I have never heard that Washington Phillips before, what is that instrument? It's...er...ethereal?

i can't, i won't (Ned Trifle II), Friday, 27 May 2011 09:05 (thirteen years ago) link

it's beautiful innit? i think there's still some debate about exactly what he used: an instrument that sounds like a fretless zither. This instrument, which has been variously identified as a Dolceola, a Celestaphone, two Celestaphones tuned in octaves attached side-by-side, or a Phonoharp (and also is considered by some to be an instrument entirely home-made by Phillips) creates a unique sound on these recordings that makes them immediately recognizable.

two weeks pass...

Full of that "just on the brink of tears" maudlin happiness today, been floating like an ambivalent ghost for months. Okay years maybe. "Percy's Song" keeps looping round my head and filling me up with...something.

My line manager is a lovely woman who takes care of me and puts up with more of my bullshit than is reasonable tbh, but sometimes when we're liaising with tutors or other professionals she just comes out with these well-meaning but crass cultural stereotypes and I cringe a little bit inside and I feel bad for cringing a little bit cos I know she's on the side of good really. But it's tiring and niggly to always be around people who don't quite get it, whatever "it" might be.

Of course maybe I'm just a control freak. You stare into the unknowable cave of Other People's Brains for a while and man does it stare right back into you.
