that lot are doing a performance

definite gap in market for MBP 13": it sits in the space the white macbook's just vacated, and it's a much more powerful machine. tried the 11" air and it couldn't handle streamed content from vimeo HD seamlessly. bit disappointing, so might plump for the 13" MBP instead

went to the apple store and played around with one, streamed HD stuff from video just fine? also played a 1080p movie trailer I downloaded from the apple movie trailers site, was okay.

v tempted

I've decided to ditch the mouse and home and use a magic track pad exclusively. I'm pretty happy with it. Seems more elegant than constantly dragging a mouse over my desk.

Jeff, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 21:38 (twelve years ago) link

when I get my office space set up again, I'm thinking of supplementing my mouse with one

mh, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 21:41 (twelve years ago) link

so much love for my magic trackpad

ILX Point Never (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 22:15 (twelve years ago) link

magic trackpad was slightly hell for me as i intended to sit it on the floor, where i sit in front of my tv (connected to mac). my floor is crooked and the boards uneven, but i guess mousing would have been straight up impossible. now i have a coffee table.

fields of salmon, Thursday, 4 August 2011 00:10 (twelve years ago) link

I want a magic trackpad

yes, all kinds of new tones. But this is a feature you don't hear.

Anyone know if there'll be a new iPod Classic in September?

groovypanda, Friday, 5 August 2011 15:54 (twelve years ago) link

No idea. I'm hoping there's at least one equivalent ipod because I want to replace my 120 GB classic and there's no way in hell I'm stepping down in capacity.

Gary Barlow syndrome (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 5 August 2011 23:22 (twelve years ago) link

really want a 64gb touch, sept. will very tempting.. but damn i can do a lot with $400

Nhex, Friday, 5 August 2011 23:41 (twelve years ago) link

I'm going to grab the next phone asap. Fine with having a 32gb portable music/video collection for now, 64gb even better. No way I could fit a reasonable fraction of my home collection on either.

iwork or m$ (lol) office?

Once Were Moderators (DG), Sunday, 21 August 2011 23:29 (twelve years ago) link

office

ceci n'est pas une witty dn (Schlafsack), Sunday, 21 August 2011 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

do you work with other ppl? then office I imagine

if it's just for yrself, then w/e prob

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Sunday, 21 August 2011 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

iWork is not a patch on Office 2011. It's just not. If you want to whip up quick docs with tables, images etc, iWork is cheaper and you can buy just the module you want. If you want to do anything even slightly complicated, Office.

ceci n'est pas une witty dn (Schlafsack), Sunday, 21 August 2011 23:33 (twelve years ago) link

effing m$, no escape it seems

Once Were Moderators (DG), Sunday, 21 August 2011 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

Ah look, Office is a good product and has led its field since Word for Windows, and there's no talking paper clip anymore so

ceci n'est pas une witty dn (Schlafsack), Sunday, 21 August 2011 23:39 (twelve years ago) link

i suppose word was originally a mac product...

i liked clippy :(

Once Were Moderators (DG), Sunday, 21 August 2011 23:43 (twelve years ago) link

fwiw I do use Pages if I want to knock up some quick revision notes, letters of resignation etc., mainly because it integrates properly with the OS and so is slightly easier to handle. iwork for the ipad is garbage btw.

ceci n'est pas une witty dn (Schlafsack), Sunday, 21 August 2011 23:46 (twelve years ago) link

i think it all comes down to spreadsheets: if you use them, then you need excel. i'm a novice with them, but numbers is some kind of fisher-price "my first spreadsheet" thing. for me, word is stupidly complicated now for a word processor, but incompetent as a desktop publishing program. pages hits a much better balance of getting out of the way and offering some easy to use layout tools where you might need them: if you can't do it in pages, you want indesign not word.

joe, Sunday, 21 August 2011 23:54 (twelve years ago) link

Not necessarily. For years I've worked with complex docs for which InDesign would be overkill, but Pages couldn't get there in a pink fit.

ceci n'est pas une witty dn (Schlafsack), Monday, 22 August 2011 00:00 (twelve years ago) link

if yr working with complex documents you should be using TeX imo

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Monday, 22 August 2011 00:03 (twelve years ago) link

hell yes

I knew I was in deep when I wrote a love letter (to a woman, not to an equation, get your mind out of the gutter) in TeX.

Euler, Monday, 22 August 2011 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

i only learned about TeX from ilx and i think it sounds disgustingly savage. i want a world where i can lay out html in a WYSIWIG editor and have it turned into code, not where you have to use tags just to get your word processing documents to print fucking italics.

joe, Monday, 22 August 2011 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

I write most things in Apple TextEdit or Google Docs. I had Neo Office because I was tired of the busted up ancient version of cracked Office I had. Then through my company I got the full latest Office for Mac for 19 dollars, so I couldn't pass that up. But I generally write in TextEdit or Docs and do all my formatting in InDesign.

Hey I got mine for $10. 2 licenses too. Crazy. Seriously still don't know why.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Monday, 22 August 2011 04:40 (twelve years ago) link

Seems that a cheaper 8GB iPhone 4 is extremely imminent.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 08:09 (twelve years ago) link

t-mobile just gave me a brand-new one for free; maybe they will start paying people to use them?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 11:05 (twelve years ago) link

so yeah, went for office in the end. installed it, it asked for an update, i agreed, end result = complete system hang, had to switch it off, thx m$

still, the box is nice, dunno why the rest of microsoft don't 'get' how to do nice things

Once Were Moderators (DG), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

Too many directions. I think the mac office team is still relatively small, has a lot of in-team visibility, and actually has goals for specific releases.

From everything I've heard from people who have worked there in some capacity, every other team is kind of a mess.

got a 11" mba but kind of having second thoughts, the text is so small on these things!

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 00:14 (twelve years ago) link

Can you not make the text bigger? (soz if that's an obvious response)

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I just did and it helps. feel like it'll take a day or two for me to 'mentally adjust' even though the text is prob as big as it is on my mbp

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 00:30 (twelve years ago) link

I love our mba11.

i don't know, tagging for layout was what I liked about Word Perfect.

cant wait for my 17" mba
