I'm not gonna stick up for the quality journalism of People magazine but Elvis Costello = "bullshit for sad suburban sub-literates" at this point. he is well-known, he's a familiar face, he's been in Austin Powers, knocked up Diana Krall, is always doing middlebrow collabs, putting out albums for the generation that still buys CDs etc.

Add Lucinda Williams to the list of life's blessings that should be counted on the touching title track of her new album. Indeed, the singer-songwriter shows no signs of slowing the creative roll she has been on since 2007's West. Her latest, coproduced by Grammy winner Don Was, finds the tough-voiced Williams in a tender mood on ballads like the sweetly comforting "Born to Be Loved" and "Copenhagen," an elegy for her late manager. But another death-a friend's suicide-drives her into angry rocker mode on "Seeing Black," one of three cuts endowed with Elvis Costello on electric guitar.

Courtney Love on Dave Grohl: "As for that drummer, well, he's hit on me so many times. He's just a very very conflicted guy about me, which is why he continually writes songs about me to hear he ‘hates' me more than ‘anyone else.' Kurt loathed HIM more than anyone else (except a journalist) … He's just sub-mediocre kind of guy who does this ‘nice guy' nonsense."Dave Grohl on Courtney Love: "She's an ugly fucking bitch."
Courtney 1 Dave 0 on this one

the paul weller to freddie mercury one doesn't seem right to me. i seem to remember the story going that freddie mercury said in an interview with nme, which totally slated him, that he wanted to bring ballet to the masses. queen and the sex pistols were shortly afterwards recording in the same studio, sid vicious popped his head in and said "oy, freddie. you still bringing ballet to the masses" or something like that.

"Queen and The Sex Pistols were recording albums in London's West End when Sid Vicious wandered into the wrong studio to find Mercury alone at the piano. 'Ah, Freddie Mercury, still bringing ballet to the massses are you?' hissed Vicious. 'Oh yes, Mr Ferocious, dear,' Mercury bit back. 'We are doing our best.'
this is totally made up

maybe it's on tape -- they were in a recording studio
(i don't really believe it either: you see it routinely in queen and mercury biogs, but that doesn't make it true)

Yeah, it doesn't ring true does it. The actual quote from NME about bringing ballet to the masses is however verifiable.

I remember reading this article a while back, lolling and the quotes, and then seeing no. 1 was such out of place. for me, it's either Gallagher on Kaiser Chiefs, or MES on M&S. Grohl on Love looks hilarious too, but only in context of the Courtney's comment that preceedes it.
