If we all worked with drunk Liz Hurley do you think we'd be on this thread complaining?

boxall, Friday, 8 July 2011 21:25 (twelve years ago) link

Had a work BBQ last night, got a bit tipsy and told a few people i thought they were a little rude for blanking me in the office, they seemed horrified and apologized. Now I feel bad for mentioning it.

Thought I'd check this thread and see if someone had put "who the hell does the new guy think he is, getting drunk and telling me I'm rude"

Should be interesting in a couple of hours when I get to work :/

not_goodwin, Friday, 15 July 2011 06:19 (twelve years ago) link

This is why I cant bring myself to get drunk in front of (at least my current) workmates, ha. I run off at the mouth so easy when Ive had a few :(

Bloompsday (Trayce), Friday, 15 July 2011 06:21 (twelve years ago) link

I must add, none of them are annoying yet.

not_goodwin, Friday, 15 July 2011 07:04 (twelve years ago) link

I don't even understand how popcorn is appealing when its nearly 100 degrees outside.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 13:58 (twelve years ago) link

manager in email: "hi everyone, we've just pushed payroll day forward a day!"

... thanks for advising us of this THE DAY BEFORE PAYDAY. Now I have to stretch to an extra day with zero spare cash :(

Bloompsday (Trayce), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 00:41 (twelve years ago) link

wouldn't 'forward' mean earlier?

my ex once had her bosses change salary payment from fortnightly in advance to fortnightly in arrears THE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

koogs, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 06:59 (twelve years ago) link

I meant forward in the week sense, so Friday instead of Thurs. But yeah ugh.

Bloompsday (Trayce), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 07:03 (twelve years ago) link

Just one day... wait, just four hours, without the stench of nasty burnt popcorn would be fucking amazing.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 14:26 (twelve years ago) link

I am appalled at this waste of precious resources, money is tight and here is some spoiled person demanding reimbursements on, like, McDonald's milkshakes and the like, also academic conferences for personal enrichment that are not work-related.

Just because her old boss apparently had money to burn doesn't mean she can demand this shit here. You want lunch, save money, eat in the food court.

YO MAMA. (Mount Cleaners), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 14:35 (twelve years ago) link

That sounds ridiculous. But, wait, your lunches get reimbursed?

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 14:39 (twelve years ago) link

If we're on conference for work or going on a business trip / meeting, all lunches / dinners - even alcoholic drinks - are reimbursed. That is generous enough.

However some people try to scam free lunches in the name of "professional enhancement"...excuse me that is your personal enhancement, it's not in the interests of your employer.

YO MAMA. (Mount Cleaners), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

Gotcha. I'm with you, surprised they even reimburse alcohol, that is pretty generous.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 15:21 (twelve years ago) link

sorta makes sense - you can write booze off if it's to entertain clients.

(thank you gov't of Canada for my partially subsidized scotch collection)

Yeah, they even serve beer and wine in house but only after four o'clock. Who can say no to free beer and wine? I'm surprised some religious teetotaller doesn't sue!

I usually don't indulge though, I am one of the more conservative people in the office and am always worried word will get out that I got drunk at work.

YO MAMA. (Mount Cleaners), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 15:39 (twelve years ago) link

Okay popcorn girl is talking, loudly, about going to a comedy show last night and this phrase verbatim came out of her mouth, "I had no idea what to expect at a comedy show". It was really really difficult to hold back on that one.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 18:58 (twelve years ago) link

she's kind of really opening herself up there.

are you just jealous you don't get to go to conferences?
xpost

tehresa, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

also can you please define how going to a conference is personal enhancement?

tehresa, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

i mean, it's not like she's going out to get a mani/pedi

tehresa, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

That popcorn lady is seriously gonna get cancer.

Bloompsday (Trayce), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 23:19 (twelve years ago) link

Actually going to an academic conference can be personal career enhancement, lots of people submit a request for reimbursement for this just to see if they can get it past accounting.

YO MAMA. (Mount Cleaners), Thursday, 21 July 2011 01:07 (twelve years ago) link

I have no problem with the conference itself being reimbursed and maybe the travel, depending on just how tied in it is to your position and direct work, but if the conference is already kind of a stretch as to being directly applicable, I can totally understand why a company might not want to pay for all the food and drinks while you are there.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 21 July 2011 01:31 (twelve years ago) link

jon, do you think one day you'll explode at her?

