anything going on gig or club-wise on the 16th? would be good to feel a bit of the local culture on my flying conference visit.

Hm, couldn't really think of anything so had a look at the Source - nothing particularly exciting that day, I have to say.

This gig is pretty decent looking imho

16th June 2011
Green Door Store

Free Entry All Night

Pre-drinks from 5pm!
2 of the hottest girl bands in (and out of) town!
After Party with DJs and dancing till super late!

♥ Playing Live ♥

Las Robertas (Costa Rica)

Las Robertas deal in often heartbreak-soaked, timeless songs that swoon and swerve on the verge of fuzzed-out pop and classic 60s girl group harmonies.
They met as garage punk and 60s pop obsessed teens in their home town of San Jose, Costa Rica.
International love and affection from every blog and paper worth mentioning were heaped on their young shoulders almost immediately.
Catch them on this, the penultimate date on their first European tour.

La La Vasquez

Cheekily naming themselves after the reality television personality and MTV VJ, the London-based indie pop trio La La Vasquez formed in 2009 around the talents of guitarist Freya Watson, bassist Merida, and drummer Rachael. Purveying a murky, edgy, unabashedly lo-fi sound that welcomed comparisons to bands like the Marine Girls, Dolly Mixture, and Black Tambourine.

Oh, I didn't realise La La Vasquez were on that bill, or indeed that Sex is Disgusting had anything to do with it. The Source write-up just made it sound boring. Go to that, then!

okay!

Just looked at the Source and -oh no!- I missed Six Organs again. Gah! But yeah, not a lot on that Thursday. Cave of Dreams in 3D during the late afternoon though, I should make an effort to go and see that at the pictures.

Note to self: must visit Brighton again before summer ends.

Just find a hipster house party and take shitloads of ketamine, that's what seems to happen in Brighton whenever I've been there.

Looks like me and Craigo are going to that show in the end, as my brother's in town and wants something to do.

Also, I've just had a thought... are you going to the SSPT conference? Pretty sure I'm not, but I know a bunch of guys who're involved.

Spooky, Im up on saturday night for my birthday with a load of mates and was having bother finding something to do, I guess Im just spoilt with RA's penetration in london. Anyone know where the hip young folk hang out? My mates who are from round there dislike the place due to the towny element but the last time I was there I was taken round some rather cool places which I forget the names of

Hard Ons at the Albert on Sunday night o_O

cloaca flocka flame (NickB), Monday, 20 June 2011 10:54 (thirteen years ago) link

many days later - yeppp, I was at the SSPT conference! Thank you for the gig recommendation, it was a lot of fun (and welcome distraction after my paper kinda bombed...), and the, erm, less appealing 'Paradise City' night afterwards offered good opportunity to have a useful relatively early night. You have a very nice town down there, the little of it I saw, I look forward to visiting again but with a less packed schedule.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Monday, 20 June 2011 13:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm going to a Japanese theatre on Sunday night but hey it might finish in time to run to see the Hard-Ons afterwards! I think I'm going to be at the Prince Albert on Saturday night for Stay Sick/Dirty Water club night, so at least I'll know where it is.

two months pass...

If anyone's at a loose end tomorrow I'm going to be DJing at the West Hill pub from about 11. The night is a mix of stuff, but I'm concentrating on German and Japanese music as I'm thinking of starting my own night dedicated purely to that (this is a test to see if it works).

Or... our indiepop night is having a relaunch at Sticky Mike's Frog Bar (formerly Jam) on Friday 9th September. We need to double the clientele we were getting at Tom's Pissy Stench Sex Dungeon to make it work at the new place, so if you have even a passing interest please come down.

emil.y, Thursday, 25 August 2011 23:59 (twelve years ago) link

Good luck w/ those!

Did you go and see Ensemble Economique @ Outer Church btw? Was pissed off to have missed that, really loved that album.

NickB, Friday, 26 August 2011 00:07 (twelve years ago) link

Not able to tempt you? ;_;

But no, me and the mister missed that Outer Church edition as we were in London seeing R. Stevie Moore that night. Did get back in time for after-show drinks though, heh.

emil.y, Friday, 26 August 2011 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

R Stevie Moore - now there's someone whose name I've been seeing *forever* but still don't know shit about. Any good?

Would be into your Germanic Japanic thing but I got plans!

Yes, he's amazing. Pretty old now but still kicks ass.

That's a bummer we're going to be in Brighton on the 10th Sept :(

I think I freaked emil.y out at the R. Stevie Moore show, but then I guess it would be a bit traumatising having someone come up and say "Hi, I'm Colonel Poo" to you.

I guess it would be a bit traumatising having someone come up and say "Hi, I'm Colonel Poo" to you.

Your name must cause you problems in all kinds of situations.
"Come in for your job interview Mr, er,....Poo"
"It's Colonel, actually."
"Right. Well, I think we've heard enough."

