i don't even know what it is!!

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:19 (twelve years ago) link

it means no matter how pixel-dense the display, text and graphics just scale appropriately. eg the iPhone 4 has 4x as many pixels as the iPhone 3, but everything is the same size - just smooooth.

unfortunately, resolution independence is not a trivial matter of just making sure you have a bunch of vector icons.

lukas, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

ohhhhhh

so for example my vision-challenged mom could scale up the size of everything and it wouldn't look chunky and stupid?? nice and pretty, just bigger?

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

yeah that's the ideal

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

tho it looks like everyone else wants it for insanely-high-rez photo/video while maintaining usably sized icons/menus etc

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:26 (twelve years ago) link

would also be great for asian markets - imo the default font size of asian text is too small on ANY mac desktop or laptop

[racist joke]

Am I the only one bummed out by how loud the fan(s) in the new Air is/are?

Bryan, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:09 (twelve years ago) link

which is the quietest air? I thought the new ones might be fanless like ipads.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:26 (twelve years ago) link

when's the next apple event

would it be possible to have cryogenic computing, where the signals cool down the transmission medium somehow

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

breaking some laws of thermodynamics is one way for tim cook to proclaim a new master's in the house.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

The new ones have hotter processors so the fan kicks in early. Kinda seems too early sometimes. The thing will barely feel warm and the fan will start running.

Bryan, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

how is that a "law of thermodynamics"?

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

I bow to mr. journey to baja's scientific rigor

newton postulated you can't keep drinks cool on a quake server, inspired by drunken match between him and leibniz.

full screen mode helps, wish chrome would hurry up and implement it natively.

Chrome Canary does it

i boosted my terminal font to 11pt a couple of months ago. so sad. menlo is great though.

caek, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

They've scrapped resolution independence on the old model. The new model is the same as the iPhone's -- double or nothing.

If you have the latest Xcode you can flick the MBA into hires mode. Looks great, but it's basically 800x400 like some Toshiba palmtop of yore

stet, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 23:27 (twelve years ago) link

caek what % of your time on a mac is spent in terminal

dayo, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 23:59 (twelve years ago) link

#! %

caek, Thursday, 1 September 2011 09:06 (twelve years ago) link

nah when i'm working (not the same thing as when i'm at work!), i guess it's about 60% if you count vi (the rest is email).

3yo ipod battery (classic 120 Gb) is starting to fade. Hoping against hope that Apple releases a 128 Gb nano or something similar. Perhaps I should just jump now and buy a 160 Gb classic.

caek i thought you did astronomy?

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 1 September 2011 23:48 (twelve years ago) link

aa, it's pretty easy to change the battery on an ipod classic. you can get them on ebay or whatevs.

yeah, i do astronomy. it's all unix all the time.

p.s. version control for people who do not do "To look at page I
send mail to a demon which runs wget and mails the page back to me.
It is very efficient use of my time, but it is slow in real time."

caek, Friday, 2 September 2011 12:33 (twelve years ago) link

I guess that's a good thing until programs support Apple's Versions API, right?

unwarranted display names of ilx (mh), Friday, 2 September 2011 13:58 (twelve years ago) link

right: what's the advantage over Versions? I use TexShop, whose latest version supports Versions.

Can it help with collaborators who aren't on Lion or don't use (the latest) TexShop or who don't have LayerVault installed?

what's the best way to throw content (potentially w/HD and subtitles) from a computer in one room to my main TV? is this what apple TV does? does it have limitations wrt file types (AVI, divx etc)? slingbox? boxee? cheap acer revo?

cozen, Saturday, 3 September 2011 12:57 (twelve years ago) link

apple tv is great but it's mp4/m4v/mov only - basically the iTunes formats. if you're torrenting, you'll usually need to convert them or use something else, but idk what the other options are like.

Ps3...

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Saturday, 3 September 2011 13:12 (twelve years ago) link

coz, use PS3 Media Server on your PC, it'll transcode the videos to your xbox/ps3

^^^^^ yes

I've heard good things about the recently-upgraded Roku 2, which is cheaper and arguably better than Apple TV. 1080p, USB input, and Bluetooth remote on top-of-range model; microSD slot and TV remote compatible on all versions.

Doesn't work well outside of North America though, too much content region-locked to US/Canada and Netflix, Hulu+, and Amazon channels haven't crossed the big pond yet from what I've read, but hopefully they're working on this.

i use popcorn hour, which plays everything. you can map a networked drive (or your computer) to it, or plug in a USB drive, or even install an HD in the case and copy video to it over a network. the nice thing about that is that my computer doesn't have to be on. it is a bit nerdy though - requires a bit of fiddling.

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 13:23 (twelve years ago) link

do macs have fixedsys (ah, mIRC)

dayo, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 14:37 (twelve years ago) link

iirc fixedsys is not a truetype font

mh, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 14:37 (twelve years ago) link

I've been using Panic Sans and Consolas intermittently, but I always end up back at Monaco. Monaco 10 is unreadably tiny on MBA tho
