indicates that cloud music is available "now" in 10.3, but 10.3 isn't available yet for download, for me anyway.

here's a quote that's been a long time coming:

With iOS 5, you no longer need a computer to own an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.

If you’re looking for a specific email, you can now search in the body of messages.

the fuck?? i thought it already did that

(clearly not)

Yeah, Match definitely isn't streaming. What cloud music means is that US users can treat songs like apps -- you can redownload them on any device. (You used to not be able to do this). Match extends that to music you ripped (max 25k songs).

Otherwise you still have to sync all your devices. But you can do this using wifi now so it's not nearly as bad as before.

ICloud Music, I mean

stet, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

I'm pretty positive you are wrong.

"Here’s how it works: iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. Any music with a match is automatically added to your iCloud library for you to listen to anytime, on any device. "

there is no physical 'download' and keep with match. you just play it off the cloud. it's not taking up physical space on your device's hard drive.

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 20:59 (twelve years ago) link

oh wait, you are right, and I am wrong:

http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2011/06/apple%E2%80%99s-music-icloud-is-nice-not-revolutionary/

"Unlike Amazon, Google, and most other music lockers, Apple iCloud actually downloads the files to your devices, rather than streaming them."

that is dumb.

but it's still kind of cool.

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

And I suppose like PlayStation Plus if you stop paying your subscription you lose all that music.

btw I'm guessing all those songs with US spelling that I corrected won't be matched.

"Unlike Amazon, Google, and most other music lockers, Apple iCloud actually downloads the files to your devices, rather than streaming them."

that is dumb.

It's dumb if it matches 12,500 songs and your iphone is 16gb long.

It's not like we could go to Islam (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 6 June 2011 21:02 (twelve years ago) link

i.e. I can't see myself wanting to use this service ever

It's not like we could go to Islam (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 6 June 2011 21:02 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah it's totally not clear what happens when you stop paying for Match. Because you actually have the files and they have no DRM, so you don't lose them. (I wonder what it does with the originals after upgrading them. Off to find an Appler)

stet, Monday, 6 June 2011 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

Wifi sync is going to solve x95% of the problem imo

stet, Monday, 6 June 2011 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

how does it match them? by title?

Unless you want to put some of your CDs or Vinyl on them of course

groovypanda, Monday, 6 June 2011 21:05 (twelve years ago) link

doesn't it match them tomyour locker on the icloud and make them available at upgraded spec for download at any time for listening? non matched songs are uploaded instead so you can do the same. ppl wih shit ID3s are presumably going to be subject to weeks of uploading not minutes?

princess timtam (cozen), Monday, 6 June 2011 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

btw I notice the itunes match graphic displays the new Duran Duran album which got pulled from our itunes store like three months ago and was never put back. Do subscribers get to keep/redownload that music too?

When photos are sent to your iOS device, they appear in a Photo Stream album that holds a rolling collection of your last 1000 photos.

Um I've got 1,000 photos of just whiteboard scans from work. This sounds annoying and unnecessary.

is lion upgrade only from snow leopard or will it upgrade 10.5?

if it's anything like snow leopard it will be sold as an upgrade, but will be capable of doing a fresh install.

caek, Monday, 6 June 2011 21:13 (twelve years ago) link

You download a lot of apps. And now you can see them in one convenient place: your purchase history on the App Store.

FUCKING FINALLY

lala.com matched based on song length and metadata only which made it very easy to fool

itunes match will be great for those 6.5b tech-illiterate ipod touch owners who don't have album covers for anything.

It's not like we could go to Islam (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 6 June 2011 21:35 (twelve years ago) link

well it isn't ideal but I will use it. I have a 500gb library of music at home, and then I have like, 100gb of music on my laptop which I take to work every day. I'd love to clear out most of that on my laptop and just be able to grab what I want from my home library while I'm at work. so fine by me, if not perfect.

akm, Monday, 6 June 2011 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

it's still gonna be a hassle. we'll have to download stuff we want to listen to at work, and then eventually we'll have to delete stuff when we accumulate too much.

w/r/t 10.5 the app store requires snow leopard and lion will have a recovery partition apparently; i assume apple want you to buy 10.6 to get 10.7 :(

The unimpeachably good stuff (regardless of whether it should have been there three years ago or not):

- ad-free browsing in ios safari
- free mobileme out of the box
- cloud sync from within apps (this should make my flashcard management 239847238947389749 times less painful)
- view and re-download apps you've purchased
- no need to use itunes ever again (for some people)
- cloud backup
- app state persistence across devices
- notifications that don't stop you halfway through doing something
- newsstand thingo
- some other thing i can't remember but it was cool
- CAMERA ACCESS FROM LOCK SCREEN
- using one of the volume buttons to take photos instead of that fucking awful and unacceptably fiddly on-screen button
- photo enhancements from within the std photos app
- automatic app updates every time you charge your phone (within wifi range)
- those incredibly awesome 4/5-finger swipe gestures in the ipad's dev mode will now be standard
- improvements to accessibility (people without impairments forget about this)
- the ipad has a split keyboard for thumb typing, i mean

I feel like this is the default mode for whenever we talk about any new feature in an apple product

dayo, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:41 (twelve years ago) link

One of the quiet but useful features of Lion per Gizmodo:

• Recovery Partition: Speaking of recovery, you might be wondering how you reinstall an OS that's download only. Well! Apple is clever, and Lion will include its own recovery partition—in other words, it can reinstall itself if your OS goes to hell.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:50 (twelve years ago) link

"a link on the Apple iCloud page reads "Try it today — download iTunes 10.3, free for Mac and PC", which takes me to a page where i can download iTunes 10.2.2"

I have already snarkily filed a complaint with my friend who works on the Apple Store.

iOS5 also has location based notifications which will be neat:

Give Book to John> When I arrive > John's address
Call Office > When I Leave > Client's address
