it appears there were these two gentlemen and one of these gentlemen was a horse and the other gentlmen was a woman working at a public house. now this first gentlemen, who was a horse, walks into the public house and greets the other gentlemen. and this second gentlemen enquires of the first "Why the long face?"

Is it possible to prove the bestness of lard?

Jaq (who is not a balding Frenchman) (Jaq), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:46 (eighteen years ago) link

This is so not going to be safe for vegetarians, is it?

Sigh.

Win A Lie-Down, Mrs. Davies (kate), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Its certainly not safe for fruit.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Some friends of mine in the US once conducted a 'which is the best brown soda?' experiment that I think would bear updating with a similar sampling of the UK market. They took into account all the usual taste-related factors as well as value-for-money.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:52 (eighteen years ago) link

This might just be the greatest day EVER!

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Thursday, 18 August 2005 16:11 (eighteen years ago) link

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 August 2005 17:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Get lots of bottle of fizzy pop. Shake them lots and lots and lots. Then open them and see which one is fizziest. I don't know how to do this, but I you could graph fizz power on some sort of volume evacuated/speed science.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 18 August 2005 22:28 (eighteen years ago) link

ii. bake a cake w. avocado instead of butter

i've had one of these!! two weeks ago i had an avocado and raspberry cake. it was really, really nice.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 19 August 2005 06:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I think there will definately be some sort of fizzy pop/soda showdown.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Duck in chocolate orange, please.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 26 August 2005 14:02 (eighteen years ago) link

We'll be doubly blinding people as a matter of course.

As a matter of main course. I was very convinced by Porkpie's method for the duck a la chocolate orange anyway.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 26 August 2005 14:04 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm happy to be the subject of the experiement to find out how many pieces of fried chicken, bought by ilx0rs, can a chinese boy of age 25 eat

ken c (ken c), Friday, 26 August 2005 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

This is so not going to be safe for vegetarians, is it? sigh

you should perhaps suggest a vegetarian experiment!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 26 August 2005 15:05 (eighteen years ago) link

oh wait you'll be in reading anyway?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 26 August 2005 15:05 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm going to have trouble sourcing stuff for my secret bit as I'm having to scrub my Borough market trip :o(

Projects a nd b should be ok though, that's just chocolate (pete - were you getting the stuff for D a l C-O??)

Porkpie (porkpie), Friday, 26 August 2005 15:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Having been given full details of the culinary Frankenstein's monster due to be unleashed today I'm slightly relieved I'm not able to make this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 28 August 2005 11:24 (eighteen years ago) link

How can I get to Peckham in half an hour from deepest Renfrewshire, then? This sounds teh aceness. I shall conduct an experiment to see how drunk I can get on only four alkyholic beverages this afternoon - I take it bouze science is acceptable? (I have a voucher for four free drinks from my local hostelry and no real money).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 28 August 2005 11:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I gather bouze science is also planned. The results will be horrific.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 28 August 2005 17:03 (eighteen years ago) link

The results of four free drinks were not horrific. Therefore it has been proven BY SCIENCE that I am a big old alky and I need lots of booze to be drunk.

Actually I only had three. And I'm sure they were watered down.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 28 August 2005 17:09 (eighteen years ago) link

I had to leave early as I have work tomorrow, but there was some serious science being thrown down.

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 28 August 2005 18:41 (eighteen years ago) link

A scientific triumph, even if the really dangerous bouze science was not attempted.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 29 August 2005 08:09 (eighteen years ago) link

There's nothing there yet, because we don't have the pictures yet, but tomorrow to Friday will be FOOD SPECIAL on FT with the reports from food science day, photos, food-related MP3s and other things about food.

Sorry. So how did this go, huh?

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 07:09 (eighteen years ago) link

There was a surprise winner in the fruit aerodynamics experiment. Also, a classic Pete lie turned out to be true.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:15 (eighteen years ago) link

oi! no do not break bear's legs! bluddy hell. apparently i got double flying kicked, how did i not fall over? the redhead pain thing perhaps. i do have one lovely bruise on my arm, but i think that's from wearing the cage rather than being beaten up.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 11:00 (eighteen years ago) link

(You narrowly avoided being on the guest list tonight as "Emma the Bear" because that is how Ver Stooges know you!)

Cor that pineapple took a beating!

And please tell me that is some attempt at a pie pie? Or is it some sort of cake experiment?

Sing the theme to Moonraker. Go on, have a go. You can't, can you? No one can.

-- Michael Jones (tourajsig...), August 30th, 2005. (MichaelJ) (later)

Moonraker, wider than a mile,
I'm crossing you in style some day.
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker,
wherever you're going I'm going your way.
Two drifters off to see the world.
There's such a lot of world to see.
We're after the same rainbow's end--
waiting 'round the bend,
my huckleberry friend,
Moonraker and me.

-- n/a (nu...), August 30th, 2005. (Nick A.) (later)

TEN HOUR MEETING has prevented me contributing to FSD today. And will tomorrow probably. But on Thursday the results of the Red/White/Rose cocktail challenge will SHOCK AND STUN the scientific world.