Mark C, Thursday, 21 July 2011 11:13 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not the exploding type, just the type to vent my frustrations to the world. I am getting really sick of my workspace smelling like burnt popcorn every day all day though. She's on her second bag of the morning, she had five bags yesterday.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 15:24 (twelve years ago) link

This is a noob question I'm sure, but how is she burning it? Could you gently suggest cooking it for a shorter time will make it taste nicer?

an excellent source of vitamins and minerals (WmC), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

Time for direct action, can you show up at work really early, say four or five in the morning and just, like, break the microwave?

At my last place of employment, this would have been my first thought - the boss entrusted me with a set of master keys that could open shared spaces like the lunchroom and conference rooms! Scary having that kind of power.

Indie Pop: Intelligent People's Music (Mount Cleaners), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:04 (twelve years ago) link

Also, why doesn't she just pop all of her popcorn the day before and bring it into the office? I keep cold popcorn around the house, I actually like the taste better once it has cooled off!

Indie Pop: Intelligent People's Music (Mount Cleaners), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:06 (twelve years ago) link

The reason I don't say anything is that people have been confronting her about since I started working here a year ago and she shrugs it all off. Granted, no one has explicitly asked her to stop popping it completely, but plenty of others have expressed their displeasure and annoyance. Her tyipcal response is that, "well, then no one should be allowed to cook anything in the microwave". Basically I'm just not sure if its a battle worth fighting at this point.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:09 (twelve years ago) link

Jeez, where is your microwave in relation to the rest of the workforce? I keep imagining my own workspace, where there is some food smell but it's usually take-out and smells good.

You know, one diplomatic solution to this is to envision a re-design where no one is distracted by food cooked in a microwave. Of course there will be the usual red tape...

Indie Pop: Intelligent People's Music (Mount Cleaners), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:14 (twelve years ago) link

how do you burn something in a microwave anyway?

Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:19 (twelve years ago) link

The microwave is off in a separate break room area, but there is no door so its effectively open to the rest of the office. Also, being an architect's office, the entire suite has an open floor plan so the smell travels really easily. I get the worst of it because I sit at the closest work station to the break area.

xpost - by letting it cook too long, leaving it unattended

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

"well, then no one should be allowed to cook anything in the microwave".

Well, no one should be allowed to cook the same fragrant thing all day long, every day! Beyond the smell, it seems like it has to cut into her productivity to be constantly burning and eating popcorn.

weakness for Cinnabon; rampant heterosexuality (Je55e), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

OMG an architect's office has a break room with no door. When I was in school this would have been frowned upon. It's amazing what people aren't willing to spend money on! Your employer should accomodate your staff better, break rooms should be more private anyway. People have conversations and parties in them and stuff and you don't want to distract the staff.

Also I don't know how your workplace is but visitors and clients don't always want to walk into a scene where employees are stinking up the joint and stuffing their face with food!

At my old job we had a management that was more than willing to entertain new ideas....just that we didn't always have the money.

Indie Pop: Intelligent People's Music (Mount Cleaners), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

Seriously, I am all for direct action on this, you have suffered enough, fucking break the microwave. Take out the fuse, just incapacitate it and claim insanity, like in that film Falling Down.

Ray the Otter. (captain rosie), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

Hahahaha. I like that idea.

Now my rage is directed on the coworker that just accidentally moved an entire project folder into another location. I 100% believe that it was an accident, but I know have to spend all afternoon crawling through and making sure all of the xrefs in our drawings are still attached and properly referenced.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

Honestly I think you should consider breaking the microwave. If you can do it without getting caught and fired, do it.

weakness for Cinnabon; rampant heterosexuality (Je55e), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

Do it! Break it! For all of us.

Ray the Otter. (captain rosie), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 21:00 (twelve years ago) link

jon, someone in my office totally scorched a bag yesterday - way down the hall from me, but oh how that stuff reeks - and I immediately had the fear that your co-worker had relocated. Seriously, disable the microwave; it's got to be so coated with burnt stink that anything cooked in it is going to pick it up and activate the smell.
