i wish there was something like cigarettes that wasn't smoking. i think the biggest thing keeping me from smoking is that i'm against corporate cultural domination. the next biggest thing is the health issue, obv. i like the whole idea of 5-10 min breaks throughout the day to do something enjoyable - that isn't harmful (e.g., smoking, eating junk food) or socially unacceptable in public (e.g., sex, massages) or detrimental to my workday (e.g., w33d, booze, long conversations abt tangential stuff)
anyway, yeah, no junk food in the house is the best idea. also, i think giving the kids an allowance for it is a good idea. you could even give yourself an allowance. knowing how much you're spending on junk food wld be pretty sobering, i bet.
also, cognitive behavioural therapy

i think the wanking is the best advice so far.
it's cardio vascular exercise as well as keeping your hands busy

Exercise, then you won't want to eat so much crap.

I sometimes have the same problem re: kids, so I usually try to buy stuff he likes and I don't. I've also been eating the hell out of blueberry applesauce because for whatever reason my brane thinks it's enough like candy that it satisfies my craving.
― luna, Thursday, 23 August 2007 16:26 (sixteen years ago) link
socially unacceptable in public
Smoking is definitely headed this way.
For breaks I usually just get a soda and walk around outside a bit. On days when I don't go out for lunch or have meetings outside my building getting up from the monitors is U&K. (meaning: walk is good substitute for smoke break or snack.)
― Ms Misery, Thursday, 23 August 2007 16:26 (sixteen years ago) link
oh i just figured out another thing that is a good break/distraction: listening to a song or two that you really like and that y'know takes you away for a bit like right now i'm listening to over the hills and far away and it is awesome

If you stop eating grains, sugar and red meat you can get away with eating IMMENSE amounts of other foods— fruit, cheese, fish and chicken. MOUNTAINS of food.

i haven't even looked for grass-fed beef - i hear bison is grass-fed but i haven't looked for that either. another good thing abt not eating convenience junk foods is that when you don't buy them you have more money to spend on expensive yuppie foods like bison aw yeah

I did my gap year of vodka + cigarettes + caffeine already: lost 30 lbs and slept A LOT and my friends had to intervene to feed me. Also I learned that when I have run out of body fat to hate (because I'm starving), I will instead hate my skeleton for not being narrower. THAT is the way madness lies.

It's true! I've dropped maybe two sizes since winter just by bringing my brek + lunch to the office from home. It forces me to cook (and saves money) and makes me look forward to eating my own awesome handiwork much more than when lunch was pizza. Not to harsh pizza, because y'know it's PIZZA...but. And also I <3 <3 <3 my bike(s) for keeping me outside and occupied and getting me places FAST.

cocaine is tricky. it increases the need to drink, so there's beer calories, plus "suicide tuesday" often finds one seeking comfort food. crystal meth might be the better choice.

Buh, anyone who has worked in a grocery is going to hate me, but how I got to stop BUYING ricockulous snacks was: I would carry it around with me in the store and then stuff it somewhere it didn't belong. "This bag of miniature Almond Joys does not belong next to the barbecue sauce and mustard! Hahaha, SOMEONE is going to think this is the craaaaziest grocery store ever!" (Well, it wasn't so much about the toddler-level of comic sophistication as I got to ditch the item as impulsively as I picked it up, which is equally fun in its own way. For me.)

Back when I cared more and was committed to losing weight and also working out in every spare moment of my free time, I ate a low fat (never more than 25%) diet w/no convenience/snack foods every day except Fridays. On Fridays, I got to indulge the food fantasy I'd been having all week - chocolate or barbeque or crispy duck w/ plum sauce or cheesecake. Then it was back to beans and salads and lowfat plain yoghurt on baked potatoes. It worked for me for as long as I needed it to.
