i don't like ales or dark beers very much. my favorites are Red Stripe, Anchor Steam, and this beer at a local resturant/micro-brewery called 21st Ammendment, 'South Park Blonde' which is really good with a burger and fries.

Allagash White is in the style of a Belgian witbier not a German hefeweizen.

Good, interesting Belgians are anything by De Dolle and Phantom. Also Panil Barrique, which is an Italian but in the style of a Flemish sour brown ale.

On my way home from work today I decided to treat myself and pick up a Zwyviec, Poland's favourite lager. Takes me back to happy times in that fine country. It's 5.6% and tastes mighty fine.
Has anyone tried Carpathia? It's another Polish one I think. They're selling it in Stereo in Glasgow. Damned tasty.

Stew (stew s), Saturday, 6 August 2005 16:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Zwyviec I think, has a cool little global hypercolour style label on the back that displays the logo if the beer is cold enough, thye have it in our local offie, it's good.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 6 August 2005 16:16 (eighteen years ago) link

So it does. But now my Zwyviec is all drunk up there's nothing to see :(

Jeff has helped hone my appreciation for Delirium Tremens. It's got a stupid amount of alcohol, a syrupy body, and a sweet taste with just a hint of... how should I put this?... funk. Like a delicious sweatsock. It tastes very much like it makes you feel.

I am about to drink LE COQ beer!

(it's the only pic I can find online)

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:23 (eighteen years ago) link

ohh...the punning opportunities.

I like poncey beers. Leffe (particularly) and Hoegaaaaaarden and things that taste similar but I've forgotten what they're called. Erdinger is also nice.

Also, I tried a very nice cherry beer last time I came to London. It was my first time. It smelt rather odd, but I put it in my mouth anyway. Nice, once you're used to it.

Lindemann's Kriek (cherry) Lambic is so fucking good with any dessert that involves chocolate.

Anchor Steam. Because it is brewed in SF.

anchor steam is good!

I didn't care for Anchor Steam the first time I tasted it, but now I love it. The Anchor brewery tour is great for any beer lover in SF who hasn't gone on it. (Not just for the free samples.)

There's also Pyramid on Gilman in Berkeley though I believe they are based in Seattle too? Delicious!

it makes me sad that i will be out drinking beer tonite, in a number of locales, yet all that beer will be mediocre at best. oh, for some badger golden glory, some cottonwood ipa, some anchor steam, a charles wells beer perhaps. a sierra nevada!

but no, it will be the usual selection:(

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Whenever I run out of Sierra Nevada here, before I can get back to Memphis/West Memphis for more, I make do with Abita Amber.

The best part of living in NoCal (north of Sac) was being near the Sierra Nevada brewery.

i tried two new (to me) badgers, earlier this week. first gold, and summer gold. neither of them really appealed, perhaps you think differently.

i normally steer clear of marstons, but i tried an old empire, perhaps because of the design, and i was quite impressed.

has anyone tried three floyds alpha king?

http://www.threefloyds.com/dspAlphaKing.html

it seems to have won many awards

aw man! how comes archel was drinking dark star hophead a year ago? i only discovered it about two months ago. ANYHOO, it WILL WIN best beer at the GBBF this year, it is aces, kind of a lovely mid-point between DEUCHARS IPA and LANDLORD!!!

I must now mention Franziskaner weissbier.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 29 June 2006 13:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Steve I think it's because Dark Star is (apropriately enough) from within the accursed urbs of the miserydungeon they call Brighton.

Monteith's Golden Ale. I could drink that all day. (and when I was in NZ, I did)

milo z (mlp), Friday, 30 June 2006 02:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I seem to do most of my drinking at home these days & buy most of my beer at the supermarket (living the suburban dream): the current favourite is Brakespear's Organic Ale. This is i) superlatively delicious: properly bitter in a way bottled beer so often isn't & unpasteurised so it has that 'from the pub' taste, ii) not too strong (four point something, rather than five point something like most bottled beer), so you can drink plenty of it, & iii) ridiculously cheap - 3 bottles for £4 at Asda.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 30 June 2006 08:44 (eighteen years ago) link

It's good, but I'm not sure it counts as beer.

Custard Subsidence (kate), Friday, 30 June 2006 08:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I think it's because Dark Star is (apropriately enough) from within the accursed urbs of the miserydungeon they call Brighton.

Haha, I can still remember the first time I had my first pint of hophead shortly after moving down here a few years ago, I think it finally convinced me just how much better real ale is than bland megacorp bears. And it was £1.70 a pint then - those were the days!

It's good, but I'm not sure it counts as beer.

Of course it counts as beer - lambic beers I believe actually existed before "convential" beer.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 30 June 2006 10:24 (eighteen years ago) link

er, a rather unconventional way of spelling "conventional".

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 30 June 2006 10:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, if anyone has an Oddbins in their area, they do three rather nice beers from a brwerey called Williams from Alloa: 'Gold', 'Red' and 'Black'. The names are self-desriptive. And the best bit? The 500ml bottles only cost £1.29, making them the cheapest beer they sell in there.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 30 June 2006 10:29 (eighteen years ago) link

"has anyone tried three floyds alpha king?"

it's good. it might even be my favorite of theirs. i like hoppy stuff a lot.
