Hairy Women
Premiere Special
11.05pm - 12am | Nine
(M) Entertainment Premiere

Body hair is a funny thing - we meet women who'll do anything to be rid of it, men who will stop at nothing for a glimpse of it, people who make a living ripping the stuff off in clumps so that other people can stick it back on again in lumps.

Hold on a sec, I want to add my story about meeting a lady in a fairly well known indie band from America who has a NECK BEARD.

OK, now you can carry on.

If it did then I have severely underestimated Australian television.

Madchen you didn't really finish yr story, I don't think.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 09:51 (twenty years ago) link

It's all in what you use to lubricate the razor. Nothing beats really good soap, either shaving soap or, what I use, the really excellent Dr Bronner's Liquid castille soap. (You have to persuade someone to bring it back from the states because it's rarely seen and very expensive when you do over here). Any really good soap will do, a good castille soap will lather even in London water. Cover your beard/stubble well. I suppose you could use a shaving bowl and brush but I just work a lather between my hands and rub it on.

I use a Mach 3 rasor and yes it is a close comfortable shave but that's not the best reason to use it. The best reason is is the fact that it's the only disposable razor blade you can effectively wash the soapy hairy crud out of.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 10:34 (twenty years ago) link

I mean I DO think, not that you'd notice going by that sentence

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 10:45 (twenty years ago) link

I wanna hear about the neck beard.

Mandee (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 11:10 (twenty years ago) link

Shaving sucks, always. Occasionally I have a decent shave, occasionally I have a crap, painful shave. It's seemingly random. I hate my manly testosterone!!

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 11:13 (twenty years ago) link

You don't really notice it until you get close up.

Mark, only *occasionally* do you have a crap?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 11:17 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, shaving is a pain in the neck. I use a Mach3 and I find that you can't really shave every day with it - it's not that good at shaving a day's growth, only when you've got a decent couple of day's growth to deal with. I use Clarins' 'Rasage Idéal' foaming gel and their 'Huile de Rasage' shave ease but I've started using King of Shaves' Alphagel which is pretty good. At my last flat there was no shower, so I used to shave after having a bath and half-an-hour of chin soaking certainly makes for a better shave.

Has anyone noticed, since the recent introduction of the Mach 4 and the Wilkinson Sword competition, that getting blades for existing razors is getting difficult? I bet they're deliberately holding the stock back so that people might decide to give a new razor a try.

When will we break the 3 blade barrier???

(nb - the schick quattro does not count as it's a rip-off and it sucks).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:41 (twenty years ago) link

also, I've found that in LA, if you don't shave for a few days and wear aviators, people think you're famous!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:42 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, shaving is a pain in the neck.

well, i supposed that SOMEONE was going to post this, sooner or later.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 21:11 (twenty years ago) link

Mach3 facts: 1) Gillette apparently spent $1 Billion on developping the razor
2) Mach3 blades are apparently the most shoplifted item in Europe

jadrenos (jadrenos), Thursday, 6 November 2003 10:41 (twenty years ago) link

i strongly recommend living in east london where one can get a bespoke cutthroat shave, including hot towels and a cup of stinking strong turkish coffee for the bargain price of £4!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:26 (twenty years ago) link

i normally need to shave most days but one of these lasts about 4 days, so i rarely shave myself now.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:27 (twenty years ago) link

if i do though, it's barbasol aloe vera shave foam, which i always bring back from the states with me, and a mach 3 turbo, though i am actually finding my grandad's old-fashioned safety razor pretty nice to use now and may switch completely soon.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:31 (twenty years ago) link

Taking the lead from certain Apple sites, I suggest we set up www.machrumors.com, where we can discuss possible product developments and updates from the ultra-secretive Gillette company. I'm predicting the Mach5 by the end of next year.

jadrenos (jadrenos), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:29 (twenty years ago) link

The answer, I think you will all find, is shaving oil. King of Shaves shaving oil rox, and gives a great shave with none of the mess. I shave both ways - first with the grain to get most of the beard off, then against to get it really close. Easy!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:52 (twenty years ago) link

What is this Mach4 nonsense? There's Mach 3. There's Mach 3 Turbo (woosh!) but Mach 4? It can't be done, he said...

does anyone else get ingrown hairs from the triple blade attack?

i've noticed it's becoming more of a problem. i had to buy some aftershave (odorless) to try and prevent the occasional ingrown hair proliferation but what do you know, after about a month without one, i find one today on my jaw line.

