Basically it was strongly implied there was a leaked prototype, that rumor made the rounds, and some cheap case manufacturers jumped on it. The people who make money by being first to market and aren't afraid of making the wrong product since they manufacture so cheaply, pretty much.

I mean all the people sitting at home expecting a whole new iphone despite the biennial precedent set by Apple's own release strategy (in line with phone contracts p much worldwide) and an overwhelming lack of evidence.

I mean yes I get that HTC, Samsung &c. are outdoing the iphone 4 but that never means Apple's resolve will weaken.

wtf are you talking about, the 3gs is great!

I am on the two year 3gs->4s rotation and am fine with that. I never felt particularly left out when I read what the 4 had, but it's definitely time for an upgrade.

The people who have a 4 and are whining that the 4s isn't worth an upgrade are... masochists?

btw I have no inclination whatsoever to replace my 4 with one of these things (unless iOS 5 slows it down to a crawl)

in the USA w/ an unlocked iPhone, are there carriers with which you can get the barest minimum of minutes, plus a decent normal-ish data plan?

the 4 is only £70 less and is only 8GB

Still sticking with mine, got it the first day it was out. The next version is probably the one I'll replace it with.

So, on a day of high expectation built up over about six months, and with huge annual precedents in the ipod range:

- same phone but slightly faster
- same ipods

Anyone willing to bet Apple's working on another new-category device? Or an Apple TV replacement to do for TV what itunes did for music, maybe?

Still have a 3G and was also hoping for an updated form factor (don't like the feel of the 4). My inner conspiracy theorist thinks they've purposefully made certain key apps (well, key for me) like Facebook and the Maps app run so slowly on the 3G (under iOS 4.2.1) that they're almost unusable. I'll likely go 4S but won't be happy about it. On the bright side iPhone 4 cases are dirt cheap and will work with the new one (I think). Wish there was a way to port iOS 5 to the Samsung Galaxy II S…

feel like apple has been whiffing with updates since the iPad, everything since then have been minor updates. the ipad 2 felt like it came way too soon on the heels of the ipad.

although you're right, they probably weren't losing sales based on the limitations of the original ipad, given the lol competition

well I'm just thinking of the 'golden era' - unibody macbooks, ipod nanos, macbook air, iphone 3G, iphone 4 with retina screen, ipad... it always seemed at least one product line was receiving a 'revolutionary' update per year (probably gonna be disproved if I ever look back at the timeline)

he's a weird sounding dude: half southern gentleman, half robot. not sure that he isn't powered by siri.

but i think the slow speech is a very conscious attempt to control his nerves. presume that's the reason why they used a much smaller venue too.

i think that has pretty much always been the default venue for non-WWDC/MacWorld announcements. a couple non-conference ones were done up in SF, but they are the exception. i think.
