on the one hand that sucks

on the other hand, lol welcome to launch day, this happens every time and is why even if I was upgrading now I wouldn't have bought the phone today

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Friday, 14 October 2011 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

i have decided not to upgrade to iOS5 because i'm concerned that my oystercard will stop tweeting my flickr account

I have an iPhone 4S and it is awesome fast.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 14 October 2011 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

It really is damn fast.

Nerd-fun Siri things: "Beam me up", "tell me a joke", "open the pod bay doors" (keep doing this one until s/he gives in), "sing a song"

stet, Friday, 14 October 2011 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

My iHone sorted itself out after I synced with music syncing turned off, and then re-synced with it on. You know, it just works ;)

idg why I have to keep my iphone and ipad apps on my mac, and I can't find anything anywhere that says why I shouldn't delete them. Weird considering that's the second question I had about icloud. Running some tests now, seems to be okay.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 14 October 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

work just bought me a 13" MBA. stoked for the tiny fonts/tiny hard drive.

caek, Thursday, 20 October 2011 09:28 (twelve years ago) link

In case anybody cares, I can't get Superduper to back up over a network using AFP to save my life. However, if I use NFS it happens without a hitch. Which seems bizarre to me, but there you go.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 20 October 2011 10:40 (twelve years ago) link

I know I shouldn't be but I'm amazed by the number of Newsstand apps that are just facsimiles of print magazines. Some are great though. All the Condé Nast titles I've looked at are superb, especially the New Yorker which gets the hell out of your way and just lets you read. Project is also pretty decent. The Guardian is a bit too appy and difficult to penetrate but the idea is nice.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 22:30 (twelve years ago) link

Crap, maybe this should have been in the app thread, oh well.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 22:30 (twelve years ago) link

all these magazine apps need to be way lighter and should dl in the background (which new yorker doesnt do yet)

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 22:34 (twelve years ago) link

The Guardian app is awesome once you figure out how to use Favorites and tags. Pretty much every story is tagged with like five different keywords. You can "favorite" any of those keywords, favorite a search, favorite a columnist..

Another great thing is how persistent all the stories are. Except for liveblogs, everything works offline and stays available.

Don't think any apps download in the background? Wish they did. I'd love to set a timer for the Guardian app to say "at 8pm download everything".

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 22:37 (twelve years ago) link

Guardian downloads in the background for me. I can't attest to the New Yorker because I'm not a subscriber.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 22:38 (twelve years ago) link

...I did subscribe to GQ China (GQ中国 in the app store) (FREE ffs) but they've not done a new one since I signed up.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 22:39 (twelve years ago) link

...that's relevant because it's also a Condé Nast and uses the same platform

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

guardian dls in the bg, like AA said, and they're all supposed to with newsstnd

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 22:51 (twelve years ago) link

is there any compelling reason for me NOT to get a refurbished iMac v. a new one? like, i know the graphics card and processor are better, and its got thunderbolt, but....anything else?

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

Most annoying thing is that the notification mechanism defaults to banners AND badges AND sounds AND lock screen messages, so if you only want a badge you have to go into settings and manually cut it down, EVERY time. On top of that there are some apps (Future Publishing I'm looking at you) that fail to clear the unread badge and ribbon even after you've read the whole issue.

xp none that I can think of. All recent Mac hardware has been pretty good and will run Lion so

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 23:15 (twelve years ago) link

i would be wary of buying a thunderboltless mac for futureproofing reasons tbh

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 23:16 (twelve years ago) link

that was kinda the main thing :-/

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 23:17 (twelve years ago) link

If you want thunderbolt you don't have a choice. Also it sounds like this won't be a danger to you but the Airs have cut-down thunderbolt ports that don't do as much.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 23:18 (twelve years ago) link

you save like $100, I would wait until refurbished models of the current model show up in the refurb store

dayo, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 23:22 (twelve years ago) link

could be waiting a while though

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 23:25 (twelve years ago) link

i would wait until you get rich

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 23:27 (twelve years ago) link

I thought I'd just drop in to say that the iPhone 4s is pretty badass.

http://www.cultofmac.com/126283/if-you-have-an-iphone-in-prison-it-has-probably-been-in-someones-butt/

Drops can work in a number of ways. For example, there’s a bathroom just outside one of the main San Quentin gates which is open to the public and is a big draw for tourists. Inmate work crews clean these bathrooms every day. An inmate’s associate on the outside will have taped a package (of phones, drugs, tobacco, etc.) to the back of the women’s toilet, for example. When the inmates come to clean, they toss it in with the rest of the trash, then sort through it later. Then, when when nobody’s looking, whoop, up the butt it goes. They are usually prepackaged in latex gloves or condoms for easier insertion.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 22:26 (twelve years ago) link

whoop

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/27/whats-really-next-for-apple-in-television/

lol @ nyt basically giving away the big innovation in the apple tv. with jobs gone I'm guessing media outlets are going to be much less afraid about leaking shit

dayo, Thursday, 27 October 2011 17:10 (twelve years ago) link

it'd be good if siri actually worked first

cozen, Thursday, 27 October 2011 17:18 (twelve years ago) link

could you put siri into a feedback loop where it hears the content being played on the TV and then selects new content based on that and then it hears the TV again ad infinitum

not so smart now are you siri

dayo, Thursday, 27 October 2011 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

haha isn't that a gag from 30rock

btw guys, I don't think Jobs cracking the television issue was Siri+Apple TV

avant-garde heterosexuals (mh), Thursday, 27 October 2011 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

love the dramatic scene of jobs on his deathbed going "i finally... cracked it"

SHOWMAN TO THE END.

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Thursday, 27 October 2011 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

do you think he recorded video at the end so he could deliver keynotes from beyond the grave

how spectacular would that be

lukas, Thursday, 27 October 2011 17:42 (twelve years ago) link

― avant-garde heterosexuals (mh), Thursday, October 27, 2011 1:27 PM (22 minutes ago) Bookmark

probably not but it definitely solves the issue of control imo. tv remotes are junk, using a keyboard to control your TV or media center is junk, using a mouse with a TV is junk. who the hell wants to do that when they are chillin on the big sofa

dayo, Thursday, 27 October 2011 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

the big tv stumbling block is that ITV won't let them call it an iTV

caek, Thursday, 27 October 2011 17:52 (twelve years ago) link

Apple could just buy ITV with their cash reserves to get the trademark.

whoop, up the butt it goes (silby), Thursday, 27 October 2011 17:54 (twelve years ago) link

true but steve jobs hated downton abbey