Superman used to shave by reflecting his heat vision with a curved piece of the Kryptonian ship that brought him to earth and burning off stubble.
Let me know when Gilette gets around to trying that out and I'll opt in.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, the keys to good (close and not uncomfortable) shaves are a) proper moisturizing of the hair and b) shaving the right direction in the right order.

If you cut yourself regularly (>50% of the time), you should switch something. Honestly.

I read somewhere that two blades (ie, the standard Bic disposable razors) are optimal - anything more shaves too and leads to razor burn and ingrown hairs.

I just shave by feel with hot water in the shower, no cream, no soap
around the beard, I touch up right afterwards with hot water over the sink

The beaver is not the bad guy (El Tomboto), Saturday, 21 January 2017 22:33 (seven years ago) link

i don't use a blade - just a peanut and i trim to a #1. what do u guys do to clean up all the hair (assuming you shave infrequently enough that there's a sizable amount). i grab a plastic bag, open it as wide as possible, place it in the sink and trim over it. inevitably lots of little hairs end up all over the place - in the sink, around the sink, etc and i have to spend 10-15 min finding them all to clean them up. surely there must be a better way! i once saw a clipper that advertised a hair collection feature so it left no mess but - get this - it didn't work at all.

Mordy, Saturday, 21 January 2017 22:35 (seven years ago) link

i stopped shaving.

trim once a week into sink and rinse sink.

trilby mouth (darraghmac), Saturday, 21 January 2017 23:38 (seven years ago) link

i stopped shaving when my first son was born bc it just took too much time and i always hated it anyway. my beard is too thick and dark for me to ever look clean-shaven, even immediately after a close shave I look like I have a 5 o'clock shadow.

now I use 1/8" guard on my hair clippers once every 3-4 weeks. I put some paper towels flat in the sink to catch the whiskers and then to wipe up other loose hairs after.

marcos, Sunday, 22 January 2017 00:13 (seven years ago) link

In the shower, with bath gel. The limit for marginal returns is reached with 3 blade heads, and the most important quality of a head is an open, unobstructed back so whiskers can be rinsed out in the spray between strokes. Basic Mach 3 is fine, but drug-store knockoffs are equally good. Used to like these slender two blade heads that could be turned to my advantage in nostrils, but now just play masochist with good tweezers.

this device is capable of killing you without warning (Sanpaku), Sunday, 22 January 2017 00:24 (seven years ago) link

what do u guys do to clean up all the hair

I shaved my beard ATW TFO this morning and my new 1 Weird Old Tip for this is to get your beard completely soaking wet first before taking the Peanut to it.
This makes the hair weigh more and clump together so it vastly, vastly decreases the amount and breadth of discrete scattered hairs.

clean yr razor with an old toothbrush after every shave obv

trilby mouth (darraghmac), Sunday, 22 January 2017 15:51 (seven years ago) link

Never heard of the peanut before.

I shave my head and beard from monday through thursday, then let it grow out over the weekend.

I use a Dorco Pace 6 with Aveeno moisturing lotion as a shaving cream in the shower. I wish there was a better combo though. There are always patches that I'm just unable to get on the first pass that I'll have to go over again once I've been out of the shower for a while and let the skin on my head calm down.

how's life, Sunday, 22 January 2017 15:56 (seven years ago) link

Shaving a head is obviously a completely different thing than face-shaving. My set-up works just fine for that part.

two weeks pass...

I trimmed as soon as I got out of the shower this morning, beard still soaking wet - basically got like 8 stray hairs on the edge of the sink, everything else stuck to the trimmer in clumps and went right into the drain. Easy.

SFTGFOP (El Tomboto), Sunday, 19 March 2017 22:25 (seven years ago) link

a few days later I had to go back in with the trimmer while it was dry because trimming wet creates pretty uneven results. However, I will say the mess left just evening things out was much less than usual and only a few strays escaped the sink. I think the TOMBOT TANDEM is the way to go from here on out.

five months pass...

I'm killing the beard tomorrow. It was super nice outside today, and while I was walking to the local fancy-stuff grocer and back, I noticed far too many carefully tended facial hair arrangements on the other dudes in my neighborhood, sitting outside at the various dining establishments. Fuck that. I'm done being part of a trend. Back to the once-a-week all-around stubble.
