okay, i had no idea paxton had anything to do with fish heads. this just isn't fair to pullman anymore.

so far the argument for pullman, afaic
the sax shit in Lost highway
he was funny in ruthless people
he stood next to some funny people in spaceballs
young boys twirled around him in newsies
he got through a bad speech in ID4
he got through a bad scene in Sleepless in Seattle
i also believe he's done some theater

this against the director of both Fish Heads and Frailty, who has been murdered by a terminator, alien and predator, and played the most bad-ass vampire in the most bad-ass vampire movie. plus he's played the lead in a bunch of solid b movies, supreme goofballs in weird science and the dark backward, "coconut pete" in a broken lizard movie, managed to hold his own against three wives for a handful of seasons on HBO, yeah c'mon people.

Near Dark by itself makes Paxton the winner, not to mention Alien, but ever since that Greil Marcus shit I've been a pretty big Pullman defender, like he seemed really hurt and confused about his American berserk face.

^^ was said to me in response to my Paxton diss in the HBO thread that helped inspire this thread and uh...it's more or less right since the only one of those i've seen is A Simple Plan, which i liked but don't necessarily think rested on Paxton's shoulders.

Spaceballs is probably doing a lot of the heavy lifting in my preference for Pullman, and i love Zero Effect if not so much for his performance

fun fact of no relevance whatsoever: Bill Paxton played Wyatt Earp's brother in Tombstone the year before Bill Pullman played Bat Masterson's brother in Wyatt Earp

Pullman's such a dullard, I don't know what he's really good for, aside from maybe being like the poor man's Michael Douglas, in the same way that Charlie Sheen used to be the poor man's Tom Cruise. (Except that Sheen was always BETTER than Cruise, even back in the days when Tom was the crazy one.)

Paxton, though - classic alone for the bits in Aliens when he goes all sissy. And for being dosed with angel dust while filming Titanic.

watched "dead alive," which might be the only movie with pullman and paxton, with some chilx pals on saturday. pullman is definitely the star, but paxton has some substantial scenes, and it's kind of archetypical roles for both - pullman is nerdy and nervous, paxton is brash and swarmy. great movie if you haven't seen it, also has a creepy bud cort in a big role.

Pullman is aloof, arch, it almost always comes across to me like "I can't really act" acting which is fine, of course, but it doesn't work for me in his case. Paxton does the opposite really, or tries to, and it works for me. But maybe that's just cos I find him hot.

Well, bummer news indeed about Paxton. What a sad way to pass as well, after complications from surgery. He made a mark for sure.

Oh no! I just listened to Dean Delray's* interview with him last week and was starting to work my way through his roles. Damn, what a bummer.

*It was amazing because it felt like Delray had finally found a guest who actually complimented his (often distracting) voice.
