each thread title, maybe? It might just be something I'll get used to, though.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:40 (fifteen years ago) link
It is really good. Nice one.
― Keith, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:40 (fifteen years ago) link
Oh and thanks for sorting it out.
― Keith, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:41 (fifteen years ago) link
i approve of new blueski.css. some text is a little bit small for my eyes is my only grumble.
old.css should be deleted to force these luddites to get with the times, man

sorry it took so long keef
jaymc, that did occur to me but i do think it makes it a little bit clearer overall
― Aare-Reuss Böögg (blueski), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:47 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah, I think I'll be OK. Good work, Steve.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:48 (fifteen years ago) link
also the square bullets look weird, varying heights somehow. fiddling with the gap between thread titles might fix that i dunno.
― Aare-Reuss Böögg (blueski), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:48 (fifteen years ago) link
If there was a version of keith.css that used serif fonts, I'd use that. READABILITY!!!
― Radiant Flowering Crab (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 17:55 (fifteen years ago) link
Well, I stuck a keith2 (and a style3) there that have the fonts removed, so they will pick up whatever font your browser is set to use.
― Keith, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link
SWEEEEET, thanks!
― Radiant Flowering Crab (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 18:15 (fifteen years ago) link
oh yeh style3 ftw

Yeah, that's the one right thurr.
― Radiant Flowering Crab (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link
shit, steve, nu-blueski is really damn nice. i'm gonna try using it on this mac (powerbook) for a bit and keep old_git.css on the other one -- see how i get on.
― grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 22:49 (fifteen years ago) link
Hey, nu-blu is pretty nice! I'd maybe double the left margin (or more, actually have it more or less match the right margin) and pick a slightly larger and serifed font for the main text. And probably make the input box thinner. But... hm!
― Casuistry, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 23:37 (fifteen years ago) link
so, can you change the font size on blueski? cos that font that shows is too small for me. otherwise i like it. i might even use it if i could make the text bigger.
― jed_, Thursday, 18 September 2008 00:31 (fifteen years ago) link
i like the stealthiness of style-monochrome-no-borders.css: Standard Stylesheet in monochrome, tables with no borders
― terminator boyfriend (rrrobyn), Thursday, 18 September 2008 00:33 (fifteen years ago) link
it also adds a poetic charm
― terminator boyfriend (rrrobyn), Thursday, 18 September 2008 00:34 (fifteen years ago) link
browser zoom/text size should override the css
i'll probably do a version without fixed text sizes tho

I'd love to see a version of iPhone.css with a sans font. I'd do it myself if I had a clue about stylesheets.
