Long piece about the "Paradigms of Human Memory" episode. Maybe I missed it, but the writer doesn't seem to mention that it's a parody of sit-com clip episodes.

tbh it got very boring very fast so i didn't read it

tbh though i'm glad there are people like this who love the show even though it's going completely over their heads, that demographic is probably the one keeping them on the air
― some dude, Friday, 26 August 2011 14:11 (twelve years ago) link
I know about bottle episodes only because Community did one earlier this season, in a show called "Cooperative Calligraphy."
basically this guy needed Abed to say "OK, we're doing a clip show" at the beginning of the episode for him to get it

― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 26 August 2011 14:20 (twelve years ago) link
He kind of acknowledges the "this never happened bit" later on, but kudos for managing to read that far, I only came across it by skimming:
"Oh, the deputy's badge from when we spent the day in that old ghost town," he says. This is a key moment, because we're sure the group never did spend a day in a ghost town in any of the previous episodes, and it didn't plausibly happen in any case.

im not sure who that kind of article is meant for. it's too entry-level for people who have seen the show. we don't need him to describe the cast. but it's too long and boring for anyone who hasn't seen it. or anyone who has.
― some jock-bully out to take down the hipsters (history mayne), Friday, 26 August 2011 14:24 (twelve years ago) link
The Clerks tv show would really blow this guy's mind, since the 2nd episode was a clip show.
― President Keyes, Friday, 26 August 2011 14:35 (twelve years ago) link
im not sure who that kind of article is meant for.
For people who don't watch sitcoms but will check it out now that someone has deemed it the most smartest of all.
― President Keyes, Friday, 26 August 2011 14:41 (twelve years ago) link
stupid article but if it keeps the show alive for a 4th season i can't complain
― Mordy, Friday, 26 August 2011 14:48 (twelve years ago) link

does anyone have an email addy for slate's editors? have a pitch for them about parks and rec.
sometimes you r pretty obtuse. do u think maybe slate's reading audience might bring better numbers to the show and help it stick around longer if slate keeps writing fawning articles about it?
― Mordy, Friday, 26 August 2011 14:54 (twelve years ago) link
Slate is the weirdest site. They have a Culture Gabfest podcast where like 2 weeks ago they first discovered this show called "Breaking Bad".
― President Keyes, Friday, 26 August 2011 14:55 (twelve years ago) link
Culture Gabfest is a horrendous joke. I listen to it on occasion out of a masochistic urge to hear middle-class idiots try to reconcile what is popular with their limited understanding of culture.

the Clerks animated show is probably the best Kevin Smith project released and that second episode is why; it basically does the exact same thing as the "Community" episode
it's also probably a large reason as to why there are only 6 episodes of Clerks, lol
― now I have to imagine your penis (DJP), Friday, 26 August 2011 15:15 (twelve years ago) link
except that it did flash back to a clip from the first episode every time iirc?
― rude ragga beats from the F. U. Schnickens (sic), Friday, 26 August 2011 16:29 (twelve years ago) link
Clerks was canceled after that 2nd episode. The other 4 came out on DVD later.
― President Keyes, Friday, 26 August 2011 17:26 (twelve years ago) link
Also, ABC only aired episodes #4 and 2, so the flashbacks to Ep. #1 didn't make any sense--or perhaps functioned as the Community flashbacks did.

season 2 dvd is out! i put it in my netflix queue, and noticed that the capsule description of the show calls Abed "a film student with Asperger's." the show's never officially diagnosed him, has it?
― some dude, Saturday, 10 September 2011 16:53 (twelve years ago) link
no and that description is annoying

― j., Saturday, 10 September 2011 17:46 (twelve years ago) link
Abed is deliberately 90 deg out if phase with everyone else, and with the show as a written creation.
I think Dan's addiction to TVTropes might feed into this.
― Blind Diode Jefferson (kingfish), Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:02 (twelve years ago) link
IIRC, in one of the early episodes, Jeff answered something Abed said with "...and you have Asperger's", which was the most blatent reference, although (grain of salt ready) the line is more about Jeff being a dick than whatever it is that makes Abed Abed.
― Status Update...in my Seether? (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:16 (twelve years ago) link
yeah, early on they obv intended Abed to be strictly aspie, then pulled back from this, eg "Abed The Undiagnosable"
― challopian rubes (sic), Sunday, 11 September 2011 00:07 (twelve years ago) link
yeah they definitely tiptoe around it and make a show of not pinning him down to anything like that -- Big Bang Theory walks that line even more precariously with Sheldon
― some dude, Sunday, 11 September 2011 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

Felt off, airless, a bit too predictable. Did Cougartown really need to be a continuing thing? Would prefer it if they just moved moved moved.
Did like the Doctor Who bit, though.

I hope that's the last show for a while where the group analyzes its own dynamic. I thought it was a good episode, but that topic is stale.

hopefully pierce being back in the group means an end to the in-fighting plotlines, because that was old last season. less yelling, more zings!
but still some quality stuff tonight. i liked shirley quietly suggesting they use abed's catatonia as a chance to baptize him.