My heart goes out to the people of platitudes (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 28 August 2011 11:20 (twelve years ago) link

Haha, I wasn't freaked out, just a bit distracted and then we had to miss the very end to run for trains so didn't get a chance to catch up after. A crowded venue is often not the best place to have a conversation, sadly. I did like the fact that you looked quite embarrassed as you introduced yourself.

Just a bump in case anyone can make it - our night is at Sticky Mike's (formerly Jam) tonight (Friday), 11pm-3am.

emil.y, Thursday, 8 September 2011 23:29 (twelve years ago) link

Nice to discover this thread. I lived in Brighton from 2000 to 2006 and do miss the place. Anyone else remember the Gilded Palace of Sin gigs put on by Dave, the former head honcho at Rounder?

I remember having a chat with him about Americana after going in to buy The Sunset Tree. Not sure I ever attended any of his shows but definitely went to some (probably at C2) where he was DJing.

I'm in Brighton tomorrow to Tues morning (just to get out of London/away from work for a bit). Anything going on? Pity I can't make emil.y's club night tonight!

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Friday, 9 September 2011 14:11 (twelve years ago) link

Not as far as I know - am planning my hangover in advance, though, so haven't been looking for myself. A couple of friends are DJing in pubs, but I'm guessing neither of those would be 'event' enough for a visitor. Default position would be Green Door Store near the station, the club nights are always free and it's open until 4am, so it's usually worth a punt, though it can have long queues and the music isn't always brilliant. Totally depends on what the night is, though. If you're here until Tuesday you might want to go to Metal Monday there! \m/^__^\m/

Checked this site: http://www.brightonnoise.co.uk/#gig-guide

Looks like only thing on that we might be interested in is Deadbeat Descendant at the Prince Albert tonight. Never heard of them but samples on their myspace sound alright.

n/m lots of time for browsing all the second hand stores in the Laines and general lounging.

I ran away again, sorry. Really was on the hunt for a good Bloody Mary to ease my befuddling hangover, you're not actually that scary, honest. Heartily recommend the Globe - very spicy and comes with celery stick and cherry tomato. Just bought ingredients to make Fisu at home, oh dear oh dear oh dear.

Any Brighton types up to fun stuff at the moment?

We're putting on a gig on Tuesday night at the Green Door - Orca Team (c86 surf?), Joanna Gruesome (noisy nugaze?) and Edible Arrangements (lo-fi dronestomp?). Also got another club night coming up on the 3rd August.

Joanna Gruesome!

Is that an exclamation b/c you like them, or is it merely a "meine gott, their name" reaction?

Should also rep for the Riots Not Diets Summer Series, all at the Green Door Store too:

11th july = GO SAILOR, The Smittens, Fulhast, A Fine Day For Sailing
£6 otd, or here
http://www.wegottickets.com/event/168184

16th July= Las Kellies, Skinny Girl Diet, Kins
£6 otd, or here -> http://www.wegottickets.com/event/170051

28th July = The Nuns, Summer Hunter, King Alfred Man Of Leisure
£6 otd or here -> http://www.wegottickets.com/event/161437

Will be wearing myself out and severely lowering my immune system at all of these.

Yeah, I don't know the band but their name ist ganz gut

Actually, I don't know any of these bands AT ALL

gonna send him to outer space, to hug another face (NickB), Thursday, 28 June 2012 16:13 (eleven years ago) link

Go Sailor = Rose Melberg & Amy Linton's super awesome oldschool indiepop band. Yes, a reformation, but one I'm a lot more excited by than most.

Las Kellies = Argentinian grrl garage

The Nuns = all-female Monks tribute act, featuring Delia from Mambo Taxi/Action Time/Actionettes/The Family Way/a million other great bands.

emil.y, Thursday, 28 June 2012 16:27 (eleven years ago) link

Also featuring my friend Charley, formerly of rock band Gay Dad! And the miiiighty Debbie Smith!

Smittens = apparently quite twee, though you could probably guess that from the fact that they're called the Smittens.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 28 June 2012 16:34 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, the Smittens are pretty ace queercore tweepop.

oops i was just about to ask for brighton tips as i planned on coming down for a conference, but now i see that i marked it down wrong in my calendar by TWO MONTHS and it's long gone. d'oh. but i'd like to come down anyway, anything ~big~ (ish) happening music-wise over the summer?

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 28 June 2012 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

Had meant to see what was happening in Brighton last week as my partner was over for the Domitor conference, but didn't get a chance to get away from all the panorama/magic lantern show/early cinema screenings in the evenings to catch a gig.

etc, Friday, 29 June 2012 07:02 (eleven years ago) link

came here to post about that! it sucks :(

Gah, that's bad. Remember when Dave of the shop used to put on Americana nights under the banner The Gilded Palace of Sin. Great evenings.

Will be interesting to see how Resident in the North Laine weathers the storm.

I'm assuming their business will go up in the short term, especially on the ticket sales side of things

Yeah, plus it seems to be a neater and, dare I say it, trendier shop than Rounder. I suspect a lot of Brighton bohos never venture beyond the North Laine to do their shopping and would never be seen dead in the Lanes. I'm sure it will thrive
