mmmm... oogosh iced coffee with cream and sugar makes me weak in the knees
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:49 (sixteen years ago) link
iced coffee with just a touch of milk or cream for color is the best drink.
― Jordan, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:50 (sixteen years ago) link
but it's odd i can't have my hot coffee with sugar anymore! too syrupy. just milk. but the way you can taste the crystals when it's iced!
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:50 (sixteen years ago) link
i don't know it really competes with iced tea. which is ALSO delicious with some cream.
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:51 (sixteen years ago) link
i used to really enjoy the jumbo-sized iced coffee with milk & sugar but now the idea of the sucking down cold sugar & cream doesn't really sound refreshing at all. for the past few summers i've been drinking more iced tea than iced coffee.
anyway, the best places do this with frozen coffee cubes instead of ice.
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:01 (sixteen years ago) link
SO GOOD
i know, when it's like really hot out and you feel kinda gross, cold cream isn't always the best drink :)
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:04 (sixteen years ago) link
Clearly, LA is a shithole.
But we always have our iced coffee situation sorted.
― B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:14 (sixteen years ago) link
when did iced coffee become so popular, is what i wonder. it was never around when i was a kid, but sometime in the 90s it became a phenomenon
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:16 (sixteen years ago) link
people just LOVE it now. a summer staple
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:18 (sixteen years ago) link
i don't know if it was "around" but my parents made iced coffee when i was growing up
― n/a, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:37 (sixteen years ago) link
ie prior to the '90s
oh man i had quit coffee for almost a year but i am breaking edge TODAY with an iced coffee.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:38 (sixteen years ago) link
i am drinking it RIGHT NOWS
this begins my downward spiral back into caffeine addiction

Not one of the nasty ones out of a can? Would be wise to get a proper one before you write it off entirely?
― Ed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:15 (sixteen years ago) link
but it's odd i can't have my hot coffee with sugar anymore!
iced coffee is brewed double strength so that it isn't watered down when the ice melts, maybe this has something to do with it?
it was never around when i was a kid, but sometime in the 90s it became a phenomenon
it's been around forever, my dad used to make pitchers of it in the 70s and i know his father, who died just after i was born, was a huge fan.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago) link
well, yeah, some people have consumed coffee over ice for ages but just because certain people (none of my family did, fwiw) have done it doesn't mean it was a widespread consumer phenomenon. almost every place that regularly serves coffee these days usually has the iced stuff on hand in warmer weather
i credit / blame dunkin' donuts
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:35 (sixteen years ago) link
i recall my grandmother considered serving coffee iced to be an abomination, akin to serving ice cream hot
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:38 (sixteen years ago) link
i was gonna say, it was also always available at dunkin donuts forever. maybe it was a regional thing that expanded as people fled new england.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:39 (sixteen years ago) link
when i worked in a coffee shop, we didn't brew the coffee double strength and pour it over ice, we just chilled it in the cooler. but i've been to coffee shops that actually had ice MADE of coffee. which is awesome.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:39 (sixteen years ago) link
i get grossed out by the frozen coffee drinks -- like, how's that morning milkshake treating you, fatty?
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:42 (sixteen years ago) link
Surprised i didn't mention this up thread but the best iced coffee treat is the granita al caffe you get by the parthenon in rome. Little dark crystals of sweetened espresso ice with whipped cream. (Next best iced coffee was one I had in Shimla, the cream was so thick and lumpy)
― Ed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:44 (sixteen years ago) link
heh, kevin, maybe it's has to do with my maturation as a coffee drinker more than the general availability of the iced stuff
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:45 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah, a couple of shots of espresso does make an excellent addition to a milkshake though! also back in coffee shop days i would make my friends come in and drink my liquid ice cream experiments.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:48 (sixteen years ago) link
as far as milkshakes go, where coffee is great, kahluha is greater.
― Ed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link
no reason you can't have both.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:51 (sixteen years ago) link
that does sound really tasty, linds. there's a big difference to drinking frozen coffee drinks as if they were milkshakes than drinking them as if they were coffee, tho. it's the people who do the former, who i get enraged at (as proxies of my former fatty self, usually)
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:51 (sixteen years ago) link
er, i mean the latter
now i want coffee ice cream...
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:52 (sixteen years ago) link
Dunkin' Donuts French Vanilla iced coffee, with a little bit of sugar and a touch of cream... heaven. DD also has some seriously questionable iced coffee flavors tho... coconut, berry... feh.
― miryam, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:54 (sixteen years ago) link
DD's can be very questionable. i feel like their iced coffee can sometimes taste like meat.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:56 (sixteen years ago) link
Meat? I've never had that experience... I have had really horrible coffee from them in the past though, to the point where I've brought it back into the store.
― miryam, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:00 (sixteen years ago) link
LOL meat, ew. i just feel like my experience with their iced coffee has been that it's watered-down, but i've only had it once or twice
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:01 (sixteen years ago) link
i try not to go to DD anymore as they've changed a lot since they were bought by Baskin Robbins or whatever, they used to have flavored roasts but now they only use flavor shots, have scary microwaved neuvo cuisine, etc
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:07 (sixteen years ago) link
honestly i would not be surprised if there was HFCS in DD straight-up black coffee
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:09 (sixteen years ago) link
maybe it's just me with the meat thing. but for some reason a lot of not-so-fresh iced coffee tastes meat-like to me. i can't explain it.
dean & deluca's is never meaty. so that's my favorite to get on the way to work.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:09 (sixteen years ago) link
I can't remember a time when DD wasn't hella gross, like way too gross to eat or drink anything from.

― bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:15 (sixteen years ago) link
Our HS had a bakery (mom/pop, est. 1935) with the best doughnuts and blueberry muffins in Minneapolis right next door, so DD a real non-starter for me on that level; also I drink tea or cappuccinos but never, ever normal Americano coffee.
Dean and DeLuca used to do hot white chocolate, or white hot chocolate.
I would be super-pleased if they still sold this. The sachets were like $10 a pack in 1990.

weird! stevie is coming back to chicago four years later and i am here with an unrelated question
my question: i would like to make the sort of iced coffee concentrate that you let drip through something overnight -- maybe in a glass or plastic container? This is all the information I have about the type of iced coffee I am attempting to make because it can't be that hard -- i just don't have the proper apparatus or vocab required to search for it. i want to google it but i don't know the correct search terms.
ideas?
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:46 (five years ago) link
nmi got it bc my mr looked it up -- it's the "toddy cold brew system"
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:48 (five years ago) link
it's a cold toddy.
I only drink ice coffee all year round and just recently learned that this is a gay male "thing" (according to buzzfeed). I am really confused by that premise. Do gay men like cold drinks?
― Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:49 (five years ago) link
xpost. If you get a cold toddy just make sure you have everything really sealed up before you leave it overnight. I used to use one a lot and it's very annoying to wake up to a spill of half brewed coffee.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:50 (five years ago) link
Thank you!!
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:53 (five years ago) link
I looked it up and it is the toddy cold brew system that I have. It's fine. It uses a lot of coffee though. And it has a rubber plug in the bottom that you pull the morning after the grounds have been soaking. That plug is the thing you have to make sure is jammed in right or else it leaks. I think we just stopped using it because having a carafe of ice coffee around meant we were drinking that carafe in one go.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:58 (five years ago) link
good to knowi guess you can make a larger amount by just repeating the process until you have enough to fill the vessel you wish to fill?
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 17:59 (five years ago) link
if it is indeed this one https://www.amazon.com/Toddy-THM-Cold-Brew-System/dp/B0006H0JVW
it comes with that carafe that fits the same amount as in the toddy and supposedly it makes a concentrate that you are supposed to dilute with water but we never really diluted it and drank it straight.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:03 (five years ago) link
ah. another valuable fact! spouse received a large bottle of this stuff (as a concentrate) as a gift and from the size of the bottle it must have taken several batches. now i do not need to rely on anyone else to make it, i can do it myself. i was trying various cold brew ideas and wasting a bunch of coffee NOT making this specific type and now that i have the vital information of [thing used to make it] i can proceed.
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:07 (five years ago) link
I am sure you could rig up a similar contraption on your own. This is the filter that fits into the bottom if you could figure out a similar vessel, it's kind of all you really need.
https://toddycafe.com/shop-product/15/Toddy-Filters
― Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:11 (five years ago) link
ohhhh and I see they have paper filters now too.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:12 (five years ago) link
Yeah, it's always bothered me that the only important part of that 'system' is the really thick filter. Not that the whole thing is that expensive, but it seems like you could DIY it if you were so inclined.
I also drink mostly concentrate with a tiny bit of water for propriety's sake.
― change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:17 (five years ago) link
i tried and thought i could but the experiments were getting expensivemy goal was to make the stuff we had in the bottle, so i needed to know how that was done. my cheap a$$ was wasting coffee :(
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:17 (five years ago) link
i hate giving in to the gadget but i felt i had to this time
Yeah, it totally is easy to use. I think we've had two of them (they were located in different places) for about ten years now and you may need to replace filters or the rubber stopper every so often but that's it really.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:31 (five years ago) link
I got a growler of bourbon barrel cold brew as a gift, and it was so good that I've since refilled it a couple times (from a place in Milwaukee).

― goole, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 19:04 (five years ago) link
it isi tried to make regular cold brew and it was ok but just tastes like cold coffee, not particularly strong or flavorful
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 19:20 (five years ago) link
Idk y’all I make cold brew by like putting grounds and water in a jar, it works pretty good. If I were gonna get some apparatus I’d get one of those three foot high Japanese things that drips over the grounds drop by drop just to make it maximally impractical.
